He already seems to be too good for this level, just needs innings

AA is generally considered a big step, so I'd expect that they'd give him some time there just to ensure that they don't undo the gains. Would not surprise me in the slightest if he reaches AAA for a couple starts by the end of the year though, and enters next year as the heir presumptive.

And yeah, he has too much about him to trade as part of a package unless it's bringing back a #1 with years of control. High-end lefties don't grow on trees, and the young, cheap rotation/veteran, well-paid hitting thing is a great way to extend our window (and payroll).

We get on DJ Davis for his Ks, and rightly so, but from the sounds of it, he had a nice one tonight flashing multiple tools:

esse G-S ‏@jgoldstrass 11m
3. D.J. Davis threw out a man at the plate, created a run by himself (BB/SB/e-2/WP), and drove in the go-ahead run on an 0-2 pitch. Superb.

Also, a possibility for the future bullpen: Griffin Murphy with his 13th save at Lansing, a lefty who is almost untouchable at that level. Seems to have found his niche after failing as a starter

This time last year, Norris' command was less than desirable and he was basically at the verge being irrelevant. Now he is considered by most to be the best prospect in the system. People need to keep that in mind before they write Sanchez off. A little tweak here, a small advice there... from a different set of coaches may be all he needs to turn his career around.

I don't think anyone is giving up Sanchez. He's turning 22 July 1st and he's already in AAA ball. He's got a couple years to figure it out before he becomes a failed prospect. That said, his trends are not good: stable to increasing BB/9 and decreasing K/9 ratios. It still sounds like his mechanics need work; hopefully he's open to some changes and the control improves.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Conner 'Ballstein' Greene male model is moonlighting on the mound today for GCL Jays. 4 scoreless so far with just a hit and a walk.

Got through his first inning with just a single walk. It's evolution.

Brentz makes early Ricky Vaughn look like Greg Maddux. 3 walks and 2 wild pitches in 3 innings today.

And that's actually an improvement.

It's going to be a long road for him, but at least it should be fun.

Yeah, at least we made it out of his first inning this go around. Going back to last year, he never pitched more than 1 inning, so getting in there for 3 was a good step.

Fangraphs - Fringe Five
Daniel Norris, LHP, Toronto (Profile)
One could pretty reasonably dispute the notion that Norris is a fringe prospect. Indeed, the left-hander was drafted originally in the second round and appeared before the 2012 season on Baseball America’s top-100 list and has advanced through Toronto’s system with a celerity typical of more promising younger players. That said, he appeared on none of the relevant top-100 lists prior to this season — and, as a result, has perhaps received less of the attention of late that his recent achievement probably merits. As with Seth Mejias-Brean (above), Norris made his debut at Double-A last week after a promising half-season at High-A. Also like Mejias-Brean, Norris has produced startlingly proficient fielding-independent numbers so far, having recorded now a 19:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio after just two starts and 11.1 innings with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Norris was also part of the BA top 50 prospects debate today as well.

Norris and Pompey have formed a mutual admiration society - based on two brief but very impactful five minute meetings.

Sanchez's 3rd AAA start is now getting underway. Interesting matchup with him and Danny Salazar.

Edit: So far so good - 2 K's 10 of 12 pitches for strikes through 1

Same so-so outcome

4.1 IP, 1R 1ER, 3H, 4BB, 7K - so seven base runners and seven Ks in 4.1. Distressing: 87 pitches, 49 strikes.

Pompey's had a good couple of games. Slash line up to .317/.397/.472 with 12 doubles, 6 triples and 6 home runs. Also 28 stolen bases in 30 attempts. Mysteriously he's still in Dunedin.

All the two years away from being two years away makes sense now. He's starting in A-ball.
