i get that, but he has small salary, so its not like we are getting much cap space, or something, if we have to give something worth while i would rather give Mirotic, i mean if its give Mirotic or no Melo, i would give him, if even can come to that! we need stoper like Jimmy if we get Melo!

2m can make a huge difference especially if we have to clear capspace....and in a S&T im sure phil would want some type of good assets

As Magilla has pointed out the only reason Melo would even have us on the list is if he is at least somewhat confident Rose can be an excellent player again. Melo isn't coming to CHI just to play with Noah, as good as Noah is, he is not the caliber of player with whom a pairing would lead to a title.

Ideally you want to keep Butler on the roster, so that drops to around $15m.

IMO it's simple -- that team is too thin to comfortably compete this year, unless GarPax hit 5 home-runs in the vet. min. market. To me, if Melo wants to join a GOOD contender, a S&T has to be done, and either Phil Jackson needs to compromise on a deal including Boozer (but with some good assets to off-set the salary, like Mirotic and future picks), or a 3rd team needs to get involved and give us the TPE we need.

I always get confused with how TPEs work, but if I remember correctly, you can't combine 2/3 different exceptions to offer a max salary to a UFA, right? However, what if we deal a Boozer/Randolph/$3m-non-guaranteeds/Mirotic or Kings 1st package to a team like the Jazz, Suns or Mavs? You get a fat $22m TPE in exchange (and perhaps some very low salary scrubs to fill the roster), and then just directly use that to acquire Melo in a S&T.

I don't see how else Chicago could pull off Melo + a deep team, unless he signs for a silly low salary (like $14m a year). We can even keep Dunleavy in that scenario.

Rose Kirk
Butler Snell
Melo Dunleavy
Taj McD
Noah Smith

Philly seems to make sense as a dumping spot for Boozer. They aren't really trying to win next year, they need to reach the salary floor and they are trying to collect all the future picks that they can. Not sure what it would take, maybe a 1st or 2? Jimmy Butler?

I suspect the front office already has a bunch of contingencies ready to go if they get the green light from Melo.

I think any Diana Rose no-show during recruitment will certainly be taken as a snub by the Melo camp.

Taj ain't getting traded; that needs to end now. We invited him to the meeting, so there's three reasons that means we're absolutely keeping him.

1) Jo began the offseason saying that he'll recruit Melo and that his stipulation to the FO was that Taj stayed. Well, here Jo is..bringing Taj to the recruiting meeting.
2) No player would ever come help a team recruit a superstar player to help them get a title if the meeting ended with him not being a part of it. Just doesn't make sense.
3) We've known what our selling point would be all along: we're the most ready to help Melo get a title next year. Why? Defense, effort, the grit. Taj and Jo. We're bringing the physical embodiment of our sales pitch to the meeting. Again, the whole thing would be ruined if it ended with us breaking it up.

I hope this still means we keep Jimmy. And it's out of the question we'll keep McDermott. Do we make it out of this with Mirotic still? Still some questions left, but not about Taj.

He hasn't played in 2 years, and if his recent comments are any indication, he's probably better off NOT talking

Forman: "Well Melo. We got a great team assembled here in Chicago."

Noah: "Come on Melo. We got this!"

Taj: "Yeah, you're the last piece of the puzzle."

*Rose quietly looking out the window completely disinterested*

Rose: "Do you guys ever think about death?"

*Forman, Noah, Taj and Melo look at each other perplexed*

Rose: "Sometimes I wonder why I even bother trying to come back to play basketball. We're just specks of sand in a desert. Our contributions completely trivial and meaningless, at best. I mean, it's almost as if we play basketball to masquerade our own disappointments with reality settling in and we soon realize that our existence has no purpose."

*Melo pretends to look at his phone*

Melo: "Hey, well you look at that! I almost forgot about my flight to Texas."

Forman: "I thought it was tomorrow."

Melo: "Yeah...well....you know how airports are!"

*Melo runs off and re-ups with the Knicks*

I understand what you're saying and you may well be right, but give the hyperbole a rest, please. I can assure you my feet are both firmly planted on the ground. I'll elaborate a bit on my point, and perhaps you'll accept that I am in fact sane. If not, that's OK too. The degree of my sanity certainly depends on who you ask. :)

Look, NBA players have egos and pride the size of Jupiter, I understand this. But I think they're also generally aware of the pecking order and where they are on it (with exceptions for dopes like JR Smith). Taj Gibson must realize that he is probably a less important player to NBA teams than Carmelo Anthony. That being the case, I simply think it's possible, knowing what we know about Taj and the fact that he seems like an "adult" by NBA player standards, that the front office could approach him to discuss the Melo situation with him, let him know he's extremely highly valued by the team, but that if it comes down brass tacks and the Bulls conclude that the only way they can land Carmelo Anthony is to trade Taj, they'd have to do it. They might then say, "but look, what we want to accomplish is to keep you while getting Melo here. We think we can pull it off, but it won't be easy." In that specific context, I can see Taj participating in the recruitment even without a 100% ironclad promise he won't be moved. And in that context, Taj wouldn't be rushing to the media with stories of betrayal after the fact.

But I'll grant your point - our front office has not earned the benefit of the doubt that they could manage this situation as adroitly as I just described. Riley, maybe. Spurs front office, maybe. I am generally supportive of GarPax, but I would agree that they haven't shown a touch this deft. Point taken.

If you want to insinuate that I'm high on acid, be my guest. I'm just suggesting the above is possible. The totality of the circumstances gives me a bit of hope that they're playing a nice game of chess here. I stand ready to be totally wrong. It wouldn't be the first time or the hundreth and I'll get over it.

I apologize if I was over the top with my critique.

That being said, yeah I still think you are nuts. You cite Riley, but even he, who breaks/bends rules never tried such a thing as this as far as we know. As for San An. I don't think they treat their guys like that. Thats harsh treatment and they treat their players like family. Fact is you don't even ask your family to do something like that.

As for the Bulls they have never shown an indication to be as cutthroat as this so yeah, I think what you suggest is lacking all precedence. Sure antyhing is possible, flying elephants etc. but Occam's razor suggests the more likely scenario is a promise to Taj not to be traded.

No worries - I only took umbrage to the "most delusional thing I've ever read on this board" (paraphrasing) remark. I mean, I've been posting here off and on since 2001 and there's been a lot of really, really crazy stuff said on this board in that time. What I'm saying can't possibly be the most delusional.

Can it? Ugh, now I'm worried. Think I'll call a shrink just to be on the safe side. If I get diagnosed schizophrenic, I'll blame you but ultimately be grateful we identified the problem.

In any event, you're not the only one (who thinks I'm nuts). You're right it lacks all precedent. But there's a first time for everything, this has been a long-evolving courtship between Chicago and Melo which makes me think all parties are more aware than usual of the moving parts at play, and I think Taj is the kind of character who could understand what's going on and be disappointed but not heartbroken or angry if he gets dealt to bring Melo here. It's definitely a lot to ask of him (or anyone) and unlikely though.

anyway...I'll go back to mumbling incoherently at bystanders about the CIA's plot to turn me into a centaur now. Wait, maybe I shouldn't have said that....
