Elfrid Payton

Post#1 » by bleedblue3303 » Mon May 19, 2014 9:39 pm

What's this guys story? Great size, Athletic, good court vision, pride in defense. Supposedly can't shoot. But neither could Rondo when he first came into the league. Espn had him ranked as the 5th best pg in the draft. Was curious to hear what you all think about him.

He has a very high ceiling. Very young for his class, he's actually younger than a lot of the freshman prospects. A physical beast, high defensive potential, can use his strength to get to the rim at will. Has good form on his jumper, but needs to be more consistent. He also needs to improve as a floor general. I don't see why he shouldn't be the 2nd PG off of the board behind Exum.

Marcus Smart was a better prospect as a freshman and today. Smart could easily still end up being the best PG out of this class of many young PGs that could be something special. However i see where you're coming from, in a prospect point of view it should be;
1a Exum
1b Smart
3 Payton
4 LaVine
5 Ennis

Payton is awesome athletically, recognizes his weaknesses & is younger than his experience would say.

I like Payton a lot, think he's a kid that could come in and give you quality minutes running the 2nd unit right now. Eventually be a very good starter and once his jumper and free throw shooting comes around (speculating that it ever does) he's gonna be very difficult to deal with because of his quickness and handle.
Plus he digs in defensively and that alone will get him quality minutes on the court for whatever team he lands on good or bad.

Great length and quicks. Really good handle and nice court vision. Excellent on the ball defender. Only thing is he can't shoot at all. But if he gets a jumper he has a very high ceiling.

Seems like a good high risk high reward prospect in the late first or second round.

Clearly behind smart exum and ennis

There isn't a facet of the game Ennis is better at than Payton other than jump-shooting.

isn't as turnover prone so you can make a case for decision making.

His shot has improved, it might just be in drills but if it translates over to his game he will be a better PG prospect than Ennis but below Smart and Exum.
Ska needs to make a comeback.

Love him. Yes he has bust potential, but in the right situation he could be a beast.

Chad Ford said he had the most impressive workout he's seen thus far.

He's not as good a penetrator or passer as Rod Strickland was (which is no knock because Strickland was a great penetrator), but he's got a similar offensive style. And on the positive side, he's a far better defender than Strickland ever was. Hopefully, he ends up a better guy to have on a team - as Strickland had altercations with teammates (including beating up Tracey Murray so bad he had to miss time), multiple DUI's, a refusal to play which caused his backup to play 48 minutes when the backup (Chris Whitney) already had bad ankles, and a special incident when he threw up a hotdog during a game. But I digress.

i don't think he has much bust potential. even if he doesn't develop a shot he still has his defense, energy and transition play he can fall back on. that still sounds like a rotation player.

definitely take him before ennis. He is the 3rd best pg in this draft. Ennis is the next eric maynor.
