Steve Hetzel hired as new assistant coach

Post#1 » by Liver_Pooty » Thu May 29, 2014 7:09 pm

Has a very strong background in player development from what I have read thus far.

Hetzel spent the past four seasons as a player development coach with the Detroit Pistons, first for former Cavaliers assistant John Kuester, then Lawrence Frank.

He spent 2006-09 as the video coordinator for the Cavaliers and head coach Mike Brown

Hetzel, who didn’t play basketball past high school and was a better prep football player anyway in suburban Detroit, has worked under several head coaches who have “toughness” listed as prime attributes. Highlighting that list are Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich

My job description, or what I like to tell people, at least, is that I’m trying to improve every player I work with. It doesn’t always work out that way, but some guys really buy in to what you’re teaching. Really, my job as player development coach – what it is around the league and what it is here with the Pistons – is to develop the player’s skill level and improve their skill set and get them acquainted with the offense we run and have them comfortable scoring in different spots that the offense creates for them.

Cavs fans apparently didn't want him to go anywhere.

Are we losing any assistants or is he just in addition to who we have already?

Im assuming this means that Bob Beyer is going to leave to join SVG's staff in Detroit

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I knew that had been rumored but I'd never seen it confirmed anywhere.

If he has worked under Izzo and Popovich, he cannot be bad. So I think it sounds like a solid addition to the staff from what I have heard so far.

Hetzel sounds like he has a pretty good reputation around the league for being a good coach. Glad we got him.

Hetzel spent this past year as the head coach for the Cavs' D-League team.

Seems like a guy who'll help the young players a lot. I like it.

Must be nice to have a good job as a beat writer and do nothing but confirm other peoples reports. Whens the last time Bonnell "broke" something for us anyway?

Charlotte need as many developmental coaches on the staff as possible to bring out the untapped potential of Biyombo, MKG, and Zeller before it's too late. I think this is a good hire

Only the minor 10-day signings of guys like Justin Hamilton, probably.
