Boris Diaw

Post#1 » by Nolan » Sun Jun 15, 2014 4:15 pm

Where would we be without this guy?

I can't think of another role player in the league that's so vital to his teams success on both ends. He's a matchup nightmare on the offensive end and on the defensive end he can switch on to anyone and be effective.

I have a feeling that we wouldn't be here without him.

Thoughts?

My biggest question is what made him more "scoring" minded this year? We've seen him the last two years and the knock on him in Charlotte was that he's just too focused on passing that he's not even looking to shoot wide open shots. This year, everything changed. Suddenly we can use him in a variety of ways including post ups and now he's just playing awesome when he looks to score first instead of thinking pass first.

Also, it helps that he's a big skinnier this year too. I'm guessing that the summer play kept him in shape compared to years past. If he can lose another 10 pounds, he'd be awesome.

Right now, I don't really know how much it'll take to keep him. Originally I was thinking the same 4.5 mil per year deal that he got from San Antonio. He's older now, but playing better than when he got that contract, so will he get more, less, or the same?

Pop demands that you take your shot to get playing time. He gets furious with guys who pass up open shots they can make. Some people used to say Patty Mills shot too much, but he has to play that way to stay on the floor with Popovich. It's starting to sink in with Danny green as well.

This isn't Diaw's first or second season with us. It's his third. And even when he passed up open shots, it got him a 2 year 9 mil deal and still 23 minutes of playing time. He got 25 minutes a game this year. So I hardly think the reason he's shooting it now is because he wouldn't stay on the floor if he didn't. He was on the floor when he wasn't shooting.

he's been massive for us this year, seriously stepped up and helped on both ends of the floor.
And i really like typing his name out in capital letters when he makes a 3.

Loving the production Diaw is giving us.
I wouldn't be outraged if he won FMVP that's how good he has been.

He's a player that I thought would be a good fit for a while with us. I'm glad he got the chance to make a mark in San Antonio.

Now I just hope he doesn't return next year all fat. It's amazing how being fit changes a player's game so much. We see it with TD being skinnier. With Diaw. With Mills.

Diaw is awesome... Our new Robert Horry. Game Changer.

I thought he was upset about himself last postseason? He took responsibilities for the team losing. Good guy. He's an FA and people know him, could the Spurs keep him? How much? I'd imagine he'd like to stay, maybe a longer contract?

Two years ago he was a FA. He was 30 year old, and he looked great in half a season with us after coming from the Bobcats. The Spurs sign him to 2 year 9 million deal.

The positive side is that he's coming off his best performance. The negative side is he's now 32 years old.

So I think he gets the same deal as he did 2 years ago. 4.5 mil per year. Either 2-3 year deal.

Sounds good!

I'm sure he enjoys being with the team. I can imagine since he worth more maybe the Spurs would gift him an extra year or two this time.

And I could easily see him packing on more pounds after this year.

I'm worried about his cavalier attitude to re-signing in his exit interview. I'm hopeful he stays and keeps his weight as is (or ideally, trimmer). Diaw is more essential than Mills in some ways.

Since he's playing in Fiba, I'm guessing he'll come back fit again. He came back pretty fit last summer after winning the title for whatever that tournament was.

Just curious, I know times have changed in the NBA, but how old is too old now by NBA standards? Timmy at 38 (with managed minutes) played superbly this year. I think the players know their bodies the best and how far they can push it. I don't consider 32 old, I haven't noticed too much of a drop off in Boris' step. Dropping the weight helped him though. Boris was solid this year.

But Timmy is the exception, and even then, he's on a decline. Basically it's a given that once you step past 32 years old, you're gonna be on the decline. Your prime is at 27-30 years old, at most 32. Atleast athletically.

For example Diaw, it's not really about how old he is now, but how old when he's at the end of his contract basically. He's easily worth 6 million now. But will he worth 6 million when he's 35-36 years old and how likely is it that he's going to maintain his current production?

Young guys get paid on potential. Old guys usually the one who suffer salary wise, espeecially the role players. Star players don't really have this issue as much because there's a loyalty factor when you pay older star players.

Good point, makes sense. Amazing how Favre played beyond his prime in the NFL after 40 although his decline was pretty obvious by then. I don't think I would be able to get out of bed on time at that age playing all those NFL years.
