I posted this as an analysis on page one of this thread. I did NOT expect a 5-1 smashing of the World Champions. But then.... I don't think anybody realistically did? Amazing performance, still not convinced we can go all the way as it seemed to me Spain just became very poor in the second half, inexplicably so (rain???) but the question I raised about Robben and RvP playing together has been answered with an emphatic HELL YEAH.

So, interesting times ahead!

EuroPacer wrote:Here is my analysis of the Netherlands' chances for this World Cup:

The key is that the manager (Louis van Gaal) has actually changed the way the Netherlands play, shaping the team to a 5-3-2 variant to fit the available personnel.

This is key because it reveals a number of things:

The midfield isn't as good as it once was, Sneijder has played in a poorish division for a few years now, Strootman is injured and although exciting prospects Wijnaldum and Clasie aren't quite experienced enough to do anything at a World Cup. De Guzman and Fer are solid role-players but not a lot more and Nigel de Jong is where the 5-3-2 becomes revealing: Van Gaal will likely play him as a midfield enforcer behind Sneijder and one of the other candidates.

The defence is a massive work in progress with some very young/inexperienced players, they haven't got 100 caps between them and Ron Vlaar is the most experienced man, but is he capable of turning the likes of De Vrij and Martins Indi into proper centre backs in a system that relies on two wing-backs (Janmaat and Blind) to find the space in front all the time? Behind them a selection of inexperienced (at international level) goalies. I would go with Krul but it looks like Van Gaal will favour Cillessen of Ajax. By the way, don't be fooled by not having heard of De Vrij and Martins Indi, you will soon enough, both are being targeted by big European clubs.

The attack is by far the most potent part of the team, Dirk Kuyt is coming along as pinch-hitter, Robben and Van Persie will lead the attack to start each game and if needed Huntelaar (underrated!) can come on to force things as a centre-forward. My issue with the system is the reliance on Robben and Van Persie playing well together, there is no denying they are incredible players individually, but can they break open a dogged Aussie backline or the crafty Chileans?

I reckon the Netherlands will get out of the group in second place, behind Spain, but only just. That will likely mean Brazil in round two and although exciting because young, there is no way that this defense can stop Neymar and co from scoring.
Vogel is Dutch for Bird.

Nicely done by Cahill.

Jordan never fully understood basketball. He had the lowest basketball IQ of any NBA "superstar" in history.

Probably Tim Cahill

We used to have to qualify through Oceania which meant we had to beat the 5th placed South American qualifiers to get in, the only times we ever managed to do it we had fairly strong teams. Now we're qualifying through Asia so it's a much easier run. We'll qualify for pretty much every WC but not be good enough for any of them.

Spain will bounce back next game.

I still think we make it out of the group, but were not winning anything this year.

The Europe has never won in the Americas will stay true this year.

I just don't see Brazil playing well enough to deserve to win, with fifa and home nations you can never discount them winning despite not playing well enough, but I just can't see it, and seeing them barely avoid a draw against a just solid/good croatian team did little to alter that.

Argentina will walk through their group...and get walked over by us or the portuguese in the knockouts and Colombia just don't have the players further back to make it all of the way. I just don't see a viable south american winner to prevent a european team from taking it.

Germans Aren't going anywhere and if they face Argentina this year it will be their demise.

Wouldn't mind seeing the fella move to a bigger club, he's improved significantly the past few seasons.

cgf wrote:is the tiebreaker GD or H2H? Cause I could totally see Spain taking this beating out on the chileans and aussies.

Goal difference.

Yeah, he's one of a few players I was hoping to see linked to schalke like Geis or Natkho, although his price has likely risen out of their realm.

4 goals will be tough to make up but if they beat the chileans by 2 or 3 goals it's not unlikely, even if the dutch do roll over in the third match.

Eh, we won't win because Jogi, but the argentinians won't do **** either and would get wrecked by either of the big two from our group.

italy and france are the only european teams with a chance to win it and their chances certainly lower than south americans.

You're writing off the iberians far too quickly, and who knows with the dutch, they weren't this good when they went to the final last time.

Holland made a huge statement today and silenced all those silly pundits putting them at 3rd in the group.

spain and tiki take is dead, past 2 year shown us that. dutch are too inexperienced, i just don't see portugal having the horses to win it all although they are the most likely of the bunch.
