It's fully possible, if not even likely, that despite his puffy comments about a paycut, which could be well meaning even, he was thinking he would come in to these teams and be shown that Houston, Chicago whoever, were going to be ready to give him at least something close, 18 or 20m a year, which is not too painfully off NY, aside the last year.

He could be gobsmacked, even insulted, that the Bulls pitch is simply 15 odd something and look at our try hard cast.

Maybe. I dunno, I've been critical of Melo's style of play at various points and have always been firmly against hollowing out the roster to trade for him, but it certainly seems like he's a pretty bright guy and has been extremely thoughtful about what he wants to do in free agency. I'd be kinda surprised if he had no awareness at all of the situations the teams he's interested are in.

It's all fluid at the moment, obviously. My recruiting scenario above is admittedly far-fetched and perhaps simply implausible, but part of the reason I think there's a chance it could work is because Bulls' people have purportedly been in Melo's ear on and off for months now. I would imagine there's been at least some basic discussion of the mechanics of how he'd get to Chicago, what the dollar figures would look like, and who would remain on the Bulls if he came. So it may come as no surprise to Melo to hear that the ideal basketball scenario requires him to take less money, and that on the other end (Melo gets his max), the Bulls might have to move Taj to make it happen. Melo almost certainly does not have a Mark Deeks or Zach Lowe or Rerisen-level understanding of the moving parts, but I'd be a little surprised if he didn't have some awareness.
Can I borrow a feeling?

But much respect to Noah and Taj!!

You do know there has been a report that he might/will be there right?

Well Im going by his OWN words as of right now

But it was reported less than an hour ago. I guess continue on with your Rose Rampage Rant. I gave you something to show you that you might be channeling your anger wrong

I guess that is why it will be a fluid conversation and not just a sheet of paper faxed over to his agent. Players will be brought in to talk about their experiences as players in Chicago. Playing for Thibs, living in the city of Chicago, the team's culture, the facilities, management, etc. There is a limited amount of time and, I would expect much of the pitch would be about Thibs' offensive philosophy and how Melo will bolster that weakness on the team. They will talk about how Thibs can improve his defense and incorporate him into an overall strong defensive scheme. Then, the conversation will be turned over to GarPax and who knows if Noah or Gibson will even stay for the remainder of the pitch.

I don't know for sure, but perhaps the only real mention of compensation will be to gauge his view on what type of package he wants to get. The Bulls can make it work with more support or less support. They can frame it as a core of Rose, Melo and Noah with the ability to retain other players depending on his overall package. But, the ability to add to this core over time with a willingness to pay the luxury tax for a winner (either way). I think if you really want Melo, you need to be able to be flexible in your conversation depending on what is most important to him.

Trust me, he knows the cap..

He doesn't know Chicago's intentions though. So unless we have fed him info prior, he may not know how limited of an offer we seem to be prepared to make.

The Bulls have been going hard with these lines of "We want (Melo - they cant say his name) on our terms" for weeks now. To come to find out they were never serious about clearing the decks if it came to that, would not be a shock.

They want the entire workload of the deal happening to be on Melo's graciousness, and bearing all the risk. It just looks like a big reach.

The same thing could be accomplished - even better - by the Bulls being the one to threaten the leap. That is actually more likely to produce the desired outcome, a S&T where everyone is happy.

Im a BULLS fan first not a Rose fan first and what Rose is doing is not helping the bulls at ALL....So I will be one of those people who would want him out of here

Context context context. Coach Thibs said it today himself during the press conference. We do not know what is going on behind the scenes. Disappointed in the Rose bashing here... I'm sure Rose would want to do anything to get a 'chip to Chicago and to redeem himself the past 2 years.

Again reported

And again going by the words that came out of Rose mouth himself

But keep defending the man that has done so much for us the past 2 years...maybe Reggie will be in the office since you know he thinks Rose needs more help

So this would be no small thing for Melo to take the plunge and be willing to come for what's available.

Not sure I understand your point here. Can you elaborate?

The point is that if the Bulls have a believable option to trade Taj, the amount of money we can still give Melo if he walks to us for cap space is believable to make NY blink.

Taj coming to the meeting gives a very strong signal that he isn't going to be moved to create the space to land the very same player he is recruiting.

Which means for the Knicks to be sufficiently scared they are going to lose Melo for nothing, they have to believe he is willing to walk for a massive massive pay cut. I'm not sure that is believable and they might just say "do it" like the Lakers did. Except unlike that situation, Dwight still got paid a boatload, Melo will swallow hard at what he'll be taking and it could turn him right back to NY.

So you were just making the same point as you were in the other post where you worried that we were neutering our bargaining position. I gotcha.

I share that worry to some extent, although on the other hand, if there are multiple other teams with capspace that could sign Melo outright, we wouldn't have to have capspace ourselves to get him. We would just need to beat those other teams' S&T offers. Sounds as if the best we could do, without offering Taj, would be something like Mirotic, future draft pick, Dunleavy, and perhaps Butler if we're willing to give him up. Maybe McDermott, if Phil likes him.

wow some of you guys will certainly go out of your way to bash Rose, he has nothing to do with this FA period, Melo is closer to Taj and Jo since they're all from New York. Plain and simple explanation.

Nope I will continue to praise Gar/Pax for the great work they have done with so little they have these past seasons with Rose going down and I will also give credit to Noah Thibs and Taj
