How would last year have gone if SVG was our coach?

Last year, we got Smith, got rid of Knight and got Jennings, and even though many of us were leary of the big three, we also thought that maybe it might turn out awesome. But coaching and team chemistry went to crap, and so did the season. SO a couple of questions:

1. How would we have done last year if SVG was our coach?

2. If you answered "playoffs", then do we really need to make a bunch of trades/free agent signings this year to make the playoffs?

Just curious what everyone thinks. Personally, I'm sure we would have been to the playoffs last year, although SVG might have convinced Dumars to NOT get Smith. I also think without any major acquisitions this year, we'll make the playoffs.

That being said, I'm sure we're in for some changes, just not sure if they will be big ones or not.

Probably 6 seed, We were battling with Charlotte over the 8th seed at the trade deadline and then we fired Cheeks and completely fell of the map. SVG would have put our guys in better positions to succeed.

yeah I think we would've had a similar year to Washington/Charlotte. It seems like the only difference between those teams and us is their players got good coaching and ours didn't. Talent-wise all 3 teams were pretty even.

We would have made the playoffs over for sure coaching was a big reason this team didnt suceed

#2 - Yes. Because lots of teams tanked for Wiggins et al last season, and other teams improved a helluva lot more with said picks and other teams got healthy - Rondo for one will be back all season, Rose will be back.

Who are we notibly better than right now to say "We only need to tweak"?

Miami (assume Big 3 come back), Indiana, Chicago, Toronto, Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington? At best you can say we're fighting for the last play-off spot with a healthy Boston, Cleveland (who finished ahead of us, landed top overall pick), Brooklyn, and Orlando who is probably ready to roll. Philly, Milwaukee and NYK are the only three teams you can absolutely say we're better than today.

It's early we got FA to sign. I think we go sexy as we can with at least one FA, we'll have to overpay but thats what we have to do. We can get Collison and Granger for our 13.5m I'm pretty sure. This and good coaching is pushing us up 10+ games-12gms. I think we can trade bynum for Delfeno, M Dunleavy, or M barnes if LAC gets pierce and we sign Collison. Collison is consistent, playing behind Chris Paul, a total journeyman for early in a career. Sounds similar to Billups in Minn. backing up Terrell Brandon. He will push Jennings to the bench when he's out of control, and is a good scrappy defender to go with KCP, and Siva. I would make him and best 3 available to similar cost are top FA . Both capable and veterans.

Good point on the East. Although Miami, Indiana and Chicago are on a tier above the others as the only realistic Finals teams. Toronto, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Washington, although all clearly better than us last year, I wouldn't consider out of range if SVG has the impact I think he will. Actually Brooklyn really needs to be in that group as well (and they get Lopez back). So those are 8 "East" playoff teams, with us, Boston and NYK knocking on the door. I think Orlando still has a lack of shooting and isn't really a playoff team yet.

Stan is a defensive-minded coach before anything else. The Pistons may not have the maturity to go along with their athleticism to play solid defense right away. 25 years is Detroit's average age of last season. Also, 27 years is the average age of a top ten defense, with Charlotte being the youngest at 25.5 years of age (ranked 5th). In fact, 27.58 is the average age of top defenses since 2002 (when illegal defense rules were abolished). It's not impossible, but it really depends on who's mentally able to compete for a full season.

That stated, Detroit probably would have been a losing team, maybe with a slightly better record, but it's hard to tell. Their offense would have been marginally better, but still porous on the other end. There isn't a magic switch at the age of 27 or anything, so I have some faith that SVG will coach one of the younger juggernauts of our era.
