What are the Pistons worth?
With the $2 Billion sale of Clippers your owner must be investigating how much the Pistons are worth. He is basically a investment company and has no ties to the community.
You must look at 2 scenarios in the Pistons remain in the Detroit area or are moved.
If the team was moved could see $1 Billion if remains in Detroit $750 million.
Think Memphis and Detroit the 2 prime franchises that could be sold in the next year.

this just isn't true.
Gores is from Flint and has spent a lot of money in different communities around michigan.
He has always stated that the pistons are a community asset.

Re: What are the Pistons worth?
Probably $600-700 million. I think Detroit is one of the least desirable markets in the NBA but we just saw the Bucks sell for $550 million, plus the cost needed to build a new arena.

Re: What are the Pistons worth?
Well Gores just bought the team for like 350 million which is sad considering the fricking Bucks just sold for 550 million. Gores might sell when the team is back playing well but when that happens were usually at the very top in attendance. Pistons did lead the league in attendance for the majority of the 2000s.

Re: What are the Pistons worth?
No chance the team is worth a billion. The team also wouldn't be worth more if they were to move, because they'd still have to purchase The Palace, on top of building a new arena. So I'd imagine that would negate the increased value to move the franchise. I'd guess somewhere around $400-$500 million right now.
It'll be interesting to see what Gores does if they return to the playoffs on a regular basis though. Gores seems to be very business minded, and concerned with his margins and profit making. If the team turns it around, and increases significantly in value, I wonder if he would be tempted to turn that profit, or if he is in it for the long haul.

Gores & SVG stated the Pistons are a community asset
Gores is from Michigan
Gores has spent millions in the area
Umm, why would he move the team out of Detroit? A move downtown makes some sense. A move out of state doesn't!
The idea that Gores is waiting to sell the Pistons is IMO based on nothing concrete. It's opinion and guess work. Maybe I missed an article where Gores mentioned selling?

I don't think the idea is completely ridiculous. Acquiring distressed assets and either rehabilitating or disseminating them is Gores' entire business model; and make no mistake, the Pistons' worth has definitely increased since he bought them for a bargain from Karen Davidson. A new, much more owner friendly CBA has been implemented and team values have been inflated by above market value sales of the Warriors, Kings, Bucks, and Clippers. Gores could easily make a handsome profit already. I don't necessarily think that is his goal here in the short term, but I can certainly understand an outsider reaching that conclusion.

Im guessing you have no clue what you are talking about.
Just like in Toronto where the same company owns the Maple leafs and Raptors Palace entertainment owns the Pistons, the Palace, Pine Knob and several other assets. The Stadium is privately owned on private property. There is no way a buyer would purchase the Palace and its 125 mil renovations mortgage just to abandon the building and leave. 25-50% of the purchase price is the stadium and concert arena.
Gores is a Flintstone, Michigan State grad. He is as Michigan as Gretzky is Canadian. In fact I would venture to say Gores spends more time Michigan than Gretzky does in Canada.

MLSE owns Raptors, Leafs plus the soccer team and one of the partners own the Jays. In the 1 year since they purchased 80% of MSLE they have likely doubled the value of the purchase price. Even though the Leafs are a terrible team they are the most valuable in the NHL and the Raptors have a value of about $750 million plus the arena and surrounding real estate in the center of the city. They total MSLE is worth close to 3 billion.

Precisely.
Unless you think 20-25 teams are in one of the "least desirable markets". Then at that point that classification doesn't mean much.

Detroit's economy is screwed, the population is plummeting etc.
There is not a city in the rest of the world that is experiencing the kind of decline that Detroit is right now.

Re: What are the Pistons worth?
But the Pistons don't play in Detroit lol
As an Aussie I couldn't tell you about the decline of Detroit/Michigan.
As a Pistons fan though it makes zero sense for Gores to sell the team now or move it downtown or out of state!
Yes, he made squillions buying and selling businesses...but until someone can produce actual proof that he intends to do the same in this situation its all just speculation.

So you think the "Detroit market" is tied only to the population inside the city limits of Detroit? If I decide to move to Southfield, did I just weaken the market? Because I would still be a fan, willing and able to go to the games. And please by all means list all the markets better than Detroit. Or to make it easier, show me the apparent only 3 or 4 teams Detroit's market is better than.

Lets play a game, its called fun with numbers.
Average attendance rank for the last 10 years:
2014 - 26th
2013 - 28th
2012 - 28th
2011 - 18th
2010 - 8th
2009 - 1st
2008 - 1st
2007 - 2nd
2006 - 1st
2005 - 1st
2004 - 1st
Point being, if you don't put garbage on the court, we will come out in droves. People coming out in droves = money. Say what you want about a market, but find me an owner who doesn't want that kind of foot traffic at his venue, night in and night out.
The last few years have been really really rough, but don't kid yourself, the D is still a very very profitable market, Detroit's economic woe's included.
I don't know what makes a market desirable to you, but tons of paying fans seem like something that would qualify. This least desirable market thing is a joke.
