Coaching search
Maybe its time we got to this subject with Wiretap reporting a Del Negro interview and also possibly Tyronne Lue as well. I was never a Del Negro fan while he played and for some reason I just don't like the idea of him being our new coach, I cant give an exact reason but I think there are much better candidates out there.
I don't know what to think about Lue, I mean I liked the way he played, but being a shade under 5'9" I always have had a soft spot for smaller players who played with guts and had a super competitive attitudes. I don't know if a first time head coach is what I want to see though.
I wouldn't mind Alvin Gentry, he has coached a team to a 50 win season, and that is an accomplishment you cant take away from him regardless of how someone feels about him.
I think my first choice would be Lionel Hollins, based on the job he has done as a head coach in the past, and he seems to have a good demeanor and relationship with players.
If Thibidoe (sp?) becomes available I wouldn't mind him as he has been successful in Chicago, though I think the team mgt. is looking for a more offensive minded coach.

You have a solid, solid core in Irving, Waiters, Thompson + Wiggins/Parker/Embiid. This is a team to grow forward with, even if Irving decides to not extend and leaves. You need a coach who can grow with the team so it's got to be someone fresh. Stan Van Gundy could provide immediate results, but I'm not sure how the team would respond to him.

The flashy college picks - John Calipari, Billy Donovan, Shaka Smart
The flash TV picks - Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller
The safe picks - Mike Fratello
The best pick - Lionel Hollins

Agree on Hollins but disagree on Fratello. They need to start running actual offensive sets/plays. After the play ground approach by Scott, and the don't worry about offense approach by Brown, I don't think that they can bring in another coach who is singularly focused on defense.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

Re: Coaching search
Fratello gets a bad rap about being a defense only coach. Look back into his teams with Atlanta. He played slow down here due to a lack of talent. He has won a lot of games coaching both styles. He is by far the best coach I have seen here as far as drawing up plays coming out of timeouts and at the end of the half and the end of games. Probably the best coach period.
Lenny Wilkens gets a lot of credit for winning a lot of games, but he had far better talent than Fratello ever did here. I know he still is coaching overseas I believe, but I would more concerned about his age and/or how he would relate to todays NBA players than I would be about style of play or overall knowledge.
I don't think the team would actually consider him though, I believe they are looking for someone younger and who they think is more likely to be here long term. However laughable that is.

Too bad your not old enough to remember the crap Mike had to coach here in Cleveland. He almost always managed to get to the playoffs. In his six seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers his record was 248 wins and 212 losses. Fratello took the Cavaliers to the playoffs four times with stiffs!
After two years his starting line up was Brevin Knight, Wesley Missing Person, Cedric Henderson, Kemp and Z with bad feet. and MADE THE PLAYOFFS. Yes his ball was boring to watch but he won. Two years laster he took Terrell Brandon, Bobby Phills, Chris Mills, F'ing Danny Ferry and Micheal Cage to the playoffs and then two more times too.
He always got the most out of our scrubs. Yes he never made it out of the first round but Mike Brown would not have won 20 games with those teams.
I agree that he's not a likely coach but I would not complain if he was.

Reportedly Gentry and Lue getting second interviews, I don't know which would be better, I wonder if age is any kind of factor in the Cavs thinking?

Yeah between this and the Calipari story, I'm begining to worry. I think Griffin might be GM in name only.

After watching the Finals here is a suggestion I think that would be best: Spurs win (Which Cleveland would love) Tim Duncan retires and Tim Duncan is offered the coaching spot. When he's on the floor he is the general!
I know not likely but just saying

David Blatt would be the best man for the job. Cream of the crop in Europe, good X's and O's guy who gets a lot out of his players. Good basketball mind.

He's leaving Macaabi and coming to the NBA. He's announcing where he's going in a press conference in a couple hours

My money is on Blatt going to the Warriors to assist Kerr.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

Blatt will go to NBA. He left Maccabi today. It's either Cavs or Warriors, but he gives advantage to HC position.
So, congrats Cavs fans, now you'll have the real deal @ bench.
