I know most posters and experts for that matter are down on Deck's prospects as a prospect.

Today he made his 3rd start at AAA on his crusade to prove his worth. He probably had his best game as a professional tossing 7 IP giving up just 3 hits and a walk while striking out 10. His one blemish was a HR by Canadian Jordan Lennerton.

Keith Law said he has no chance at being a starter in his chat today.

He actually said he doubts it, which is quite a bit different than saying no chance.

Regardless, given where Deck was last season, "doubt it" is an enthusiastic vote of confidence in comparison.

I wouldn't expect much, but I am curious where he is with his velocity. By my count, he had 15 swinging strikes today. That's not bad for a guy who last season was by most accounts being forced to nibble around the edges because he was not able to challenge hitters with his underwhelming repertoire.

Confidence, mechanics, a better diet - didn't he get married in the off-season? Sometimes it takes a while longer for the tumblers to click into place. I wouldn't think his prospects of a pro career are any worse than Kyle Drabek's at this point, or Todd Redmond's for that matter. He always seemed to be done in last year by a particular bad inning, as if he couldn't pitch out of adversity - or from the stretch. Haven't seen that Bad Inning Syndrome so far this season.

Yeah, you're right he was terrible last year with runners on and in scoring position. I think he could have a great career as a reliever even if he can't be an effective starter. Somewhat like Cecil.

Ahhh...DJ Davis was on the verge of going 4 consecutive games without a K but ended up striking out in the bottom of the 9th.

Its nice to see McGuire making a slow and steady comeback but his numbers still aren't that impressive for a soon to be 25 year old in AA/AAA. He could have a future as a righty specialist out of the bullpen depending on what the splits say

McGuire took a similar approach as he did in his last outing pounding the lower part of the zone. He also showed to the ability to come inside on hitters and mix up speeds which kept hitters off balance. In fact the Mud Hens were so off balance that McGuire was able to match a career high with ten strikeouts.

After the game Allenson hinted that he believes if Deck continues to approach hitters in the same way he will be able to make a smooth transition into the majors perhaps sooner rather than later.

"When he gets that phone call from me at some point ... hopefully he doesn't change anything from what he is doing here," he said. Allenson was impressed with the huge strides that have been made from last season for McGuire.

I think there is a tendency on this board to be overly concerned with age and trying to match players to a single, developmental template. Most players who hit a certain age can be dismissed or disregarded as prospects. but there are always exceptions, and on a team that has two superstars, one who was a Rule 5 pickup and the other who was waived TWICE just a few years ago, I choose not to be rigid about such things. Is Deck headed for stardom? Highly unlikely. His ceiling might be as a marginal long reliever. But I don't strike him from all consideration because of his age.

DJ Davis hit his 5th HR of the season tonight...that's good. He's struck out on 3 of his last 5 AB's and made his 11th error...that's bad

Tirado had a really rough outing tonight. He only went 1.2 and gave up 5 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks. He did strike out 3. He's been really dissapointing this year. His walk rate has seen a huge spike this year. I know he's only 19, but I was expecting him to be a guy that really emerged as a top prospect this year.

Matt Boyd pitched 5 scoreless innings but still took the loss for Dunedin. He gave up just 2 hits and a walk and stuck out 6. They were facing Gabriel Ynoa who was brilliant 7 IP and 11 K's.

Pompey in a mini slump. 0-9 and 6 K's over the last two games.

Sean Nolin was on a 50-pitch limit for Buffalo. He pitched 3.1 and gave up 1 run.

Norris with about as poor a start as he has had, which is to say that he gave up four hits (all doubles/triples) and two earned runs over five, with 2 walks, 7 Ks and 6 groundouis versus no flyouts. Dwight Smith -- in the midst of a pretty substantial slump -- went 2 for 4 with an XBH, with Pompey 2 for 3 with an XBH and walk.

Nice start for Sanchez

Gave up three hits and a run, all in the second, then only one walk into the 7th when he surrendered a single.

6.2, 4H, 1BB, 1R/1ER, 7K

Mitch Nay with his third XBH (two doubles and a triple) in the past two games. He's been largely hitting singles all year, but his components still look fantastic; good walk rate, low strikeout rate, not getting overly lucky on balls in play, etc.

You gotta think it's only a matter of time with him before his stroke starts translating into in - game power.

Apparently Sergio Santos is beginning his rehab today in New Hampshire. Also, Frank Viola is scheduled to make the start in Lansing tonight. Taylor Cole is in Dunedin and Radhames Liz is starting for Buffalo.

Should be an interesting night for scoreboard watching.

Typed in deck McGuire into Google to check him out more and it came up that his age was 29(1985 birth year)

Most other sites have him as 25(1989 birth year) I just about fell outa my chair when I saw 29 on the first site!

Cole was good again for DJays
5.2/4H/2ER/2BB/7K

Gotta figure there may be promotions coming this week. If they win tomorrow or Lakeland loses I'm pretty sure they've clinckhed first half win and a playoff spot.

Deck is having a tough start to his day. 3 runs in the 1st already.

Liz went 5 2/3 giving up 3 ERs, 2 HRs. Another decent start.

AJ Jimenez who is now catcher #1 with Kratz up is hitting at .271 clip.
That's what she said.
