Do all NBA players lift weights intensely?

Post#1 » by pr0wler » Thu Jun 19, 2014 10:30 pm

Reason why I bring up this question is because I see a lot of guys in the NBA who people constantly say "Oh he could use some more strength, he could add some more muscle". And I agree. There are a fair number of players who I don't think have maxed out what their body is capable of. I understand genetics are super important, but when you're playing for millions of dollars a year how come players wouldn't go all out to get the best build they can achieve? Or have they maxed out what they can get, reasonably speaking, and just don't have the genes to pull it off?

Relevant examples include Kevin Durant, Chandler Parsons, Steve Nash, Chris Bosh, and many others. Why aren't they stronger? There are lots of guys like Joakim Noah, JJ Redick, and Jeremy Lin who entered the league relatively thin but have filled out and added a lot of muscle. Why can't everyone do that with all the resources and tools available to them?

Some guys don't have the body type to put on a lot of muscle (ectomorph). I remember Bosh saying that he tried to gain weight but he just couldn't

That's true, I remember Trevor Ariza saying the same thing too

I don't know, but I want to know what the f#ck Derek Fisher does to stay in the shape he is in. I mean, dude is nearly 40 years old and still has the physique of a 20 year old. Amazing.

Most nba players are weak as crap.....look at players with their shirts off, they have no pecs, no biceps. Lebron and Wade's body's are as good as you will find in the nba, everyone else you can't tell they workout

NBA players do not not lift heavy, they just do high reps

Following NBA training programs will not get anyone big

Well nba athletes don't lift heavy because they'll just get big and bulky. That's not optimal for playing basketball.

Theres a difference between gaining strength and muscle size. Strength comes from the central nervous systems ability to adapt to the stress being placed on it and muscle size comes from the muscle fibers being broken down and rebuilt to grow larger. You wont see much muscle growth in NBA players because the sport they play burns hundreds of calories per day. They would need to be in a huuuge caloric surplus to gain size since they are lifting weights and playing ball. Not to mention how fast these guys metabolic rates are and also their freak genetics like Dwight Howard and his broad ass shoulders

Dont underestimate NBA players, small size doesnt always mean they arent strong

You realize, some big and naturally strong NBA players border superhuman. Read what Arnold said of Chamberlain and how much stronger he was than himself or other bodybuilders. A guy like Kanter is no joke.

I started cycling every day but have yet to notice any definition or gains in mass. some guy on a message board said I could cycle and then "do any work out I want" and it won be so easy it would be like cheating. I've been cycling every where and still no muscle mass.

Most of them are extremely skinny.. They might all lift but I doubt many lift "intensely". Putting on alot of upper body mass leads to knee injuries when you run that much.

In before Serge Ibaka....

Some players do lift, but mix it up so that it's more practical for basketball.

Bosh put on 15 lbs in his final season in Toronto and was noticeably bigger. He had the best year of his career, but he lost all that weight by the end of the season.

Of course they do, everyone seems to follow the same program that allows them to gain the golden standard "15 pounds of muscle" every summer

It's true. According to that program Anthony Randolph would be tipping the scales at about 400 pounds by now.

For perimeter players, legs and core are the most important.

For big men, legs and core are the most important.

Duncan does that, but in reverse.
