It seems like you need to "under utilize" the old guys in order to keep them fresh. The other guy I would like to see us sign is Kenyon Martin - I know that is a long shot. I think he and Gooden could stay healthy and contribute if you played them every other game.

Edit: I think Nene is in that camp now as well.

Question I have about Gooden is whether he played well enough to attract attention
from some other team. Yes, I understand MIL is still paying him. That doesn't preclude
someone else paying him more than the vet min and or a situation where he might play
more (which he might find attractive as well).

Or is there something about the amnesty clause that I don't understand?

trying to remember now...Gooden gets the full amount that MIL signed him to.
We pay vet min, MIL pays the rest? OK, maybe I didn't get it. Gooden would end
up getting the same amount no matter what unless someone signed him for more
than MIL was paying him?

I guess the bottom line is are we assured of keeping Gooden for the vet min?
He is a UFA right?

I think that's correct, Jim. My understanding is that, short of anyone offering Gooden MORE than he's getting from MIL, Gooden is going to get the same amount of money in his pocket regardless of what he signs for or who signs him.

If that's the case, short of going ring chasing in Miami or something, why wouldn't he sign with the Wiz for the minimum this year. The team who let him work out at their practice facility when he had no job. Who signed him and got him to the playoffs. The team located close to his girlfriend in North Bethesda.

I think the only risk is if someone offers him a multiple-year contract. If that's the case, and we are only offering a one-year deal, I would leave if I were Drew.

Yes, Pine is correct. Gooden is going to make $7.1M next year no matter what he does.

If he sits on the couch, he'll get $7.1M from Milwaukee. If he plays for us, we will pay him a vet minimum contract and he'll get $0.9M from us and $6.2M from Milwaukee.

The only concern I have is that some other team might offer him a 2-year deal at, say, $3M a year, giving Gooden an incentive to leave so he guarantees himself and extra $3M in 2015/16. It seems like an unlikely prospect, however. That foolish team that offers the deal will end up unnecessarily paying Gooden $2M out of their pocket in 2014/15 rather than letting Milwaukee pick up the tab. In essence, they will be paying Gooden $5M out of pocket (over 2 years)

Yeah, I think teams probably would go after Boozer (when amnestied), Scola (if bought out), etc, then Gooden as the vet bigs on the cheap this off-season. I think Gooden likes it here, and I don't see teams giving him a 2 year deal off such a small sample size.
