Celtics may trade Rondo if they miss Love. Can we get him?

Post#1 » by dan2314 » Tue Jun 24, 2014 1:35 am

As long as we are not playing Josh Smith at SF, which we shouldn't be anyway, and have two respectable jump-shooters on the wings, Rondo is exactly the type of Point Guard i want on this team. (Which is why i am so keen on trying hard to get back into the draft for Marcus Smart, who starts off with a lot of the similar attributes that makes rondo who he is.)

Now, I know you can't really trust much at this time of the year, but reports began to surface yesterday that Boston would likely start a full rebuild by trading everyone, particularly Rondo+Green if they could not get Kevin Love. What could we give up to try and get him?

Celtics would probably start with Greg Monroe, but i really want to keep Drummond and Moose together and build around that. Next years 1st round pick would be included no doubt, and we'd have to take on some of their bad contracts in Bass, Wallace and Bogans, maybe we can throw them Brandon Jennings too? Who else has some kind of value for us? I doubt they want Josh Smith if they're going for rebuilding few years. The only real valuable pieces are our cap space, Singler, and our core pieces (Dre, Moose, KCP).

Singler, Jennings, and 2015 1st round pick for
Rondo, Bass, and Wallace?

Monroe is a RFA and wouldn't want to sign with a rebuilding Boston. And outside of Moose as a centerpiece we just don't have the talent to get it done.

If Rondo is dealt, I expect Sacramento to make a hard play for him - dangling McLemore, Thomas and 2014 or future firsts.

Best we could probably offer would be KCP, Singler, Jennings and 2015 first or something like that and take on some bad contracts along with Rondo I guess.

Monroe and another asset should get it done if Ainge really decides to move him. But he will probably want to test FA after next season and that's not really a gamble worth taking. The only reason he would stay is because of Smith.

If we can get someone who can set the tone defensively, then the rest will take care of itself.

I'm sure SVG got a first hand demonstration of how hard Rondo plays when he ran down Jason Williams, sacrificed his body by diving to the floor and took the ball away from him

Best we could do:

Rondo / Green / Wallace

For

KCP / '15 1st / Jennings / Mitchell / Datome / Bynum (exp) / Jerebko (exp)

That allows the Celtics to complete clear the deck in summer '15 and gives them two positive young assets in KCP & '15 1st. We'd need to get a 2 guard (Meeks on the room exp could be nice) but we'd likely be a sure playoff team with:

Rondo/Siva
FA/Singler
Green/Wallace
Monroe/Smith
Drummond/(Monroe)/Harrellson

No thanks. He's best attacking the rim and distributing. With Drummond down low, and Smith playing close to the basket (in the scenario that we deal Monroe for Rondo), there just wouldn't be enough room. On top of the fact that we need shooters, and he's the exact opposite of that.

Beyond the fact that I don't like the fit, Monroe would have to sign an offer sheet with Boston, and I don't anticipate him doing so if Rondo is on the way out.

Trading Monroe doesn't force SVG to start Smith necessarily. Like he said when he got hired, once guys are signed, he plays them wherever they fit best and not based on salary/contract size.

So if Rondo/Drummond/Smith didn't have enough shooting, we could just get a stretch 4 to start up front and bring Smith off the bench.

I think Monroe for Rondo makes a ton of sense for both teams, but we'd have to get Monroe to agree to go from one rebuilding team with talent (Pistons), to another rebuilding team with no talent (Celtics), which might be difficult.

Though maybe a 3 way trade could be worked, where Monroe goes to the team of his choosing, that team sends Boston what they want for Rondo, and we get Rondo.

They'd want Monroe, but i'm not sure he'd want to go there.
I like Rondo a lot, but it's hard to make a deal that works for both teams... :S

If you're the Pistons and you can negotiate a deal for Rondo without including Drummond, you take it and run. Would instantly make us a playoff team and attract future FAs.

Hell if this happened early on in the FA piece and we cleared enough cap maybe even Melo would look at his buddies Rondo and Smith and consider signing here (pipe dream).

i think when we hired SVG, the idea of Rondo on this team died. SVG is building around Dre, teaming up your franchise center with a PG that struggles shooting is not the road we need to go down.

*Jennings is a perceived better shooter than what his stats say.

It's a pipe dream but I don't think it's THAT unrealistic. Rondo / Smith / Melo all go back to Oak Hill. Rondo & Smith have openly talked about wanting to play together and Melo was recruiting Rondo to the Knicks as late as last year. If we were somehow able to land Rondo on draft night (or shortly thereafter) and hit the summer with Drummond/Rondo/Smith + $20+ mil of cap room (have to renounce Monroe) + SVG as a recruiter we could present ourselves as a very attractive Melo destination.

If N.O. wants Monroe, I could see them parting with Evans in the deal, if they don't want two non-shooters in their lineup.

Maybe Boston would take Evans for Rondo.

DET gets Rondo

N.O. gets Monroe

BOS gets Evans

I think it would all work in terms of matching salaries. By trading Evans, N.O. clears enough room to give Monroe a max deal. We have enough caproom to absorb Rondo's deal outright. And Evans and Rondo make the same amount, so Bostons would be taking back the same exact salary.

Heck they might even prefer Evans for 3yr, 11 mil/yr over Monroe at 4 yr, 14-15 mil/yr.

And the reason they couldn't just trade Rondo for Evans directly without needing us involved, is because N.O. just gave up a ton for Holiday and doesn't need a PG. Plus if N.O. wants Monroe they'll need us to do a S&T.

It makes some sense for all teams.

I'm high on allergy meds, but what about a three team deal with Sacramento? Basically, if there's any credibility to the rumor of Landry / Thompson / #8 for Josh Smith …

SAC TRADES: Landry, Thompson, #8
SAC GETS: Smith
WHY: Per rumor cited above.

BOS TRADES: Rondo
BOS GETS: #8, KCP, Jennings, Future DET 1st
WHY: Two firsts (including a lotto pick) and KCP isn't a bad return for Rondo if he might walk in a year. Jennings is there to match salaries and his deal isn't long enough to be a hinderance to a team launching into a full rebuild.

DET TRADES: Smith, Jennings, KCP, Future 1st
DET GETS: Rondo, Landry, Thompson
WHY: Drummond / Monroe / Rondo is a hell of a core to build around.

Too much? Too little? Too many antihistamines in my system?

Especially given last year a Celtic fan, dead serious and with no sense of irony, asked for Drummond, KCP, a future first round pick, AND a swap of expiring for Gerald Wallace....for Rondo, when he was still in the process of coming back from major injuries.

There is no limit to the homerism on this site, so nobody can be assumed joking, sadly.

Whoever trades for Rondo is gonna get raped. We don't have the willing assets. That Sac deal mentioned above makes sense.
