I don't think it was a requirement Danny. It was just something people might find useful.

So it looks like I'm not on the list? Any reason why? What more am I supposed to do?
I was going to provide a few new metrics and evaluation methods, so I'm wondering if I should invest my time in getting those up and running now or not.

I'm sure it was just an oversight. You're obviously going to be an integral part of this project, you contribute an incredible amount to the community.

Now that's the difference between first and last place.

FWIW (probably not much...) I think that rico381 should be allowed to participate right from the get-go. He seems like a very solid poster from what I've seen, and being a Warriors fan, he wouldn't really have a chance to be biased towards that many players in the top 100.

I think if you joined realgm after the groundwork for the project was started on the 20th you should at least wait for the first 5 votes before getting voting rights. It's clearly someone who has just signed up to vote on this, so while that shouldn't necessarily be discouraged, you want to give them 5 votes to contribute and show they're legit IMO.

Yeah, totally makes sense, I hadn't taken notice of that idea, thought some of you guys generally discouraged him about participating in this thing because of how short he's been around.

across the court -- I am sorry, just an oversight. Fortunately there are a number of posters here that watch for careless mistakes like that and I was PM'd about it. There will be some mistakes counting votes most likely too; but they will be caught too.
Rico381 -- I added you. I didn't put in a time requirement and would love to get new active posters as long as you are comfortable staying with the project.
DannyNoonan1221 -- Dave Corzine in the top 100 . . . really?
AT THIS POINT THE LIST IS CLOSING FOR THE FIRST SLOT. I will have a thread up sometime today for the #1 GOAT at RealGM.

What about the voting process discussion, etc?

And John Starks at #97?
Just glanced over the list quickly, those were the two that jumped out and slapped me in the face. EDIT: Horry at #87.

I would like to participate.
Was very busy the last few months but now due to some unfortunate circumstances I now have a good deal of free time.

You two both joined after the deadline. I think, per the earlier suggestion, you should have to wait 5 votes before being allowed to participate, just to show you're legit about the project (and not just here to vote in Shaq or whoever now that it's started).

I respect the process and that's fine we will wait if those are the rules fair enough, but trust me when you review my posting history on this forum you'll probably come to the realization that i more than contribute in ways beyond being a homer on any one player.
Was busy with some conversion projects at work this week so I didn't really have an opportunity to find out on the deadline so to speak.

Also for the record I was aware of this project before the deadline but if I'm not mistake a deadline wasn't given until quite recently beforehand.
There was extensive discussion about whether or not we were to include the voting to everyone on this forum or keep it similar to last year where there was an original list of candidates with an additional player to be nominated with each vote.

If you are interested, feel free to ask to join here and participate in the discussion. You don't need to vote to have an impact and you will be added to the list for voting. Despite my best efforts, I would guess that the #1 spot will not be a particularly tight vote.

Re: RealGM NBA Top 100 LIST--participation and metathinking
In case anyone is interested in watching Bird and Magic in their primes, either to remind themselves about their games or to see them play for the first time, there are some full length playoff games from the 80s on Youtube. It's also a whole lot of fun to watch them play.
I'm going to be rewatching a bunch of games of a lot of greats to prepare for the project. Right now, I'm watching game 6 of the 1986 Finals, with a peak Bird and a 2nd year Hakeem Olajuwon:

Some notes from that game so far:
-the game was a lot more uptempo and both teams were running as much as possible...a lot of transition opportunities
-defense was a little more rudimentary...a lot more 1 on 1 defense than what we would usually see today, and players are getting deep post position and a lot of layups around the basket rather easily
-offense was a little more rudimentary too...a lot of bad shots, obviously less focus on the 3pt line, and a lot of sloppy play, specifically with regards to blown layups and TOs
-Bird was a savant in terms of passing the ball...he played off-ball throughout the game, but it's easy to see why he was able to rack up so many assists...he was killing the Rockets off those curl plays where he would hit McHale right on the hands in traffic and McHale would have an easy finish around the rim...and of course, you have Bird's great midrange game...it's easy to see his separation from a guy like Dirk...Bird has a very similar ability to shoot the ball and put pressure on the defense even without the ball in his hands, and he's a great scorer once he catches it in the midpost, but he has elite passing and vision that Dirk just never had, and that puts Bird on another level as a player...furthermore, Bird, at least in this game, was playing some really solid team defense, in terms of doubling, cleaning up the glass, and getting steals
-Hakeem in this game has a lot of trouble in terms of reading the defense and in the 1st quarter, commits a lot of TOs, leading to a lot of Celtics points...but then he shows you flashes of the insane amount of talent he has, by stripping McHale twice and getting easy transition dunks both times, followed by a 3rd consecutive steal leading to a layup by McCray, to quickly cut into what was once a big Celtics lead

Jason Kidd should move up your list if you factor in chutzpah.

I just want to say to everyone involved in the project . . . one day in . . . the level of analysis and discussion has been terrific. Even when I disagree (and I'm definitely in the minority on this one), the posts I disagree with have been worth reading and discussing.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!
