Draft day!

Post#1 » by Scoot McGroot » Thu Jun 26, 2014 3:29 am

Use this for any related draft day musings. If there's a specific rumor that relates to us, feel free to start a new thread, with a title that reflects the rumor and the source (like "Pacers to acquire pick; per Woj").

Otherwise, I'm going to unsticky the 2013/14 random trade thread as that season will be essentially gone and we're operating in a new world!

I watched the NBATV mock draft last night and they had the bottom of the first round full of international players who won't sign here for years. If that's the best that could be done with the 27, we probably won't be missing anything much at least for now.

I read that Miami wants to trade up for Napier. I do too. I rate the odds of us getting a pick higher than 57 as very high although a second rounder may be a lot more affordable than a first. I expect Phoenix to be selling a first and Philly to be dumping seconds.

Unless Philly takes the 57 and a future 2nd or two from us, I don't see what we have or can afford to trade to get a 2nd, outside of just buying one if Simon fronts the cash. A 1st? I hate trading future 1sts, and other than that, I don't see anyone else we can afford to trade having value.

I honestly don't know how Riley expects to trade up for Napier (or Perkins since there was a rumor the Heat want him too) when their ONLY trading piece is Norris Cole.

As for us, I would be shocked if we somehow got a 1st rounder. Maybe we buy another 2nd rounder like we did from the Kings to get Orlando Johnson? But outside of that, I think we're stuck at #57.

Yeah we should trade to get Napier just to keep them from getting him.

Philly has 5 2nd round picks, I'd try to buy one of them there are some good players in the 2nd round every year and this is a very deep draft.

I expect them and Milwaukee who has 3 2nds and Minnesota who has 3 to be looking to swap 2 of them for a late 2nd. Phoenix may trade the #27 for 2 2nds from one of those teams.

Also I could see OKC dealing their #29 for a pair of 2nd from Philly or Milw.

Philly can't really use 5 seconds as other than camp fodder or Euro-Stashes. Phoenix has said they can't afford to sign 3 firsts. if you want to get into this draft by moving this year's whole into a future year, it shouldn't be that hard.

I was looking at Shamsports and it says that Roy has a 15% trade kicker. That's making him costing $17 million per if we trade him. I don't thing we'll be trading him unless someone is really wanting a shot blocker, or they have a lot of cap space.

Also, since his deal was signed in the new CBA, the Pacers would have to pay he entire trade bonus, not the receiving team. However, the trade kicker cannot cause Roy to receive higher than the maximum salary in any given year, so that would limit the kicker quite a bit.

Here's the low down on what has happened thus far with trades:

1. NYK and Dallas Mavericks

NYK Sends: Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton
NYK Receives: Jose Calderon, Wayne Ellington, Shane Larkin, Samuel Dalembert, #34, #51

Dallas Sends: Jose Calderon, Wayne Ellington, Shane Larkin, Samuel Dalembert, #34, #51
Dallas Receives: Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton

2. Houston Rockets & NO Pelicans

HOU Sends: Omer Asik
HOU Receives: 2015 NO 1st round pick

NO Sends: 2015 NO 1st round pick
NO Receives: Omer Asik

3. Denver Nuggets & Orlando Magic

ORL Sends: Aaron Afflao
ORL Receives: Evan Fournier, #56

DEN Sends: Evan Fournier, #56
DEN Receives: Aaron Affalo

There are some other trades brewing. I feel tonight is going to be a wild night. Hopefully the Pacers can move up the board with either of Milwaukee or Philly's extra picks.

Maybe even the first round? Phoenix has come out and said they wanted to get rid of their pick (#27) which was the pick we gave them in the Scola trade. Maybe they'll ship Plumlee back.....

Miles Plumlee made a great improvement with playing time, I thought the Pacers were wacked when they picked him but they must have seen something, too bad we didn't play him enough and gave up on him.

Ok so if Roy is traded we'd have to pay his trade kicker? Is that for both years? Does that count against our payroll/salary cap?

Don't believe it would count against the cap, just our cash flow. It would also be limited based on his personal maximum salary, so if it happens before the new league year starts on July 1, we wouldn't owe much of anything. After the league year starts? Well, the. The cap rises AND Roy's max would up to 30% of the cap. We'd owe money then.

Here's a list of all the players the various mock drafts on the internet had us taking:

Jonathan Wasserman (Bleacher Report): Lamar Patterson, SG, Pittsburgh
Sam Amico (Fox Sports Ohio): Nick Johnson, SG, Arizona
Alex Kennedy (Basketball Insiders): Jordan Bachynski, C, Arizona State
Gary Parrish (CBS Sports): Bryce Cotton, PG, Providence
Zach Harper (CBS Sports): Markel Brown, SG, Oklahoma State
Matt Moore (CBS Sports): Spencer Dinwiddie, SG, Colorado
Draft Express: Ioannis Papapetrou, SF, Olympiakos (Greece)
NBADraft.net: Alec Brown, C, Wisconsin-Green Bay

But honestly, if I had my pick, I'd go after Mike Moser. 4 year college player at Oregon and the Pacers brought him in for a workout earlier so there's obviously interest from the front office. Problem is, he might be gone before our selection. That being said, I think the most likely selection for us are guys like Russ Smith, Will Sheehey, or Keith Appling. Smart, 4 year players at top tier colleges.

You guys are killing it. Love it!

I'd think that drafting the 7 footer from UW-Milwaukee would be a big indicator as to whether we plan to increase Cope's role as well, as the kid is a pure stretch 5. Otherwise, if 57 makes the roster, I'll be ecstatic.

Also, as of 4:30, I haven't seen a single mention of any possible Pacers deal. All quiet, thus far. Though, I'd never expect Pritch to be completely quiet on any draft day.

With the ownership of all the 2nd round picks sitting with a very small number of teams I'd think it would be pretty easy to buy one. That would make the night a little more interesting anyway.

Sure. It's definitely possible they're willing to sell, but if they don't like the price offered, they could just draft a ton of foreign prospects at low cost and see which ones might eventually hit and trade them later.

Return to Indiana Pacers
