The Bulls aren't some lock to win titles even if he is.
It's still about Derrick Rose's health and he isn't helping.
People keep saying "If Melo is about winning, he'll come" and take this huge paycut if necessary.
Sure, if we were forming the next Miami Superteam, I could see that. The Heatles took a few million haircut for a virtual lock multiple Finals appearances. Melo could be taking a 60m haircut to 'maybe' be one of three top teams in the East with Indy and Mimai still right there.
We aren't locks, if Rose isn't back to 100%, this team's chances will remain second rate and fringe contenders. I don't see Melo leaving 60m on the table should he have to, for a fringe contender.

Maybe this is a good thing that Rose won't be there. It might show Melo that if he comes here, he could be the face of the organization with Rose as his side kick instead of the opposite.

The 3rd team only had great relevance if it was taking on Taj to allow us to give Melo 20m or so.
The Bulls are sending out the signal we have no intention to trade Taj if he is coming with Noah to recruit Melo.
It makes our hand look weak. Like we won't go all the way to bring Melo in by paying him the first four years nearly what NY can.
Melo has said it isn't about the money, but it always is to some extent.
It cuts both ways.
If Melo loves the pitch, that's a clear indicator that he's been apprised of all the financials and he's still on board.
That makes our hand significantly stronger.

This is the part which has happened in every thread where the "trade Taj now" brigade are making comments like the one you responded. Melo has always said that he wants more help and not less help.

Cliff Levingston has a feeling that most of these FA visits are pretty trivial. Melo probably already has his mind mostly made up but will do his due diligence and enjoy the ego stroke that comes along with it. So, if Taj is there or not, if probably doesn't affect anything.
Noah being there is all that really matters. He's the one who was in Melo's ear during the all-star break and he's the best player we have right now that Melo can count on to be there for the majority of games.

When he comes in we can show him the team and say: we can pay you 15m dollars.
But we aren't just competing with NY.
Houston can say we have a deal lined up for Lin, and X and Y, and we can pay you Max and here is the team you'll still have. 2 superstars.
If he's all about money, it's NY. If he's about the best mix of winning and money, its probably Houston.
If he's only about winning and has truly forsaken monetary concerns as important at all, Chicago. Tough choice to believe I find.

If Boozer is amnestied and Butler/Snell/Dunleavy/Randolph are sent for pure capspace. Chicago could still offer Melo a contract starting at $20M/Year.
Rose
who cares
Melo
Taj
Noah
plus $8MTPE to work with.

If Melo is concerned about being the face of an organization he'll just stay in New York. He ain't visiting L.A. and Dallas to be the face of the organization, trust me.

Nope, Boozer amnesty does not all become cap space, much of it is sitting over the cap line.
To get up to 20 and beyond Taj has to go.

If he's WILLING to play for less, he could still get more. His willingness to take lose would deplete New York's leverage, and they'd probably negotiate a S&T at that point.
His family is in NY, his wife wants to be there. Its mostly than NY wont be competetive for a while and they may not even offer him the Max.

Re: Taj will recruit. He'll be at Melo meeting (with Noah)
So...
The player who can help maximize the most of his salary is invited to the meeting and is supposed to be some kind of selling point?
Noah is enough. I'm not sure what the point of a career bench player's attendance means but from where I'm sitting, it doesn't seem like the brightest of decisions.
Especially if it comes to MY money, if I'm Carmelo, that is. So not only am I taking less than a player that hasn't played in 2 years but I'm taking it for a team that hasn't won a title in over 15.
Yeah, I just have a feeling this is all going go work out...

The money component is just too hard to read. Melo himself says it's not about the money. He says he could retire today and he'd be "good."
Now perhaps that's all talk, but he's reached the legacy stage in his career.
Do you think Charles Barkley would rather have an extra $20 million in the bank, or a '93 finals victory over Michael Jordan?
I think Sir Charles takes the victory 10 times out of 10.
I believe Melo wants to win championships first and foremost. He's already made $136 million in salary, and that doesn't include endorsement deals. And that doesn't include future earning potential.
This should make for a fascinating two weeks.
Scottie Pippen's response to whom he would pick for his running mate, Michael or LeBron: "That's a dumbass question. I've never done anything with LeBron. I wouldn't take LeBron to the movies."

LeBron is more legacy starved than Melo, and LBJ just made 30m off the Beats headphones deal. He's not hurting even less.
If we believed these players are so much not about money, LeBron could take 12m year 1 starting same as Bosh and Wade, and bring Melo to Miami.
Do we really believe Melo is less about money than LeBron?
These throwaway comments players make should be assumed to have reasonable limitations. At 15.8 Melo would be around the 20th paid player in the league only.

We all know Melo WANTS to stay in NY. His wife has a career there, his family is there. Its just a point of is being in NY better than being competetive. Becuase there is no garuantee they will ever be good enough to contend before Melo is too old to contribute.

Rerisen - unfortunately this is the reality. We can listen all we want to reports that want to say Chicago is a front runner, but it simply seems like a pipe dream. We are talking about a guy that loves New York, loves playing in New York, his wife love New York and his family doesn't want to move anywhere for personal reasons. Then, the team brings in the biggest winner in our lifetime, in Phil Jackson, to build a team around him to win multiple championships. And, on top of that New York can give him a longer, more lucrative contract than any other team. Maybe he leaves all that to team up with LeBron, but for a guy that has never won that has been hurt the last two years? Certainly, a healthy Rose and a Noah that can avoid his historic foot problems along with Thibs makes a compelling case. But, it's a big gamble. If I'm Melo, I try to get a contract with a player opt out in a year or two. By then, he will know whether Phil can really put together a winner, whether Rose is healthy and whether there is a place (maybe Miami?, maybe New York?) where he can team up with LeBron.
