BizGilwalker's Mock 2014 1st Round UPDATED 6/23/14

Post#1 » by HornetJail » Wed Jun 4, 2014 11:24 pm

6/23/14 mock draft on post #14.

Old mock (6/4/14):
Spoiler:
Biz Gilwalker wrote:[1] Image
ANDREW WIGGINS - SF
Wiggins appears to be a generational talent who has other-worldly potential. Cleveland has had a gaping hole at the small forward position for years, so this seems like a pretty easy decision for the incredibly lucky Cavaliers.

[2] Image
JOEL EMBIID - C
Milwaukee will have to figure out what to do with Larry Sanders sooner rather than later, but Embiid is a franchise changing big man. Having been compared to Al Jefferson, and even Tim Duncan, Larry Sanders should not impact this pick at all.

[3] Image
JABARI PARKER - SF/PF
Another franchise-altering talent, Jabari Parker seems to the be the best fit for Philadelphia. Philly will enjoy his offensive abilities from day one and will hope he is a reincarnation of Paul Pierce or Carmelo Anthony.

[4] Image
DANTE EXUM - PG/SG
The dynamic Aussie combo guard has a little uncertainty around him, but it's a chance Orlando has to take to complete a very scary backcourt that will be deadly for the better part of a decade. Pairing Oladipo and the second-coming of Penny Hardaway would be a dream come true for the Magic.

[5] Image
JULIUS RANDLE - PF
Utah's got a two top five picks in the frontcourt already, but that should not stop them from taking one of the two remaining power forwards. Randle is a very good all-around PF who is reminiscent of Chris Webber. Randle and Favors will make an excellent frontcourt from day one.

TRADE #1: Boston trades #6, Gerald Wallace to Philadelphia for #10

[6] Image
NOAH VONLEH - PF
The last of the elite six players in this draft, Noah Vonleh has fantastic two-way potential and could become an all-around terror given the time. Philadelphia makes this trade and eats the final two years of Wallace's contract to come out of the draft with Jabari Parker and Noah Vonleh to add to their young core of MCW and Noel.

TRADE #2: LAL trades #7, Steve Nash to Orlando for #12, Jameer Nelson

[7] Image
DOUG MCDERMOTT - SF
Orlando eats Nash's contract for a year and moves up five positions in the draft to select a fantastic and incredibly skiller scorer at the SF position. Orlando rolls into next season with a young and talented starting five of Vucevic, Harris, McDermott, Oladipo, and Exum.

TRADE #3: Sacramento trades #8, Jason Thompson, Travis Outlaw to Atlanta for Paul Millsap, who agrees to an extension. Sacramento gets their win-now player next to Demarcus Cousins.

[8] Image
ZACH LAVINE - SG/PG
Atlanta attempts a mini-rebuild around Al Horford and Jeff Teague. Keeping their own 15th pick, they swing a trade for a super athletic two-guard with wild potential to place next to Teague.

[9] Image
NIK STAUSKAS - SG/SF
Charlotte's biggest problem last season was outside shooting. Kemba, MKG, and Jefferson are all at their best in the paint. Meet Nik Stauskas, the best pure shooter in the draft. Barring a huge trade or signing, Charlotte could start the less-flawed version of Kevin Martin from day one and the Hornets will feel the difference right away.

[10] Image
AARON GORDON - PF
Boston moved down four spots in the draft to dump Wallace's restrictive contract, but they also expected their man to still be here at #10. The Celtics reportedly LOVE Aaron Gordon and the 18-year-old dunking maestro could make an interesting trio with Sullinger and Rondo.

[11] Image
GARY HARRIS - SG
Denver will like Harris's fit next to Lawson. A well-rounded two-guard, he can shoot the three, defend, and drive to the basket. Denver is a playoff-caliber team when healthy, and Harris will help them get back there.

[12] Image
MARCUS SMART - SG/PG
The Lakers dumped Nash's contract to move to this spot. A very strong guard with point guard abilities, LA can definitely start him next to Kobe from day one. Kobe and Smart can split ball-handling duties as Smart learns the game, and Smart can focus on scoring, defending, and improving his jumper as Kobe grooms his potential replacement.

[13] Image
RODNEY HOOD - SF
It's hard to pinpoint exactly what Minnesota needs right now, other than a defensive center, which is completely absent in this draft. But Hood can bring plenty of scoring and shooting to this Minnesota team. He won't be great, but he'll be a decent to solid defender at the next level and that's welcome on the Wolves, where defense is a struggle, particularly in the frontcourt.

[14] Image
TJ WARREN - SF/PF
Phoenix gains a very talented scorer in Warren. He's been transforming into a wing in terms of his game, but still maintains the body of a combo forward. nbadraft.net's comparison of Caron Butler is spot-on- he's a strong wing player with multiple moves, and can slide over and play the role of a small-ball PF.

TRADE 4: Atlanta trades #15, Travis Outlaw for #24, Cody Zeller, Jeff Taylor

[15] Image
JAMES YOUNG - SG/SF
The Hornets overpay just a tad in this deal, but get another scorer on the wings in hopes that James Young is a long-term sixth man behind Nik Stauskas and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Young officially makes Gerald Henderson expendable, as he appears to be a very similar player, with better range and more potential on both ends.

[16] Image
DARIO SARIC - SF
In pursuit of a top free agent like Carmelo Anthony, the Bulls select the versatile Croatian and stash him for a year until he's ready to come over. Patience could pay off for the Bulls if Saric becomes a Hedo Turkoglu-esque talent.

[17] Image
SHABAZZ NAPIER - PG
Staying pretty close to his hometown, Napier is also the perfect fit for this Celtics team. He can learn under Rajon Rondo if he's still in Boston, and can take over once Rondo eventually departs. Napier is everything you want out of a point guard- he scores, he passes, and most of all, makes the big play when he needs to. UCONN fans and Celtics fans alike will be thrilled with this pick.

TRADE 5: Phoenix trades #18, #27, Frye to Milwaukee for Sanders and #36
Phoenix may be one of the few teams to trade for Sanders, but Sanders can fill a need, as an athletic defensive stud at the center position.

[18] Image
GLENN ROBINSON III - SF
After Milwaukee picked Embiid at #2, that reduced Milwaukee's positions of need from five positions to four. They pick the best non-center available after trading Sanders, and pick an excellent, athletic scorer. He seems like the full package. A less ball-hogging version of Corey Maggette with some defensive ability is a value pick at #18.

[19] Image
ADREIAN PAYNE - PF
With Carlos Boozer clearly on the way out, and Taj Gibson taking over the starting role, Payne can step right in and be an impressive backup from day one. His physicality and multidimensional offensive game makes him a perfect Chicago Bull.

[20] Image
JERAMI GRANT - SF
Grant is raw, and won't be a factor in his rookie season, but his athleticism and tremendous upside (particularly defensively) make him a prime target for the Toronto Raptors, especially if Derozan can continue progressing in his three-point shot.

[21] Image
KYLE ANDERSON - SF
Anderson is the next Lamar Odom, minus the drugs. He'll be a point forward from day one, and while he may not play with the starting unit, the Thunder's bench unit needs an overhaul offensively, and a game plan revolving around Kyle Anderson's scoring and passing abilities certainly can't be worse than this season's game plan for the bench.

[22] Image
TYLER ENNIS - PG
Memphis needs a solid scorer on the bench and in backcourt. Ennis covers both for Memphis and should be a good value pick. He can run the second unit, and could even briefly play alongside Conley. A scoring small forward would have been nice here, but there simply wasn't a good enough one available to warrant passing on Ennis.

[23] Image
CLEANTHONY EARLY - SF
Now that Utah has really bolstered the frontcourt, the wings need work. Enter Cleanthony Early, an explosive small forward. He can play the 4, but he's primarily a three, and a nice contrast to Gordon Hayward on the wings.

[24] Image
CJ WILCOX - SG
An NBA-ready prospect with nice range on his jumper, Wilcox will be traded to Atlanta because of the trade with Charlotte. His shooting stroke is a big plus for Atlanta, as he will stretch the floor very well for Horford.

[25] Image
JUSUF NURKIC - C
Houston could choose to stash this pick until next year should they decide to do so, to conserve cap space, but it's a foregone conclusion that Asik's time in Houston is gone. Houston needs a backup for Dwight Howard, and the enormous Bosnian center with some two-way potential should be up for the task.

[26] Image
MITCH MCGARY - C/PF
McGary is another big man Miami can throw at guys like Roy Hibbert to attempt to slow him down. A great hustle player, he'll do exactly what Miami wants him to do. Mock drafts have him deep in the second round, but he's easily a late 1st round talent. He's ready to play now, and has room to grow.

[27] Image
THANASIS ANTETOKOUNMPO - SF/SG
First and foremost, Thanasis is a great defender even if his offense is a bit of a mess. Second, his brother already plays for Milwaukee and there is no doubt that playing for the same team will help both of them develop. He doesn't have the endless ceiling Giannis has, but his defensive game could prove to be special similar to Thabo Sefolosha.

[28] Image
PJ HAIRSTON - SG/SF
The Clippers are pretty good at point guard, center, and power forward. The wings are a bit shaky though. Hairston is borderline lottery talent even in this draft- great shooter, and athletic finisher, but off-court issues have plagued him at UNC. Doc Rivers should set him straight.

[29] Image
CLINT CAPELA - PF/C
Capela is most certainly a project, who possesses great athleticism for a big man and could eventually become an excellent defensive player for the Thunder. A lot of his problems can be fixed with good coaching, experience, and player development, but he's got the tools to be a pretty good player.

[30] Image
SEMAJ CHRISTON - PG
A very active, athletic point guard, Christon seems like he could step in right away if Patrick Mills left in free agency this summer as San Antonio's backup PG. He's still developing as a playmaker, but seems like a talented enough player to be able to adjust. With Popovich coaching, anything is possible.

Notable 2nd rounders:
Elfriid Payton
Kristaps Porzingas
James McAdoo
Jordan Clarkson
Jahii Carson
Isaiah Austin
Spencer Dinwiddie
Jarnell Stokes
KJ McDaniels

I'd throw a party if the 76ers were able to trade up and select Noah Vonleh at #6. I don't see Boston doing that kind of trade with the 76ers though. I really don't see Aaron Gordon lasting until #10, for the 76ers to flip to Boston.

The Lakers and Kupchak, know how to draft, so they aren't taking Doug McDermott.

Marcus Smart lasting until #12 is a joke. I'll stop reading now. :D

They drafted him for the trade with Orlando, in which LA gets Smart, who I am not at all a fan of. McDermott would be a great pickup for Orlando. I'd love him on my team too.

That's cool. But you might have labeled it as "What would I do" mock draft. Just because you're not a fan doesn't mean the guy is going 12th. But hey, it's your mock.

Yikes. If Orlando moved up I certainly hope it wouldn't be for McDermott lol.

Nice mock though, looks like it took some time to make up.

No way Smart gets past the Nuggets at #11, doubt he gets there anyway.

I'll be doing another mock draft closer to the draft, but it appears that I'm probably scrapping that ORL/LAL deal and Marcus Smart will in fact go much higher than he deserves to.

Lakers would use the stretch provision, before moving back 5 spots to swap Nash for Meer. Come on Biz!

No way in holy hell does Smart fall the way to 12.
"That's why the last two years weren't guaranteed," Walsh said. "Either way, he knew it could have happened either way."

Gordon playing with Rondo and Sullinger would be terrible, where would the shooting be if Gordon has to play 3?

BizGilwalker's Mock 2014 1st Round - Including Trades - UPDA

Post#14 » by HornetJail » Mon Jun 23, 2014 8:28 pm

1. Image
ANDREW WIGGINS - SF/SG
I see no reason for the Cavs not to pick Wiggins here. In the wake of Embiid's foot surgery, with Parker possibly playing the 4 in the NBA, and with Kyrie and Waiters playing Exum's position, it's pretty clear who the number 1 pick is. This team gets much more deadly, and possibly catches the eye of a certain star. Comparison: Paul George

2. Image
JABARI PARKER - SF/PF
Parker or Exum could have gone here. I chose Parker since he's the safer pick, and it's pretty clear that the Bucks need major help and can't afford to whiff on a pick like this. Comparison: Bigger Paul Pierce

3. Image
DANTE EXUM - PG/SG
It's not a secret that Philly's going for a youth movement. The 18-year-old Aussie is well-hyped as a dynamic combo guard, and has a chance to be really special. Philly is likely to be bad for another couple years, so they can wait on Exum to learn the game at the NBA level, something he won't have much of a problem doing. Comparison: Penny Hardaway

4. Image
NOAH VONLEH - PF
Vonleh is the perfect fit with Vucevic in the frontcourt. A long, athletic, coordinated big man capable of playing both ends very well, he excels on defense, something Orlando could struggle with, having Vucevic and Harris as two members of the starting frontcourt. Comparison: Defensive Chris Bosh

5. Image
JULIUS RANDLE - PF
Utah already has Favors and Kanter, but it's clear they could really benefit from Julius Randle. A do-it-all big man, he could truly excel next to Derrick Favors from day one and be a near-double-double contributor as a rookie. Utah's wing troubles will be dealt with fairly soon. Comparison: Chris Webber

6. Image
JOEL EMBIID - C
Joel Embiid's injury is scary, no doubt, and as a result, he's the last of the "top 6" to come off the board. A transcendental talent, Embiid is worth the risk to a team that may not be looking to rebuild conventionally. Comparison: level-headed Demarcus Cousins

TRADE 1: Utah trades Trey Burke, Enes Kanter, Alec Burks to LAL for #7, Steve Nash
Utah receives a second lottery pick while getting rid of their frontcourt logjam, while LA receives young assets including a good center and a good point guard and gets to dump Nash's final year to go after more free agents.

7. Image
MARCUS SMART - PG/SG
Utah rolls into next season with a potentially deadly young quartet of Derrick Favors, Julius Randle, Marcus Smart, and Gordon Hayward. Smart may take some time to adjust, but the general consensus is that he'll be a really good pro (I don't see it but that's beside the point.) Comparison: ERIC GORDON

TRADE 2: Philly trades Michael Carter-Williams, Thaddeus Young to Sacramento for #8, Derrick Williams, Jason Terry, Jason Thompson
Philly sells high on MCW and gets a THIRD top 10 pick in this loaded draft. Sacramento receives a starting PF and a good young PG, while offloading a couple contracts.

8. Image
AARON GORDON - PF
Aaron Gordon, a high-energy power forward capable of playing both ends of the floor, finds himself in the perfect scenario to stand out. He may take a year or two to really start making an impact offensively, but Philly has that kind of time to wait on him, plus he'll be on the boards and on the highlight reels night in and night out. Comparison: Poor man's Blake Griffin

9. Image
DOUG MCDERMOTT - SF/SG
Forget positions for a minute- MKG and McDermott are a match made in heaven on the wings. Kemba Walker certainly needs a second scorer on the perimeter, and Al Jefferson needs the floor spread a bit to be at peak production. Why not take the best pure shooter in the draft? Comparison: Wally Szczerbiak

10. Image
RODNEY HOOD - SF
The prospect of Philly starting four rookies- Noel, Exum, Gordon, and Hood- is simply mind-numbing, but these guys are all high-potential players that all have a chance at stardom. Hood spaces the floor very well and has the tools to be an excellent two-way threat if we works hard at it. Comparison: Rudy Gay

11. Image
NIK STAUSKAS - SG
Nik seems like the right pick for Denver. A highly consistent three-point threat, he could provide some stability to a Denver team that always seems to be all over the place. Comparison: Kevin Martin

TRADE 3: Three way deal: ORL/CHI/CHA
Orlando trades #12, 2015 2nd, 2016 2nd for Cody Zeller, Tony Snell, #19, #24
Chicago trades #16, #19, Tony Snell, Mike Dunleavy, for #12, #45, 2015 2nd [CHA], 2015 2nd [ORL], 2016 2nd [ORL]
Charlotte trades #24, #45, 2015 2nd, Cody Zeller for #16, Mike Dunleavy

Orlando moves back for significant incentive. Chicago dumps salary for a Melo signing, getting a lotto pick and tons of 2nd rounders in the process. Meanwhile Charlotte moves up 8 spots in the draft from 24 to 16 while taking a good fit in Dunleavy.

12. Image
DARIO SARIC - SF
After amnestying Boozer and letting Saric play overseas, Chicago is left with just over $42M in Rose, Noah, Gibson, Butler, and cap holds, and pretty close to maximum cap space for Carmelo Anthony. Saric would be a solid weapon between Rose and Melo for several years if Chicago is willing to wait on him. Comparison: Hedo Turkoglu

13. Image
GARY HARRIS - SG/PG
Harris seems to be a solid fit next to Rubio. It's really impossible to pick for Minnesota without know what happens without Kevin Love, but it appears that Minny will be sticking with Ricky Rubio, so why not find him a running mate in the backcourt that can score and defend? Comparison: Avery Bradley with a better jumper

14. Image
TJ Warren - SF
Phoenix has a glut of excellent guards, and a number of decent power forwards, and Gerald Green is a year away from being an UFA. Enter TJ Warren- a do-it-all forward for the Suns to slot at the SF for the future. He'll be a steal if he works on his jumper. Comparison: Caron Butler

TRADE 4: Phoenix trades #18, #27, and Alex Len to Atlanta for #15, #43, and the right to swap 2015 1sts with ATL/BRK (or two 2015 2nds).
PHX has expressed interest in just getting a future pick for #27, so here it is. Atlanta owns the rights to swap picks with Brooklyn, and now Phoenix gets the highest between BRK, ATL, and PHX. Atlanta gets two 1sts for the price of 1 plus they get Len.

15. Image
ELFRIID PAYTON - PG
Phoenix has so many prospects it's hard to decide where to draft. It almost seems inevitable that one of Dragic or Bledsoe is going to be packaged in a huge deal, so Phoenix picks up a high potential point guard that can dish the rock. Could this pick make up for the Rondo trade years ago? Comparison: Poor man's Rajon Rondo

16. Image
ZACH LAVINE - SG/PG
Charlotte is owed this pick from TRADE 3. The hyper-athletic LaVine seems like the perfect project for Charlotte. He may be quite raw, but he'll be able to shoot and score from day one (a major need for the Hornets' wings) and has boundless potential. It's a risk but Charlotte should take it, because the payoff could be incredible. Comparison: guard version of Gerald Green

17. Image
SHABAZZ NAPIER - PG
Rondo is eventually leaving Boston. That has been clear for a while now and Avery Bradley is obviously not a PG. Boston is in need of a new PGOTF and who's better than the homegrown Shabazz Napier? A fan favorite and a true competitor from day one, he's got tons of potential. Comparison: Kemba Walker

18. Image
KYLE ANDERSON - SF
ATL is owed this pick from TRADE 4. The Hawks are pretty shallow on the wings and Kyle Anderson is the perfect guy to make that change. He follows the Hawks' trend of ball movement and outside shooting, so this seems like a pretty obvious choice. What he lacks in foot speed, he makes up for it in brains, appealing to Budenholzer's Popovich-esque game plan. Comparison: Boris Diaw

19. Image
TYLER ENNIS - PG
Orlando has been dodging replacing Jameer Nelson for what seems like forever. They can't do this much longer with Tyler Ennis glaring them in the fact. Ennis has the potential to be better than Nelson ever was, as a good 3&D prospect at the point. Not a bad playmaker either. Comparison: Mike Conley

20. Image
Cleanthony Early - SF/PF
Early is probably coming off the bench for a few years, but Toronto, being as shallow as they are at SF particularly defensively (Fields and Novak don't exactly strike fear into the hearts of Lebron and Durant), Early seems like a good investment. Comparison: defensive Thaddeus Young

21. Image
JAMES YOUNG - SG/SF
Leave it to OKC to nab the steal of the draft. The all-around wing really doesn't have any standout strengths, but could be used as a Swiss Army knife as he's merely solid at everything, making OKC forget about Sefolosha very, very quickly. He really could blossom into a very good player, and I'd trust OKC to make it happen. Comparison: Wesley Matthews

22. Image
JERAMI GRANT - SF
A highly athletic wing, Grant still has a lot to work on, particularly on offense, but his defensive abilities are really good already, and with his tools, maybe he even becomes elite there. The casual fan can see Memphis needs to upgrade Prince as soon as they can, and Grant could supplant Prince as soon as next season. Comparison: poor man's Gerald Wallace

23. Image
PJ HAIRSTON - SG/SF
Utah's now got a great young quartet of Favors/Randle/Hayward/Smart and PJ Hairston is scorer the Jazz need to tie it all together. Hairston would likely be a late lottery pick if it weren't for his off-court issues. Comparison: JR Smith

24. Image
JORDAN CLARKSON - SG/PG
Orlando uses the pick they got from the earlier three-team trade to select a backup combo guard who has a high ceiling if developed correctly. I doubt Clarkson is a starting caliber floor general, but he'll be a fantastic second unit piece in a few years. Comparison: poor man's Tyreke Evans

TRADE 5: Houston trades #25, Donatas Motiejunas, Isaiah Canaan to Boston for 2015 1st [LAC], Keith Bogans
Houston clears cap space for a Lebron or Melo signing and gets a 2015 1st and an UNG deal. The Celtics get the pick in the better draft and take...

GLENN ROBINSON III - SF
Robinson is muli-skilled, and on a team like Boston, that has to be welcome. Robinson projects to be a classic 3&D guy, but with added scoring ability inside as well. Comparison: poor man's Caron Butler

26. Image
JUSUF NURKIC - C
Nurkic is all over the place in mock drafts, and Miami's future is anything but certain as well, but there's one thing that is for sure: Nurkic is one of the few good centers in this draft and Miami has needed a good center for a long time. Comparison: Nikola Pekovic

27. Image
CJ WILCOX - SG
More wing shooting for Atlanta with the Wilcox pick (coming from the Phoenix trade), but he is also a capable defender and passer. This will be a welcome addition for the Hawks. Comparison: Anthony Morrow

28. Image
ADREIAN PAYNE - PF
Yes, even I'm surprised to see him this low. The versatile big man should be viewed as a gift to LA, and one they didn't see coming. The Clips have desperately needed quality depth behind Blake Griffin, and here it is, gift-wrapped. Comparison: Patrick Patterson

TRADE 6: New York trades Iman Shumpert and a future 2nd to OKC for #29
New York gets the 1st they wanted. OKC gets a SG they've been linked to before.

29. Image
SEMAJ CHRISTON - PG
Semaj will probably be a better PG than Felton pretty soon, maybe by the end of his rookie season. I assume the Knicks are looking for PG help by dangling Shumpert. Christon could blossom into a starter someday. Comparison: poor man's Jeff Teague

30. Image
THANASIS ANTETOKOUNMPO - SF/SG
The thought of Popovich getting hold of an Antetokounmpo should probably scare the rest of the league. Thanasis is already a very tenacious defender. He may be a bit of a wreck offensively right now, but the tools are there and if anyone can make it happen, Popovich will be the guy to bring this guy to fame. Comparison: Rich man's Thabo Sefolosha
investigate Adam Silver

LOL at us trading Carter-Williams. I can't see us giving him up.

No thanks on that Jazz trade. Ugh. Three former lotto picks who are all contributors for Marcus Smart? Not happening.
