I'd been a friends' place in West Texas and everybody has guns in every room of their home, the dogs look like wolves, poverty is a real concern for physically hardworking people which should inherently lead to disillusionment and yet no one goes columbine. They just drink like tanks and do Texas stuff.

There was that whole UT Shooter thing... And the UT slasher a couple years ago... But Austin isn't like rural Texas...

Another thing I thought was interesting when I moved here from Cal, was that we have the right to shoot trespassers... Everybody knows everybody has several guns in their homes and cars etc... But it doesn't seem to really deter crime...
I live in a rural area... The kind of place with fenced property and gates and the kind of place you don't go on someone's property, even your neighbors, unless you're invited.
But right after I moved here, this guy came on my property and was trying to get me to invite him into my house because he was selling 'Omaha Steaks'... I ran him off, and sent word to my neighbors about him, but they all laughed at me and told me they do that all the time and it's legit... Turned out, he hit several houses in the neighborhood and ripped some of those same neighbors off.

The point being, if the fact that everyone in Texas has guns, and we have laws protecting our ownership and right to protect our property by shooting people for simply being on our property uninvited, doesn't prevent these **** from breaking into houses in this neighborhood, it isn't going to stop crime anywhere... So how much effect do having or not having guns have?

I mean even in Europe, where owning guns is illegal, they have mass shootings... Just not as many.

I don't like guns... Never have... But I've always believed the bad guys will always find a way to be better armed and victimize the good guys...

Yeah the idea that guns deter crimes is about as much false as guns promote mass killings. Ofcourse easy access to guns for the mentally ill should be controlled but the people barking on guns as the root cause couldn't be farther from the truth, the ones that go to great lengths to undergo background checks and legally buy are one of the most responsible ones too.

There are people who need that assurance to protect from ex-husbands, stalkers, animals in rural areas etc. Infact no one seems to be able to pinpoint the issue while the left and right wings wrangle on guns.

I think its the Sopranos where one characters says that US is one country where most people not born into abject poverty believes they are entitled to success, fame and happiness and when they don't get it they go loco.

Privileged kid is led to believe - likely, through no fault of his own - that the world will simply acquiesce to his desires. Major media, children's films and literature all reflect this mindstate. Once they realize they aren't some unique snowflake and that nothing is guaranteed, their world is shattered. They've learnt no appreciable skill or talent and are floundering.

That was a little rhetorical on my part... He has 'anti-American' songs... Not necessarily about actually blowing us up.
But they were strong enough to be interesting...

To equate these instances is disingenuous; one is an occurrence with motives that are seemingly incomprehensible and the other one is a simple crime of passion. You don't see people indiscriminately and premeditatively mass-killing over a perceived slight.

What's the unifying theme? Kids indoctrinated in their youth, before they have a clear sense of self and right and wrong... Of course there are exceptions, especially with terrorism, but I would wager that if you could interview a broad cross section of all of them, you'd find some startling similarities.

Yea, except the first two examples occur frequently everywhere in the world, not just North America. There are a slew of factors at work here - some identifiable, others not - that are creating these situations.

Now, we're getting somewhere... Somehow, someway an environment has been created that fosters and develops fanatical thinking within a certain vulnerable and receptive segment of the population.
