Do you honestly think that Algeria, Nigeria, and a washed up Ivory Coast are going to make for exciting and competitive round of 16 matchups?

I think you're relying too heavily on perceived strength and reputation for your argument here.

No, what I'm saying is that some groups are a joke and will let sub par teams through into the round of 16.

Again though, you'd be including Costa Rica in your argument had they qualified from a seemingly weaker group on the basis of their reputation. Yet here they are, qualified already, having beaten two teams who apparently have a divine right to the Round of 16.

are you advocating american system of coaches and journos voting for rankings? that will go smoothly with high integrity establishment like fifa.

Why don't they just put seeds 1-8 in different groups, then seeds 9-16, etc. They can use their official ranking system (as much as it blows) to do this.

they are beating out uefa and afc teams, guess gotta take teams away from those confederations.

Sweden got the tough break of being in the same group as Germany in the UEFA WC qualifier. Greece was in the same situation as Sweden but drew Romania, Sweden drew Portugal who I think are a tad bit tougher than Romania. Bosnia's most difficult teams in their UEFA qualifier group were Slovakia and Greece, they're not Germany.

They lost 2 1 goal games to Portugal.

Put Sweden in over Bosnia and Greece and it'll be a little harder for Ivory Coast/Nigeria. I think most if not all would want to see Sweden over Greece who may go out of this tourney without a goal scored.

greece always gets the easiest draws, it is in the by laws of uefa. bosnia absolutely deserved to go over sweden.

They made their way into Pot 1 with the Euro win and have hung on ever since. Turkey could have done the same after 2002 but failed to take advantage.

i don't think turkey ever got to pot 1. but i do remember missing out on some tourny due to losing to latvia and azerbaijan so fall from the grace is well deserved.

I just explained why they can't do that.

And since they have to set the unseeded pots by confederation, they can't do what they do in the Champions League have each pot be determined by team rankings.

you could have 3-4 uefa or conmebol teams in the same group, do you really want to watch another copa america or euro cup?

Why not? I just want to see the most competitive tournament possible. I don't care about geographic representation.

Lukaku, what a disaster. Not doing anything right, and terrible mentality too after his sub. Origi suits this system a lot better.

Hazard is also such a special player. Totally invisible for 85mins, but 1 flash or brilliance fired up the team again and another great assist 2mins later decided the game.

Dunno why this team always needs a spark to start playing like this. Such a talented group, what a shame. Cant keep relying on Hazard to decide the game everytime. Wont work against better teams.

Though i think the counter attack suits this team better. We're not (2010) spain, we dont have those kinds of players.

Also think the defenders n Courtois can really win us a game later in the tourney. Great job again.

I like Witsel better when he has Dembele by his side, so he can play more aggressively. His feet barely stepped on the final third today.

Next game I'd start Dembele and play Fellaini as a false nine for better retaining of possession. Then you'd have Witsel and De Bruyne with more freedom to play the last third more often.

then lets drop the qualifying and pitch conmebol teams against top ten euro teams. they are the only ones to win the world cup.

That's how Witsel is in general. You should see him play for Zenit. He is passive bordering on lethargic.
