When is the first off season trade?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Mon Jun 16, 2014 8:28 pm

So I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the trade moratorium is lifted now that the season is done. 10 days until the draft. Are there any trades already queued up and ready to happen, or will this have to wait until draft night? And of course, will we be making any trades this summer?

Teams could start trading again when their individual seasons ended. There hasn't been any smoke of a deal for anybody as far as I can tell but I think there's a good chance something draft-related happens (maybe/probably not for Detroit) before the 26th.

I don't think we'll see major trades until the last few days leading up to the draft at the earliest.

My guess is the first trade will involve Monroe in a few weeks. I think the Pistons will wait to see how that plays out before making any other roster decisions, but I wouldn't be surprised if we made a minor draft day trade to get another pick, involving cash or some of our role players like Singler/KCP/Bynum etc

Its hard to believe in only 2 weeks this roster could look dramatically different, and we'll finally have a conclusion to the Monroe saga one way or another.

I don't expect to see much before the actual day of the draft. I may be wrong but I don't believe the rosters actually reset until July 1, ie we wouldn't have cap space to do anything on draft night. We might be able to do a handshake agreement to take back salary but I'm not expecting too much activity from us during the draft.

I think most teams are fleshing out their boards right now. It won't be until the boards are set when we actually see stuff happening. If you are team like Sacto and you've got 6 guys you really want on your board, no reason to trade pick #8 until you know all 6 are gone.

Agreed, a lot of talk before the draft, but it usually seems the actual trades come on draft day itself. I think a few teams want to move their picks if they can get something good, so I'm expecting things to pick up. Especially once most of the private workouts are complete.

Monroe won't be S&T'd until at least the middle of July because he'll need to go through the courting process a bit and then choose if he wants to sign elsewhere and then the two teams, us and the signing team, will have to sit down before the offer sheet is signed and see if we could work out a S&T. If we can than Moose leaves, if we can't than Monroe looks elsewhere or signs an offersheet for max money and we match and he comes back for four years.

Free agency begins July 1st, so that's the earliest anything is happening with Moose. And unless we get a GREAT sign and trade offer, we will just match. So I 100% expect Moose to be on our team this year. Any chat about him looking around is just trying to drive up his price.

Moose may just choose to wait to be an UFA... more choices where he has complete control.
For trades, history shows that teams generally wait for the new cap and their contracts to expire b4 actively pursuing deals.

Nothing can officially happen with Monroe (or anybody else) until July 10th. I don't expect him to take much time deciding on an offer to accept though. Other teams will probably want to know how this situation will end up ASAP so they can go in a different direction if need be. I'm in agreement with you too - the more than likely outcome right now is Detroit matches any offer then trades him later for better value if that's their plan.

Injury risk is too great, even with a killer insurance policy.

UFA still doesn't get you as much money as signing with your original team. I think most guys will sign for the most possible, even if it isn't in the best situation. Then once they have the hefty contract in place, they start to maneuver for a trade. Regardless of what Monroe is thinking, this will be a big drama for us this summer.

Probably won't see a significant trade until draft night, or a few days before if some teams come to terms on trading a pick early.

Trade season usually doesn't begin until after free agency has cooled down and teams start looking towards trading their assets to gain players of need. It's basic logic, and generally how it goes every year, barring a blockbuster trade that a star forces to happen.

I got K. Love being traded during the draft. Watch the Celtics, Suns, and Lakers. *If I was betting man, I'll put my money on the Suns.*

Lebron might opt out. Melo will opt out. I don't think we'll see any major trades until those two dominos fall into place.

I've got both of those dudes opting out. Lebron & Melo have to put the pressure on their respective teams to sell them on their personnel moves. Melo will wait and see what Chicago and Houston do to create salary cap room for him. The Knicks will be working the phones to get a first round pick and make trades. Miami has to be creative, to remake what they've got into something worth committing to.

The championship ride is over for them, if they can't build something for Lebron.

I find someone to take Jennings and Smith.

I find a way to keep and develop Monroe.

Let Stuckey and Villaneuva walk.

I want Detroit going hard after Eric Bledsoe and Kyle Lowry, we desperately need a pg upgrade.

I want Detroit pursuing a trade that results in a serviceable 3. Get Chandler Parsons...Gordon Hayward...Luol Deng...maybe Trevor Ariza.

I am hoping for a trade on draftnight, sending out Smennings and getting somehow a shooter and/or a draftpick in return. I know its probably totally bogus, but i can dream, can i. :p

Trades before the draft are pretty rare, so that is the most likely first trade for any team.

As for the pistons, I doubt we see anything major this summer except the outside chance of a monroe sign-and-trade. We have cap space, so that is probably where any major acquisitions will come. It doesn't sound like we are going to dump Smith for nothing, so I expect we'll try to rehab his value before anything happens on that front.

I'm betting Lebron stays in Miami but the Big 3 are broken up with Bosh traded home to Houston for Asik, Lin, #25.
