Not impossible, but I'm doubting whether he can even be an NBA player, much less which position he can play.

This, he's extremely raw, not quick or agile enough to effectively play SF, but has tremendous athleticism as a PF. He'll maybe be a rotation guy, but i wouldn't be suprised if he was cut next year

He's not a SF. Did last season of Josh Smith at SF slip your mind?

like others have said, he needs to prove he belongs in the league before we move him to SF, but i'm still optimistic about him.
I could see him play SF if the match up suits. He needs to improve his jumpshot, but his athleticism and size could make him a favorable mismatch for us at SF.

Kid didn't light up the D-League when he was there, which is not a good sign as to his future prospects. I'd be interested in reading about how he's spending this off-season, where and who he's working out with. He should be in Detroit working with the new coaches like Siva and Datome are, and with Kander.

I found his inclusion on this bust list by Freep's Perry Farrell interesting. Is this his personal feeling, or something he's getting/sensing from those around the team? Notice Peyton Siva isn't mentioned -

The team’s scouting department could come under a lot of scrutiny with the number of disappointing draft picks: Austin Daye, Walter Sharpe, Kim English, possibly Tony Mitchell, Terrico White, DaJuan Summers and Deron Washington.

Austin daye- Look at the other picks of that draft, not exactly all star draft.
Walter Sharpe- late round pick, how many late round picks on average turn out to be great players
Kim English, Tony Mitchel, Terrico White, DaJuan Summers, Deron Washington-- all 2nd round picks

Kawai Leonard is the only miss i really could get mad at our scouting team for. and then again, i don't think he becomes the player he is now, on this detroit team

Kawhi was pretty raw coming in, 14 teams missed on him. I begrudge them more for Kemba (coming off carrying his team to a title) and Klay Thompson (a plug & play 2 guard) though Knight was looked at as a steal and was a viewed as a very likely top 5 pick until draft night.

Kemba was perceived as a undersized chucker, and i believe we still had BG on our books at the time, and were looking for a PG to compliment STuckey at SG, after his failed PG experiment. Klay Thompson would have been nice, however SG was last in the list of needs. Knight looked like a steal , however his development has somewhat been lack luster. Jury's still out on knight, however there were definitely more ready now prospects from that draft, and knight still struggles with TO issues

Taking "need" over talent because we had BG & Stuckey highlights the cluelessness of Dumars last few years. Dumars turned us into the Atlanta Hawks of tanking, it takes a special type of clueless screw up to create a team that picks between 7-9 every year.

It wasn't as simple as that

At the evaluation of talent

Kemba=Knight

They were perceived about equal where Knight had higher upside because of his size

Klay Thompson

Basically was a 3 point specialist , but a good one

Kawai Leonard

Freak Athlete SF

As i said it wasn't as simple as need>talent, but merely a combination of both

This. A lot of people thought Knight would go top 5. I thought he was a steal at 8 at the time.

^ Many mocks hid him going #3 to Utah, who instead picked Kanter. I was ecstatic when Knight fell to us.

I saw him as a SF coming out of college, but the SF position has gotten so small, the 6-8, 6-9 guys who used to be prototypical are now to big to stay with their man on the perimeter. After seeing Smith have trouble playing SF this year, I no longer think Mitchell could do it.

I could see him develop into like a Jordan Hill/Udonis Haslem type utilty PF though.

I'm curious to see if he's still got that 3pt shot, because he could actually be that perfect 3&D PF to play next to Drummond if he could make the 3 consistently. Even if he could just make the midrange/long 2 consistently, if he provided consistent defense and shotblocking to go with it, that's all we need out of that position, in my opinion.

Knight fell because other teams didn't see what the hype led them. Based on his college play, he wasn't a very good prospect--a middling, high volume player and teams were asking themselves, 'he can't get to the hole that well and can't pass that well againt NCAA comp, so why do we take him with a top-10 pick'? That's not to say he wasn't still a decent choice when we got him, but the FO doesn't get a free pass because some mock drafters still had Knight in the top 5.

Also, Kawhi was in most discussions as a top-5 pick, but the worry was he didn't have any stand out skills and would never be a star. And Klay Thompson was a surprise that high, if I remember right--he was taken 5-8 picks sooner than expected because he was so one-dimensional.

I can't see Tony Mitchell as anything more than a couple highlight dunks in garbage minutes.

We'll know more when we see how much he's worked this offseason. Perhaps he won't work out - odds are that'll be the case. But you have to be a bit blind not to see the big time potential in this kid. He's a great/superior athlete at PF.

Mitchell needs to play PF if he's ever going to evolve into a rotational NBA player.

Tony Mitchell will be the 3rd big when Josh Smith leaves. He's going to be good.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!
