Brandon Jennings getting that protein at 187lbs
Supposedly jennings is trying to gain weight, he went from 170lbs to 187lb with the goal of 195lb. i saw it on instagram, and he definitely looks a lot thicker. Can anyone confirm this?
Also if confirmed
Do you think he'll become a capable defender?
Do you think his offensive game which depends a lot on his quickness will suffer?
Yes i think he becomes a better man defender, however i still think he lacks the mindset to be a great defender
Yes i think he'll need to adjust to his new body, but i think he'll find gettin to the rim and finishing there will become a lot easier

Jennings has been gaining weight since the season ended, I told you guys not to give up on my young dude Jennings. Gaining muscles helps you athletically if you train correctly. I think he'll become a better defender if he's working on his lower body and lateral movements. I also think he'll be a better offensive players(driving to the paint) because he'll be able to bump opponents and gain more space.
@Blkbrd: Your response makes me think you play ball. If I'm right, I can definitely respect that.

To be a good defender you gotta WANNA defend. If he was 210 his lack of defensive effort/fundamentals would make that null and void.

Re: Brandon Jennings getting that protein at 187lbs
Unless he never lifted a day in his life before that protein mention should probably be written as "protein" to add 17lbs of muscle so far this off-season...
Also he's probably bulking up not for n-court reasons but because he's tired of being punked playing on the street and bitchslapped in clubs.

I don't think Jennings has the brain or heart to be a good defender, but I'd love to be wrong.

Whether he can become a good individual defender or not is yet to be seen, but he's show he can be a part of a good team defense in Milwaukee, and that was skinny/young/inexperienced Jennings. So if he puts on weight, has more experience and is coached up, I don't see why we couldn't at least have a good team defense with him. He won't be shutting guys down but as long as he can contribute to a team concept that's all I care about.
A lot will depend on Drummond and Monroe's ability to protect the paint (if Monroe is to be resigned and start). Because Jennings can actually be a defensive asset on the perimeter with his speed and knack for getting steals in the passing lanes. The only way that works though is if he has bigs that can protect the paint behind him during the times he gambles and misses. He also doesn't necessarily have to be able to keep his man in front of him every possession, as long as when he does get beat, he funnels them into our bigs in the paint - and they do their job (which didn't happen this year)
Which is why I don't have any faith in a frontcourt that relies on Monroe to protect the paint. You need shotblockers back there to play that way. Dre is a great shotblocker but he might be too young to take on that whole task himself. That's why having another great athletic shot-blocker in Smith back there with him makes the most sense if we're starting Jennings at PG.
The reason our defense was so bad last year was because Jennings couldn't keep anyone in front of him, and our bigs couldn't protect the paint behind him. It was a total failure from both sides.
I think Stan can turn Drummond/Smith into that dominant defensive duo inside that we envisioned when we got Smith, allowing Jennings some leeway on D. As for Stan doing the same with Drummond/Monroe, I don't see it. He might be able to put them in a solid scheme, but if Jennings is at PG letting everyone dribble past him still, it won't be a very effective defense.
The only way I can see being a great defense with Monroe is if you have lockdown defenders around the perimeter at all 3 positions and Dre dominating inside. Then you just concede what Monroe is going to give up and try to make up for it by being extra stingy at the other four positions.
Something has to give though. Its going to be hard to be a good defense if Jennings is allowing penetration at will and Monroe is unable to protect the paint behind him. At least one of those problems needs to be solved. Maybe Jennings bulking up solves one of them.

He's going to have to defend, or SVG is going to play Bynum or Siva over him.
Will gaining weight make him an adequate defender? Awwww hell naw!

Lol more like getting that gear if he's put on 17lbs in a month.
Good news though, he definitely needs to get bigger and stronger. Where is this Instagram photo you're talking about? It's annoying that he changes accounts every 2 months lol

Oh naw, no debate. Just answering your question of if he would become a better defender.

Re: Brandon Jennings getting that protein at 187lbs
He needs to get stronger because that'll give him more confidence to attack the rim and eat some contact, but more than anything he needs an attitude adjustment.
he needs to buy into what ever system SVG puts in place and he needs to do the little things and not worry about being flashy.
Last year the only thing he did defensively was reach for steals and that isn't going to cut it. Even if he doesn't get much stronger (he'll lose weight as the season goes on), he has the quickness to stay with anyone in the league and he should play to that strength.
i still have hope for him.

Guys like Darren Collison, Aaron Brooks and Barea attack the rim all the time and they're smaller than him. It's not a weight thing, dude just don't have heart.

While I agree with the facts you're saying, I don't agree with the conclusion. I'd rather have Monroe/Drummond and a point guard that doesn't allow constant penetration then Smith/Drummond and Jennings.
In other words, while I'm not a fan of either Smith or Monroe, I'd rather dump Jennings and Smith than S&T Monroe. I realize that's a more difficult task, by the way. Get to it, SVG.

Not only would you have to dump Smith and Jennings though, but also have to replace them with great perimeter defenders too. Which is not easy like you say. And even then, you still have a problem inside with Monroe.
I guess my thinking is it would be easier to win now by having Stan turn Drummond/Smith into a dominant paint protecting duo, and then just deal with Jennings' defense for a couple more seasons until we can get someone better. By then Smith's contract will be in its last year and Jennings will be expired. Then we can upgrade those position at that time, and be able to win now and win later.
