McRoberts is going to receive multiple multi-year deals. In my opinion it's wasteful to commit long-term dollars to have him start PF through midseason. And then when the youngins are ready you're stuck with him at reduced minutes at starter dollars for 2-3 additional years.

We won't lose much through half season with Zeller/Vonleh getting minutes instead of McRoberts. It's just not worth the upcharge. We have bigger weaknesses on the roster (than 1/2 season of PF) that demand allocation of resources.

Looking at Cody and Noah in that picture, got me thinking, our frontcourt just keeps getting better and better every year. It began with drafting Biz, trading for McRoberts, drafting Zeller, signing Big Al, and now drafting Noah.

It's funny - when I saw him in his suit last night after we drafted him I thought he kind of looked painfully thin, but then watching clips of him actually playing in his body has some really nice shape to it.

I agree with you about his lower body though, he has a really nice trunk which is GREAT.

Zeller never was thin or skinny, been had definition and bulk, but he play soft, so if you're going to base things off that picture of him alongside Vonleh, you're reaching (pun intended)

Vonleh is 18 years old. Zeller is also 3 years older.

I think a lot of you are going to be frustrated when he's dropping passes and missing the right play. He's going to need several yrs at least.

The guy averaged 9 rebounds per game in only 26.5 minutes playing in the Big 10. That skill alone with those measurables is good enough to get him the court probably. He had a 22.8 Player Efficiency Rating. He's really young and really highly productive at a high level of basketball.

He's only 6'9, not 6'11 like Bosh.

6-9.5 at the combine. He might still grow some more.

His wing span is longer and his standing reach is only 1 inch shorter than Bosh's. Vonleh vertical is also 4" better than Bosh.

His standing reach and wing span is as much as many 7 foot centers. Hell give me a 9' standing reach. That's more important than where his head is.

 basically all his measurables are better.

He's build stronger as an 18 year old than 30 year old man Bosh.

He's 248 lbs at 7% body fat. Bosh was 225 at 8% in his draft.

He shot a high % from 3 but how many 3pt shots did he even take? A slow release in the NBA can make a pretty stroke useless (see Jeff Taylor).

Enough to believe he can hit an open outside shot. I doubt anyone is going to be asking the guy to make contested shots in someones face.

He only shoots 70% free throws.

Only? It was 72% actually as an 18 year old 6-9.5, 250lb kid. How many PF's can't shoot that well now much less at 18. What's Tim Duncan shoot from the FT line? He's the greatest PF ever right? Might surprise you.

Few interesting comps

Standing reach

Vonleh 9'0"
Anthony Davis 9'0"
Blake Griffin 8'9"
Zeller 8'10"

Max Vertical

Vonleh 37"
Griffin 35.5"

He also had the 2nd biggest hands ever measured in the NBA, and lower body fat, especially for a 247lb guy. Just about as low body fat as Lebron's in his draft at the same age/weight.

Really young, really great measurable across the board, really productive in the Big 10. What am I missing here. Who did the haters want.

He should have gone #4 to Orlando if they weren't taking a PG.

my biggest concern with him, which i think the draftexpress scouting video really does a good job of highlighting, is his tunnel vision when he gets the ball in the post. there were lots of times he could have made the extra pass and saved him and his team a lot of strife, but he was too focused on executing his post move and getting off a shot. given the hornets' personnel and the offense that clifford wants to run, he'll have to work on that ASAP. now i don't know how much of that is tom crean's offense and the things vonleh was asked to do in the halfcourt offense, but enough showed up that it should demand attention. i do think it's fixable, though.

I'm so excited to see this kid play. Charlotte finally caught a break in the draft. So many of us (myself included) were talking about whether we wanted the Detroit pick this year or next, and I'm thinking we were handed the best possible situation for the Hornets. It's doubtful that next year the pick would be higher than nine, and even if we landed in the 4-8 range next year I doubt we would be able to get a better prospect than Vonleh. He might not make an immediate impact, but there's not much better value/fit we could ask for at 9.

Greg Smith in 2011. Houston Rockets player. Physically he's probably one if not the most impressive players in the draft. He's got to be one of the youngest, and he was highly productive in big time college hoops. I don't know what's not to like.

this pick shouldnt change what we do with mcroberts. jefferson and mcroberts should be the starters. let zeller, vonleh and biz battle it out for the remaining minutes. in a year from now, if one of those 3 bench bigs looks ready to start, we can trade mcroberts or use him for depth.

Totally agree. I see no rush in trying to start Zeller or Noah. Resigning McRoberts will be huge. He provided stability for us last season and was the guy who subbed out early to come back in to play with the bench to keep things moving.

I think this team is in a unique position to compete and build talent up at the same time. I think everyone, the fans and the team, just needs to be patient. Who knows, we might be able to trade a few of these young talent for a top notch star and be contenders for a title one day. That or keep gathering talent and just keep growing as a team and maybe compete sometime down the road.

Vonleh is very likely already a major upgrade to McRoberts rebounding and protecting the rim. I guess it really depends on what McRoberts is asking. Anything over 3-4 million and I'd let him walk. I don't think he's worth more.
