I don't think you would have to include Butler, especially given that the Wolves already have Corey Brewer and Shabbaz Muhhamed. You might have to give Mirotic. You might also have to wrap up all those non-guaranteeds and take back a guy like Alexi Shved, who is pretty much useless but costs 3 million for one more season. Let's assume that you have to give up Mirotic, Admunson and Mike James and take back Shved, but do get them to swap out Mbah a Moute. The teams would look like:

MIN:
pg: Rubio, Barea
sg: C. Brewer, Budinger
sf: Dunleavy, Muhammed
pf: Boozer/Gibson
cc: Pekovic, Dieng, Turiaf

pick 13, 16, 19, rights to Mirotic, maybe re-sign Dante Cunnigham

CHI
pg: Rose, Shved (bleh)
sg: K.Martin, Snell
sf: J.Butler, R. Brewer
pf: Love, Mbah a Moute
cc: Noah, G.Smith

no picks, maybe re-sign DJ Augustine or another backup PG type (big need).

I like the starting lineup, but I think that bench is really lacking scoring. Bulls could really round out their bench if they do their homework.

Rose, Hinrich or DJ
KMart, Xavier Henry (bench scorer for min)
Butler, Snell, Mbah A Moute
Love, Greg Smith
Noah, MLE Kaman if we still have it

That's a pretty good team. I feel like butler an Martin can be switched out once their contracts are up or if we trade them. Kaman can be instant offense down low and Henry could be a player that gets into passing lanes, gets to the lines and can create for himself.

Is there any way GarPax could roll the dice and land both Melo & Love while keeping Noah & Rose?

It sounds crazy but the Bulls did try and go after two max contract guys in Wade & Bosh. Reportedly that was close to being done too, not sure if I believe it or not.

The better the Boston offer seems like posturing. They have the best asset for a rebuilding team and they have cap space.

Hope I'm wrong, but i feel they are just waiting for GSW to give up Thompson.

How do you acquire value contracts though. Not Free Agency, and you won't get good Draft Picks, the only sure source of them, unless you suck or tank

you certainly won't in free agency, but you can certainly get them with non-premium first rounders like butler and taj

a healthy noah is on a good deal. taj as starter is on a good deal. butler will be on a good deal next year. dunleavy is on a good deal. mirotic is probably on a good deal. the draft picks likewise. hopefully MLE and mid-priced free agent as well assuming boozer is amnestied. that's several value deals. all would be dependent on derrick returning at a high level and somewhat justify what he is being paid. the only thing potentially preventing a crack at a title is that the payroll would be relatively low (salary cap level rather than luxury tax level, much like the ECF year). trading boozer for a fair value guy like love would allow us to push the payroll higher, but at the expense of cap space and other value assets

it's hard to win without an underpaid superstar. but bringing in an OVERpaid star like melo only makes things harder. and giving up quality assets to land a FAIRLY priced star like love is a dicey proposition

The majority of the league probably above MLE is overpaid relative to a position that only LeBron or KD are 'worth their money'.

which is why the majority of the league cannot compete with the heat or thunder

Can you elaborate? If the Bulls got rid of MDJ, Boozer, Gibson, and didn't sign Mirotic wouldn't they have enough money to pay for the two.

They have tons of assets in Mirotic, Gibson, Butler, 1st round picks from Bobcats, Bulls, maybe Kings.

first Love and Melo both have to really want the Bulls and have them be their #1 target

thats farfetched already right there

then you have to get Love and Melo and probably Derrick Rose too to all take less money

we're reaching low single digit percent chance of this happening now

They could get both....

Taj/Dunleavy/Butler 2-1st rd picks this year for Love

NY would have to accept a pretty weak S&T offer for Melo involving Boozer's expiring, contract filler (Snell, Brewer), then the Sacramento pick and Mirotic.

Rose - 18.5mm
Melo - 20mm
Love - 16mm
Noah - 12mm

Thats 66.5mm right there, so the rest of the roster would be minimum guys, a BAE and MLE guy, I think.

Do we know thats what Minny wants to do? They just hired Flip Saunders, who isn't exactly the rebuilding kind of coach. Maybe Minny wants to make a playoff run and get some of that revenue in their pocket. If they are looking for veterans to get them to the playoffs - I can see where Chicago is much more appealing.

Because if they are looking to rebuild Boston clearly has the better picks.

IMO Flip is going to coach the season to improve Minny's image and attract better coaching options next season. Likely he wants to keep Love, try and coach the team to the playoffs and convince Love to stay and attract a good young coach he can groom to take over.

Just as you noted I doubt he is taking over the coaching role to rebuild.

You can look at Flip both ways. Maybe he wants to set the tone for the young guys(they get in the Love trade)on the culture of the organization without any worries of being fired as he is the boss.

Or, he might not even want to trade Love now and wants to coach him.

When can a trade actually happen? I know the mid-season deadline is always in February, but when are trades allowed to resume?

Love and Melo have both listed the Bulls on their very short list of teams they would be interested in playing for this year, and both had the Bulls on the short list in the past too.

Not to mention one of the two stars being there would more than likely make it even more enticing for them to sign with the Bulls.

I'm sure guys like Love and Melo dont want to watch Lebron parade around and win more titles. Especially Melo. Nothing would do more for there legacy than being able to whoop Lebrons ass multiple times in Lebrons prime and add a couple rings to their resume.

BullsFTW wrote:I'd be happy to have either Love or Melo, but I'd like us to find out our chances on landing Melo before pulling a Love deal. We can find out through backchannels about Melo's intention on signing with the Bulls. If we can keep Taj, bring Mirotic over, and sign Melo, you go that route with no doubt.

I'm sure right before the draft, we'll get a clue on Melo's situation. This is also a reason I don't want Love to get traded by the draft. He should be Plan 1b, and Melo is Plan 1a.

I'm through with back channels. Let's not forget Woj's articles about World Wide Wes and that LeBron is coming to Chicago coming directly from insider sources.

If we can get a superstar-level talent in Love in a trade that Minnesota accepts, you do it and let Melo find another team or stay in NY. I'm tired of this team striking out on superstar talent in trades and free agency. My gut tells me Melo will be just another example like Kobe, Garnett, Gasol, Wade, Bosh and the aforementioned LeBron.

Per the Larry Coon CBA FAQ:

In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

When the trade deadline has passed. Teams are free to make trades again once their season has ended3, but cannot trade players whose contracts are ending or could end due to an option or ETO.

Playoff teams can trade players during the playoffs who are not on their playoff roster.

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q99

So Minny and Chicago could make a trade today as long as none of the players involved have options or ETO's on their contracts.

Wow today's the first time I honestly think we have a legit shot at Love. Not before this.

Get. It. Done.

I wonder if these reports of Chicago bidding on Love also puts extra pressure on NYK to make a move with Melo. If they think we are going to move on Love and not Melo they might want to hasten any possible deal with us to acquire Melo.

Rose and Love are friends, just maybe Rose is helping here. Gibson and Bulter with Multiple picks may get it done. I think the Bulls love this draft, but I also think all the players they want will be gone. What "if" the Bulls get Love and resign Deng to 8 million a year.

Noah, Love, Deng, Shooter, Rose. Can Mirotic play PF minutes and some backup SF minutes if needed? Would a Noah, Love, Mirotic front court work?

Also, why oh why does the NBA have the draft before Free Agency? Why can't they flip flop that. I'm scared if we do agree to a deal with the Knicks or Minny, and choose a player from them that they will flip on us.

Interesting thought. The front office thought they had a contender with Rose, Any SG, Booz, Deng and Noah before Rose's injuries, and now Boozer's decline. If you replace Boozer with Love, and got Deng back, you basically have that same "contending core" with the upgrade from Booz to Love. You still have Mirotic to bring over and back up the 3 and 4 spots, with the Deng/Mirotic split (how much time you slot Mirotic at the 3) varying depending on matchups. You still have MDJ, Hinrich (if you want him).
