I don't think they do. It says flip Saunders would like him to be an assistant coach on the wolves.

If we can't sign a productive FA, why not.

Re: Do the team pick up billups option
So it is a team option? If that's the case, it isn't happening. Gores will make sure it is done with class, but bottom line, the roster spot and cap space are needed.
And we didn't sign him expecting him to return to his 2004 form. We signed him to help guide the youngsters on the team as sort of a player coach. And in that regard, he failed. Don't see any reason to continue that into this season.
Certainly wish him the best and always grateful for bringing us another banner. But time for him and the Pistons to move on.

Re: Do the team pick up billups option
Make him an front office guy, SVG said the front office will be about 25-30 people, there sure could be room for Chauncey. Chauncey always said he wants to go into front office after he's done, not coaching. And he really can't contribute anymore on the court. Pistons can use the capspace better and SVG knows this too.

Great former player. Bad current player.
I would be surprised if they kept him.

We need to let him go. Thanks for the memories but like Sheed he's collateral damage.
The more we cling to the past the less we focus on the future. We had a great run...how about we have another?
I'd love for Chauncey to move into the office though.

I hoping the team retains him in the front office in some capacity, but that may be more of a long shot now that Dumars and his trade guilt are gone.
Billups is one of my top 3 favorite Pistons of all time, but his playing days are over. He's barely seen the court over the last 3 years, and when he was on it, he wasn't effective.

Re: Do the team pick up billups option
I think it's important to give guys who were integral to the storied history of this franchise a place in it. Billups playing days are done, but I really hope the Pistons elect to bring him into the FO. SVG talks about having a 25-30 man FO, so there should be a spot for Chauncey, and he deserves it IMO.
I love SVG, but he should find spots for guys like Billups and Sheed, guys who are intelligent, know the game, and mean something to this franchise. You don't cast out everyone just for the sake of change. Same thing with Arnie and Mike A. Two guys who should stay.
Sentimentality has nothing to do with it since we are talking about capable people. Pistons need to show a little loyalty to these guys. Even Zeke who would be great as a minority owner speaker head.

I'm sorry but this is the exact thing the Pistons need to avoid in my opinion. That's how Joe D ended up having such a long leash. The Pistons ended up in this rut of the past few years because too many people were afraid firing Dumars would ruin his Pistons legacy. You mention sentimentality having nothing to do with it, so I don't understand why you would feel the need to find spots for people who don't make the cut. Players aren't "owed" spots in the organization after they retire. If they are capable of holding such positions, they will earn them. The training staff deserves to stay, they are very qualified for their positions, and have been through numerous staffs, so I don't expect change there.
I respect what they did for the Pistons on the court, but that doesn't translate into the ability to perform duties elsewhere immediately after they've retired, and the Pistons aren't in a position where they can hire mediocre employees simply to show some loyalty. Teams with solidified front offices, with a winning tradition can pull it off much easier, because they have all the right parts in place to guide these newbies in the right direction. Give the Pistons a few years, let them get settled into a routine with SVG and Co. and then this becomes an option again.

Loyalty/capability is totally different from sentimental feelings. We're not talking about hiring Chauncey/Sheed in such important roles as GM, so I don't see how that would continue us in a rut. Helping guys like Chauncey learn the front office, etc. is not the same as handing him a role for making top decisions.
You honestly would rather cast capable people out of here/ people that we should take care of, just because they were part of our history? If they are capable basketball minds why not teach them in small roles?
If Chauncey wasn't capable of working in a FO, then you wouldn't here me say keep him. That's the difference between sentimental feelings. You just don't let franchise legends walk out the door for other teams if you can help it. Guys like Charlie Sanders, Barry Sanders, Al Kaline, Willie Horton, Mickey Lolich, Jim Leyland all have spots in front offices and they aren't doing too bad. I don't think that's too much to ask for SVG and Gores to do for a guy who won us a championship, finals MVP, and allstar.

IF he was capable of holding a position, why wouldn't he get it? I don't think SVG is coming in and just cleaning house. Very much the opposite, he let Loyer's staff stick around for a while to assist in scouting and other aspects of the offseason. I don't get what Chauncey or Sheed have shown to prove they have what it takes to perform the jobs they were in contention for. I personally don't think Sheed is assistant coach material. Sure, he could be a good player development coach, with a player with a similar skill set, but Smith was awful last year, and Drummond is a very different player. Chauncey could very well be capable of running a whole front office himself, that I don't know, but I'll go out on a limb and guess that if he is capable he'll get a job.
Unless Sheed and Chauncey get turned down by the Pistons organization, and then immediately go to an organization that is run better than Detroit and get hired into the same positions they are being considered for here, I'm going to go with assumption the ones making the hiring decisions made the right calls.

Re: Do the team pick up billups option
1 - no one knows if Chauncey or Sheed is actually capable of performing the roles we assogn to them.
One could argue that Sheed didn't do much for Monroe & Drummond last season...and there is no real evidence Chauncey could be a scout or assistant GM. Billups is a popular guy - that doesn't qualify him for anything but love
2 - we don't have the structure in place to "support" former players learning their roles. We've been terrible for so long that I imagine SVG has to basically start from scratch!
3 - maybe Chauncey & Sheed don't like SVG? Maybe they simply don't mesh well? They could respect each other & get along fine but for all we know there is something that just doesn't click with them
People shouldn't assume SVG is clearing them out simply to move away from the past - they could be moving on because they just don't fit.

He should come back. Detroit needs the shooting and game management skills that Chauncey holds in spades.
