The Joel Embiid Injury Thread

Post#1 » by fatlever » Thu Jun 19, 2014 8:11 pm

I figured he deserved his own thread rather than in the general thread.

If he falls all the way to 9, would you take a chance on him?

There is no way in hell he drops this far. Only way it happens is if the foot problem is incurable or something.

If it's not a chronic issue I'd take him for sure.

He's going to drop in Danny Ainge's lap. It will be a nice consolation prize for Ainge swing-and-miss on Kevin Love for #6, #17, Olnyk/Sullinger + other goodies. Ainge was really ready to go all-in for Love but the Celtics really need to keep pick 6 because they really need to build a front court. I wish I could revise my mock.

1-Parker
2-Wiggins
3-Exum
4-Smart
5-Vonleh
6-Embiid
7-Randle
8-Gordon
9-STAUSKAS

Chris Mannix ‏@ChrisMannixSI 24m

Several medical experts have described Embiid's type of injury to me as serious. Say navicular bone is the slowest healing in the body

Steve Kyler ‏@stevekylerNBA 19m

.@kennethmacleod: ---> Could Embiid play after this injury -- very possible, Zydrunas Ilgauskas did, but after two years of issues.

Jeff Stotts ‏@RotowireATC 41m

A navicular fracture for Embiid is a HUGE blow. Much more significant than a metatarsal fracture.

Steve Kyler ‏@stevekylerNBA 41m

If you draft Embiid you risk that he may never be a productive player for you. How many teams can really afford to do that in this draft?

Rick Bonnell ‏@rick_bonnell 41m

No, I can't imagine Joel Embiid falling all the way to Hornets' ninth pick.

Steve Kyler ‏@stevekylerNBA 46m

.@StevenKirk_OH: Embiid was atop LAL draft board, would they take him? ---> Two back injuries, a 6 month foot injury and a questionable knee

Steve Kyler ‏@stevekylerNBA 50m

.@ryanp90: Z from the cavs had a similar injury earlier in his career ---> Played five games in two years after the surgery too

Steve Kyler ‏@stevekylerNBA 54m

.@EricThePelican: How far could he drop ---> Far. This is not a minor thing, this is a very risky injury.

Steve Kyler ‏@stevekylerNBA 56m

Yao Ming fractured his navicular bone, and ultimately required 12 pins to stabilize the spidery cracks that developed as a result.

Kelly Dwyer ‏@KDonhoops 1h

You don't [mess] around with big men who develop stress fractures in their NON-jumping foot.

Zach Lowe ‏@ZachLowe_NBA 1h

Hard to exaggerate how much this Embiid news is throwing teams at the top of the draft for a loop. Week away, no one knows what to do.

Stress fractures have been major problems for other big men. His injury is to the same bone that Yao had so much trouble with, though we don't have any idea if it's that serious yet.

If he falls to 9 .... My gut says skip him ... But on the other hand the Hornets are probably the lotto team that can wait on him to heal and allow him to have limited minutes as long as thy still have Al.

Len and Noel went 5 and 6 last year, granted it was a much weaker class, so I have a hard time believing he slides past 5.

My first instinct is to take him and not look back, but if he falls that far I'm sure that means there's more we don't know. And you know he's not sharing medical info with the ninth team.

The thing is the Cavs doctors found the foot thing in their physical. Remember those red flags that leaked out while Cleveland tried to scrub that saying his workout was so impressive? The Cavs once again are trying to sucker teams into drafting up for pick 1. They probably loved Embiid about as much as they loved Bennett - terrified - and much preferred to trade down out of pressure. They should take Jabari and just suck it up. If I'm the Sixers I consider packaging 3 + 10 for Jabari.

Cleveland's going to pick Noah Vonleh at number 1. Book it.

One difference between Embiid and Walton, Big Z, and Yao is body size and weight.

Would seem that because he is lighter and doesn't have that much pressure on his feet he would heel better, but the question would be that at already not having that much pressure why was it so prone to being fractured.

I still take him at 9 if by a miracle he is there. The upside is too great. He would be a great compliment to Al or any of our PFs. His back injury seems to not be an issue with physicals. If for some reason he doesn't pan out then we still have cap space this year and the late first pick to address our needs that would still help us if Embiid doesn't.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE...DO NOT TAKE!
Look, this represents the last shot in the lottery for what we hope are many years. The break, if as described, is extremely serious and the prognosis is not favorable. Let Boston or whomever take a chance on this guy. We need no major drama now...take the best available HEALTHY player that can impact our needs.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I still think I take him at #9 if available. But I would want our best Orthos to look at the meds to give us their opinion also. If they say definitely No, then No it is.

I'd take him and immediately go hire the best medical team money can buy. The thought of twin towers of Embiid + Jefferson is too much to pass on. Sure this may be our last lottery for years, however, the talent is to great o pass up on. Even if he doesn't come back for two years, if he develops into 75% of the center he was projected and stays healthy for a significant number of years, then he is a top four pick in this draft. That is how much talent this guy has.

Lost in this is what a huge blow it is to Orlando, with Exum almost certainly going in the top 3 now.

Orlando really can't afford to take Embiid, they have about as much talent as Milwaukee or Philadelphia

Or, it could be a ploy by his shady agent to get him to LA or Boston
