Seems very weird to send him down after so few shots, especially 'cause things looked better in starts 4-5 before a disaster. I'll assume he showed something that needed correction and the coaches decided Dunedin was the best place to get that done. I guess it could just be backtracking on which A+ starter should've got the promotion, but I find that less likely, especially after such a short period.

Daniel Norris got BABIP'd, giving up nine hits (seven singles) over six innings, with a 6:0 K:BB. His ERA, regrettably, shot up above 1.00 as he gave up more than one earned run for the first time all season.

In less world-altering news, Pompey hit another home run.

Drabek got tagged for 3 HR's tonight. Unfortunate because he was doing a decent job of throwing strikes tonight.

Six homers in just over 220 plate appearances in the FSL is nothing to sneeze at.

Combine that with a walk rate around 11%, a strikeout rate around 17% and a wRC+ of 164 entering the game.

His BABIP is still high, but even normalized somewhat, that's still pretty tasty for a 21 year old.

Me thinks it's time to give him a bump.

He also stole his 21st base in 23 tries. At a more sustainable percentage that still works out to 40-50 stolen bases a year.

It's going to be really interesting to see how he handles the jump to New Hampshire, which should be happening any day now.

Speaking of promotions, Derrick Chung went 3 for 4 tonight. At age 26 and sporting an .338/.413/.456/.866 slash line, you really have to wonder what he's still doing in Dunedin.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

I don't think of Chung as a player prospect. To me he's a Crash Davis, future coach guy. He'll stay wherever they think he's useful. I'm guessing for now Norris is his Nuke. :D

It think that's a little rigid. Guys like EE and JB were scrubs in their late 20s before they got 'it'. Chung probably doesn't have a major league future, but a guy who is that good of a defensive catcher, hard to run on, and who the team invested time in the Arizona Fall League last fall, can't be dismissed as Crash Davis. Maybe they will move him up with Norris, but it's not like this organization is knee deep in real prospect catchers. Every so often, one can hope for a late bloomer. You might at least think the Jays will want to test his offensive prowess at a higher level.

I'm with you on this one. I think his position dictates that he will hang around and eventually get some MLB games at some point., whether its with the Jays or someone else.

Catchers with solid defence and game calling are worth hanging onto even if they surface in your lineup as a backup/platoon player. Catching just seems to be that position where talent still hasn't emerged in any sort of wealth.
That's what she said.

He's a 26 year-old repeating at A ball. A guy projecting to be a 28-29 year-old rookie is hardly a real prospect even in the world of no catchers. That doesn't mean he won't get a couple cups of coffee in the bigs for somebody at some point, nor does it mean he couldn't end up Yan Gomes' me and playing for real, but that's about as likely as it was for Brian Jerolman.

IMO the Jays are grooming him as a pitching mentor far more than as a guy they ever expect to suit up in a Jays uniform for anything other than an injury call-up. He got to play AFL either for the pitchers being sent or as a reward for generally being an awesome guy to have in the minors.

9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Rafael Furcal!

If I were the manager I would have pulled my team off the field. Pretty much every position made an error, passed ball, gave up a meatball or something. Ouch!

Mellen's been studying Sanchez quite a bit early this season (3 reports). In his notes from the field article this week he covered Sanchez. It's a subscription article, however, I'll summarize some of his comments below (mods let me know if this isn't allowed)

- Arm is a work in progress.
- Repertoire can dominate lineups even as he advances
- Inconsistent fastball command leaves doubts as to whether full potential will be realized.
- Delivery has limitations when it comes to ability to consistently throw downhill.

Thanks, I missed that earlier in the week but read it now.

Yeah, Mellen has been a good follow for the outings he has seen Sanchez.

I know it's easy to get frustrated by the inability to command it, but he's only turning 22. This isn't a case yet of being teased by someone already in his prime, like Morrow.

Sanchez still has time to figure it out and if he does, he is going to be stupid nasty with how good his curve can be and the progress he has made with his change.

Easy to forget how young these HS guys still are.

We should convert Drabek into a reliever and see if he can come up here in a month to help us down the stretch.

He could probably get his fastball up around 96 for one inning at a time.

That's definitely true, but I also try to remember that these guys rarely just flip a switch and it all works. More than likely Sanchez's stuff gets him to the bigs pretty quickly and he'll be a guy with an electric arm and control issues just like he is now. A comp for struggle, not as similar pitchers necessarily, that comes to mind is a guy like Homer Bailey. Or more recent guys still kind of going through it like Garrett Richards or Chris Tillman.

Just saying those guys debuts and first couple years are the far more likely to be similar to the beginning for a guy with Sanchez's history than someone who just nails it, comes in and slots into the top 2 spots in a rotation from day one.

Basically don't get too down when they look bad and don't get too carried away when they look great.

Gabryszwski with a great game tonight at Lansing.

6 IP/5 H/1 ER/1 BB/9 K career high. In his last 2 appearances 12 IP/1 ER/2 BB/15 K. In his previous 57 innings this season he had 30 K's.

With respect to his velocity:
Jesse G-S ‏@jgoldstrass 15m
@RJBrasilcdn Hmm. 82-85 early in the year, 87-90 most recently. I have a feeling that if he works hard, he can keep raising it.

Taylor Cole in Dunedin pitched 6 runs and gave up 3 unearned runs. Had 6 K's and didn't give up a single walk. Took 84 pitches to get through 6.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
