He has to get off the bench for more than 30 seconds a game to succeed.

I think he's going to have more opportunities with SVG.

I agree with this, and I think SVG is the type of coach who can develop Datome to his full potential. I think he is an excellent shooter by nature, that may have been knocked off balance by the poor coaching last year, lack of minutes, and lack of a chance to get used to bigger and faster defenders. I think we have a diamond in the rough with Datome though.

Lebron
Kobe
Gasol
Melo

Re: My man Gigi Datome confident he can succeed in NBA
It wouldn't surprise me at all if Datome flourished in Van Gundy's system. I recently watched some of the videos of games he had last year (these videos showed all of his misses too, and there were a lot) and I was actually pretty surprised by how good his handles and passing are. If he can regain his 3 point shot next year, I think he'll be a great backup 3. He's one of the players I'm most excited to see next year.

If he's anything more than the 8th guy in your rotation, your team probably isn't very good.

Have you ever seen him play in Italy or in the Eurobasket? He must have been our SF this year since the "Big-Three" doesn't work.

No, but I really don't care about anything he has done in minor league basketball.
If he was destined to be good, I find it hard to believe that he was never on the NBA draft radar and really didn't garner much NBA interest until he was in his mid 20's. These days quality overseas prospects are identified when they are in their teenage years.
He's fine for what he is, cheap roster filler with mild upside with his shooting. But he likely washes out of the NBA after his contract expires.

If he can get his 3 point shot going again, he won't wash out. And no one's expecting him to be a starter in this league (or at the very least I'm not). There's such a need for consistent 3 point shooting in the league that if he can get his jumper going again (which he was known for in Europe) then he'll be in the league as a backup for a while.

Re: My man Gigi Datome confident he can succeed in NBA
Exactly this,he could carve himself out a nice niche in the NBA as that 3pt specialist, like a reddick, korver,(what charlie v used to be) type player. This really is a make or break year for datome and I really hope he bounces back, and with svg who likes his 3pt shooters,I could really see him thriveing.Natopher wrote:thesack12 wrote:paQo the BAWSER wrote:Have you ever seen him play in Italy or in the Eurobasket? A lot of ifs and maybes in there. I remember when scores of people accused Austin Daye of being a quality shooter also.
Fact is, he hasn't done anything to show he has any staying power at all. True, he wasn't afforded a lot of time to get on the floor and the team situation was a mess. But there is something to be said about earning minutes. Its very possible, he simply didn't earn any additional opportunities. This coming season is his one shot, of proving he can stick. There is a quality coaching environment now in place, now its up to him.

There's not a lot of ifs and maybes in there. There's only one. And it's his 3 point shot, which he was known for in Europe. If he was never known as a 3 point shooter, then I'd agree with you that he'll likely wash out. But his biggest weakness last season was what he's been known for his whole career. The odds of him not regaining his 3 point shot are slim.
Also, Austin Daye IS a quality 3 point shooter. It's the other aspects of his game (and especially his confidence) that makes him unable to keep a rotation spot on a team. Datome has already shown a better all-around game than Daye (with the exception of his 3 point shooting). He hustles, he rebounds well, he's got some nice handles and passing. Add a 3 point shot to that and you've got a very solid backup.

If he can show he deserves minutes
If he shows he can athletically hang with the 3's in the NBA
If he shows he can defend his position, both man up and via team defense
If he can learn how to move off the ball on offense
If he can rebound the ball
If he can prove his shot is reliable
Then he may be able to stick in the NBA.
So yeah since he has shown ZERO, there are a lot of ifs and maybe surrounding him.
As for Daye, I certainly hope Datome is better than that guy because Austin Daye is terrible at everything related to basketball. But I'm glad to see that the myth that Daye is a good shooter lives on.

What other SFs do we have apart from him and Singler?

LOL, are we really cherry picking individual games? Other than saying that, I'm not going to comment further on that matter.
Also, considering the offseason has yet to begin meaning all of the draft/free agency/and trade season are still yet to transpire, I think its a little early to evaluate the roster in terms of what minutes/opportunities are available at what positions.

God forbid I show you a video clip where he shoots 6/10 from 3, my fault. I guess that you're right, a career 35% 3 point shooter can't shoot. My bad.
Also, if we sign a SF (which could happen) then obviously Datome won't be our backup because he's not going to beat out Singler. But we don't need to go out and get a starting SF because Singler is more than capable in that role, and if that's the case (and Datome gets his 3 point shot working) then he should be a final backup SF.

Re: My man Gigi Datome confident he can succeed in NBA
I've seen both players in Europe and I'm going to say Datome is a way better than Singler. Better defender, better all-around player, better creating his own shot, better post moves, better handles, better mid-range and I think there's a draw between their 3pt shots.
