Full Max - might be what a 2M per year overpay? Trade him anywhere we want in a year with three years left on his deal as a 24 yr old 16 & 10 center if we think he's too expensive for our salary structure.

No way he's allowed to walk.

I'm expecting him to be gone via S&T, if nobody offers anything good then we will just match. Might not be a great fit here, IMO, but he isn't walking for nothing.

Lakers could really screw us though if Moose decides to sign a offer sheet with them. They have no good assets and would pretty much force us to match. We need a team who can't afford him in FA to pony up a good trade offer.

We match and worst case can't trade him until next off-season if he sulks and plays hardball with us. Otherwise we could trade him to any team other than the Lakers come December.

The only way Monroe signs an offer sheet with another team is if he wants to play for the Pistons. If after several days he hasnt signed an offer sheet then he is working on a sign and trade.

Its going to be several days no matter what because Monroe can't officially sign an offer sheet until the 10th or 11th. Theres going to be talk of signing and trading if Monroe comes to agreement with a team, or not before the officially signing period.

^We'll know rather quickly though - even if it can't officially be done. I mean if it's a max deal he's after he signs it and Detroit announces they'll match and it's done. If he wants out he'll take that unsigned offersheet to SVG and Bower and tell them he wants out and then have that that team contact the Pistons to see what it would take via trade.

Monroe, if he wants out, is basically treated as a max player who's requested a trade for all intents and purposes.

I could see it being resolved quickly if Lebron, and Bosh opt in, and Love is traded before free agency. Otherwise I don't see Monroe's situation being resolved quickly, because those guys are going to put everything up in the air for everyone else.

If the Pistons don't plan with Monroe you look for a sign and trade. You just can't let him go just because somebody offered the max, thats the worst the Pistons can do. He just has too much value for that, you still can trade him later.

Roy Hibbert saw $14M, Josh Smith also saw just under that amount. Detroit will probably balk at anything over that amount per season. A lot of players are overpaid, but this is a player's market.

Monroe is worth about 10-12M, so 14 wouldn't upset me too much. If he wants more, let another team be the fool and Detroit moves on.

I was meaning several days after the 10th. I dont count July 1-10 as anything. All the talk will be rumor, propaganda and centrifuge. No need to partake in any of it.

My point is that once Monroe signs an offer sheet he no longer has any leverage on where he plays. At that moment he no longer is in control. If he signs an offer sheet quickly then its all about the money but if he doesnt then its about location and then we are screwed.

SVG has predictably praised both Monroe and Smith, but reading between the lines I think he's less enthusiastic about Smith. My guess is we match on Monroe, and move Smith if there's an acceptable offer. If not, I wouldn't be surprised to see both back and SVG should do a better job in making it work.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I'm sure he would rather have Monroe than Smith. If he can't find a trade partner for Smith soon though then I honestly think Monroe is gone. You just can't build a proper team paying two players at the same position 13+ mil.

Plus SVG has to start to consider Drummonds max in two years when signing any deals right now. SVG can build a good team with all. Monroe is a good player but realistically we can build a lot better team not resigning him.
