time to start up the age old argument as to whether participating in this is a good or bad idea health-wise

Bautista outplays his contract by more than $70 million over the next four seasons (2013-2016).

How was he after the derby last year? I know the first time he didnt have many HR's after. Guess this means EE is going to be in it too.
He better win it this year too.

Bautista,Cespedes, Trout, Cabrera,Ortiz or Cruz
. If Edwin gets in he's also a strong possibilty. They always pick someone you don't even want to see hitting though.

He got hurt and barely played the rest of the season (which some blamed on the HR derby even though you can clearly get hurt without participating in a HR derby as he just showed yesterday).

I wouldn't have let him participate in it, but whatever. The Jays seem to not be cautious with these sorts of things. It felt like half the 25-man roster was allowed to play in the WBC last season and now Bautista in the HR derby despite battling an injury. We just have to hope everything works out and he remains healthy and productive in the 2nd half. The derby probably isn't the reason for his injuries. I'm not sure about what it does to a hitter's swing as I haven't really paid attention to any of the research done (if any).

Yeah, I don't see how it could possibly have any effect. Guys try to mash every day in BP.
The Derby is always incredibly boring, but if Edwin and Jose are participating I will fully admit to being really excited.

they were cautious with him last season when they didn't let him participate in the derby, despite him wanting to. and because they allowed 6 players to represent their respective countries in the only real international tourney there is i don't think is any indication they don't value or aren't cautious with the health of their players. the brewers sent 13 players to the wbc. a bunch of teams allowed their best players to play in it too

Re: Bautista named captain for AL in HR Derby
I think maybe a factor is that because the Jays are based in Canada, it is very much in the team's interest to give our players as much media visibility as possible.
My concern isn't so much injury, but it just seems that the players lose focus on successful hitting strategies when they come back. Bau seemed to forget how to take a walk when he got back after the first year. Seitzer has put a lot of emphasis on NOT over-swinging this year, and I don't want that to get lost.

Bautista had a ridiculous 20.8 BB% in the 2nd half of 2011, so that wasn't really an issue. He just stopped hitting like prime Barry Bonds (which should have been expected).

Don't see how EE isn't chosen. He's leading the majors right now.
Can't wait for the guy who has 5 homers to get selected.

Man if they Jays have their 3 and 4 hitters both in the derby in a year where they look like they might contend for real. If something went wrong it would be a media nightmare lol.
I hope they are both in it tbh.

Hmm, it must have been another season I was thinking of. Where do you go for such stats?
So much for enhancing the Jays' media profile. The ESPN story quotes Tulo extensively, and completely ignores Joeybats. Also, Tulo specifically addresses my concern about rhythm.
[Tulowitzki] is listening -- and doesn't want to hear excuses about how the derby might mess up a batter's stroke.
"You take a look during (batting practice), sometimes I'll go out there and try to hit a home run on every single pitch," Tulowitzki said. "It's no different from being in the Home Run Derby.
"Those are my thoughts. I don't really want to entertain that thought, either. You get back on track. And if you're not doing good, you put some (work in the cage). It's not because of a Home Run Derby."

He only played 6 games after the HR derby in 2012. FanGraphs.

Unfortunate, but nobody really cares about the Jays in the US, so that makes some sense.

It's 3 weeks away. If he's still hurt by then, presumably he won't.

Absolutely. If i were the Jays- i would tell him to pass. He struggled afterwards for several games, and got injured shortly afterwards. Even Bautista admitted in the Summer of 2012 in an interview on the FAN 590 which i remember listening to, that the Derby had "Changed his swing for the worse".

Bautista played 6 games in the summer of 2012. Wasn't exactly much time for his swing to get worse considering he got hurt less than a week after the derby.

He mentioned that in the interview after he got hurt that the "Derby had changed his swing for the worse and something to the effect". It was on a pre-game show with Blue Jays apologist Mike Shillner as i call him. Something about how the Derby could have been a contributing factor in hurting his wrist, and changing his swing for the worse after the all-star break in the 6 games he played before ending up in the DL.
