It's 30C with 70% humidity in Manaus, they have to have them.

I don't care.

The players should get a "timeout" but I thought FIFA wasn't allowing water breaks?

Frustrating to pretty thoroughly outplayed Portugal and have nothing to show for it. We need to be more patient, Portugal is practically gift wrapping passing lanes to our players.

I will so it's pretty encouraging that we look like a real soccer team because between the Ghana game and the first ten of this one we were playing high school kick the ball away as fast as we can. I don't know why the goal seemed to wake up but it's nice seeing us playing the possession game.

We aren't playing well at all (portuguese here). Our offense is miserable, with Ronaldo playing hurt and Nani totally out of sync apart from the goal and that other shot. Our midfield is non-existent, with Moutinho being the only one who can make a pass.

USA playing well, but seemed to me they were running out of gas by the end of the half.

That's the reason I've never been particularly comfortable with Cameron as a center half. He's prone to epic mistakes, either via miskick or lost mark, and you can live with that much more at CDM because you have insurance there. That's where I'd move him to at some point in the 2nd half. He can play some killer balls over the top from there, is good at one touch football, and you can count on a hero run or two per half from him. In his place substitute Brooks and jettison Beckerman. Beckerman has been somewhat shaky on and off the ball again, and without Brooks we have little set piece threat.

The other change I'd make early on, maybe this one from the start of the half, is subbing in Johannsson or Wondo for Bedoya. Bedoya is doing nothing, Portugal is already a little back on their heels protecting a lead, and that's where players like Wondo and Johannsson can be effective because they aren't particularly good target players or attackers but they just have a nose for goal and they shouldn't have far to go to get on the ball.

The third sub I'd consider later is Yedlin for Beasley, with Johnson switching to the left. Beasley is pretty much useless going forward at this point in his career and he's panicky and gets pushed around at the back due to his lack of size. That missed header giving Portugal a set piece just outside the box was inexcusable. Yedlin is inconsistent at defending, but has excellent potential there, and is vastly superior going forward with his speed, moves, dribbling, and creativity. That's more your 80th minute sub though because it's risky.

Overall, this has been a rather even game quality chance-wise. But it's about taking them and not creating them for the other team, which Portugal did better, so they're up 1. I'm not pessimistic going into the 2nd, though.

That water break kind of hurt the US. Lost momentum after it, and Portugal had regained control.

Portuguese are saving energies and even though it may seem USA has been playing more, the truth is that ball possession is the same and Portugal has made more shots, most of them on goal unlike USA shots
