Ferry's from the Spurs school of GM'ing. Watch for him to sign some surprisingly cheap players who turn out to be better than we all thought... like Milsap last year. Lebron and Melo is a fantasy, but no harm putting yourself in a position to try and get some notable free agents.

Throwing away a 1st round draft pick to get rejected by Lebron or to pursue Greg Monroe would be idiotic. Long shots at best. But trading for James Harden so HOU gets under the salary cap so THEY can get rejected by Lebron....that actually makes more sense.

We're trading for a player under contract so that another team can pursue a top Free Agent.

Candidates:

Joakim Noah
James Harden
Klay Thompson
Blake Griffin

All of their teams have expressed interest in pursuing LBJ (or Carmelo).

Harden or Noah make the most sense.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking...

Mattya wrote:As a Wolves fan I think Love to Atlanta makes a lot of sense, but the question always is would he go there, and what would the team risk for Love without an extension.

It'd take Horford to even get you guys on the line, right?

I was doing the math, and mathematically, their is no way the Bulls, Rockets, or Warriors can swing any trade to get Carmelo and Lebron.

Cleveland, Philidephia, Miami, and Atlanta are the only teams that could still work out a few trades for both Lebron and Carmelo to team up.

I'm really starting to doubt Miami's ability to do this because i think Lebron sees that the Spurs embarrassed Spoelstra's coaching skills. Hawks have Budz and the Sixers have Brett Brown.

Other teams can't even get an interview with Lebron. The big 3 have opted out, and are going to try to add more talent with their cap. It'll probably work unfortunately.

So i was doing the math. If Ferry can trade away Millsap, Teague, and Carroll, the Hawks will be left with $39 million in cap.

Al Horford $12,000,000
Kyle Korver $6,253,521
Dennis Schroeder $1,690,680
John Jenkins $1,312,920
Pero Antic $1,250,000
Adreian Payne $1,617,840

If they can package Antic with Millsap and Jenkins with Teague, the cap would then go down to $41.8 million.

This could forge a line up of

Horford
Payne
Carmelo/Korver
Lebron
Schroeder

or

Horford
Carmelo/Payne
Lebron
Korver
Schroeder

with Budz as the coach.

I'd love to get one of Lebron or Melo but it's wishful thinking to say the least. We'll sign a plan B FA IMO and if we do get lebron then I'll personally pitch in for a Danny Ferry statue.

To get the cap for the Lebron and Melo, its possible. To the get the cap for one of the two, its pretty easy, just trade Millsap to the Lakers, or Bucks for Zaza, or Hornets for Neal or Blazers for Thomas Robinson. That is plan A, then plan B could always be Deng or Pau Gasol, Paul Pierce, Vince Carter, Monroe, Hayward, Gortat, Turner, Hawes, Ray Allen, Livingston, etc

Everybody is throwing Deng's name around. but how about short term deals, 15 million for Gasol, and 4 million for Ray Allen?

I won't. I would give up Bebe any day of the week for Monroe or Hayward.

Hayward isn't happening though Utah has already said they will match any offer he gets

ATLHawksfan21 wrote:Same here. I will happily lose lou and bebe for the addition of a starter.

It's not so much about Bebe. It's the value of the assets in the first place. Draft picks are like gold. Literally giving them away tells me that Ferry really didn't have some grand plan he was working. He really just is making it up as he goes along.

It's a terrifying feeling when you realize your leader has no real, tangible plan for the future.

lol. Overreact much? The reaction from some of you is ridiculous. Acting like this deal is the end of the world. Bebe's knees didn't start acting up until after he was drafted. Maybe this had something to do with it. You also learn much more about a player once you start working with them than you know during pre-draft scouting.

Let's see what type of position we are in after free agency before we start making grandiose statements like "It's a terrifying feeling when you realize your leader has no real, tangible plan for the future"

Honestly don't see us having the roster slots to conceivably add more than 1 - well, unless we dump more players. Can't say that I'd be terribly excited to sign Gasol and Allen after dumping, say, Antic, Jenkins, Muscala, and Schröder on top of dumping Lou and Bebe.

Assuming we strike out with the primary targets (Lebron, Parsons, etc), I could see mind offering a 1 yr/$15M deal to someone like Deng or Gasol. I'd wouldn't be happy about it and I'd guess it'd be declined, but I could see it. Outside of that, I can't think I'd be too on board with a short term deal. We still have $12M in expiring next off-season on top of the $5.5M in Lou. If we went for a short term deal, then we would have been better off just waiting.

Didn't Allen say he only wants to sign with whoever signs LeBron.

With Koonin on board I truly believe many things could happen. I believe he is going to change the way of thinkking in this franchise and nothing and nobody is out of reach.
An ambitious plan to strengthen the team is on schedule.
Why could not LBJ come here?

I believe we have the assets to make it happen.
With the signing of LBJ, plus a decent center (other than Horford, Muscala, Antic, Payne, whoever else is on the roster), we would have the best EC roster. Period.

Teague-Korver-Carroll-Millsap-Jenkins-Horford-LBJ-average defensive stopper-Muscala/Payne-Antic is a heck of a roster. Ready to beat Indiana and straigh to the NBA Finals.
Should we get Carmelo or trade Millsap for a real good center, then we are in a position to get it all.
BELIEVE.

Even if Bud has now increased the value, if we didn't succeed to get Howard and Paul last year, I don't see why we could get Melo and LeBron.

Better keep an eye on other guy, and if both guys were interested, we could get Deng starting at 8M and Gasol at 9.5M if we don't send Q.O. to Scott and Mack (and Ayon)
Then we would have the Room Exception.

We would be easily contender in the East.

We are not one of the teams that are meeting with gasol.

Pau Gasol will meet with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls and Golden State Warriors in free agency.

The New York Knicks are also believed to be interested in Gasol, while the Los Angeles Lakers haven't been ruled out.

Gasol has been with the Lakers since being traded there by the Memphis Grizzlies in February 2008.

Maybe Ferry and Budz can still lure Carmelo if they trade Millsap and sign a bigger name free agent like Gasol, Wade, or Bosh. I think a Carmelo, Gasol, and Horford team could be elite.

After conducting meetings with three NBA teams interested in pursuing free-agent star LeBron James, his agent suggested to owners and executives present that a failure of Miami president Pat Riley to rapidly recruit a strong supporting cast could bring finalists back to meet with James himself next week, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Rich Paul, the agent for James, invited three teams – Cleveland, Dallas and Phoenix – to the offices of his Klutch Sports headquarters to listen to pitches.

Sounds like LebRon has 0 interest in Hawks. Won't even let his agent hear our pitch.
I have yet to hear any chatter tying us to Carmelo. And with the Thabo signing, our options have been limited a bit.

He has zero interest in any teams that can't give him the max. So a meeting with a team that cant give him a max is a complete waste of time.

Hawks can easily offer max if they trade Millsap. Portland and Charlotte would be more than happy in getting Sap.

Cavs going after Love if Lebron goes back to Cleveland.

The deal would be basically Love for Wiggins and 4 other players (a combination of Jack, Bennett, Waiters, Zeller, and Thompson)

Hawks can make the same deal with Horford, but take less of the Cavs young talent....

Horford for Wiggins, Dellavedova, Sergey, Zeller, Jack, and Waiters

The beneifit with the Horford trade is that the Cavs can keep Bennett and Thompson.

CLE has already agreed to deal Sergey, Jack, and Zeller (the deal was agreed to yesterday) so this particular deal would be off the table. I wouldn't mind investigating a deal based around Horford for Wiggins or Waiters (would need more incentive if Waiters was the centerpiece) but I don't think it's something that Ferry and Coach Bud would do. Not until the deadline at the very least.
