Bulls knew Knicks offered him the Max if true. If reporters know Melo's agent knows. If Leon Rose knows Thibs knows.

Side note: Are there no leaves on those trees? It's July. I used to live in Chicago for 22 years and now live in a place without seasons, but I recall there being leaves on trees.

Maybe the silver lining would be that it was done 'informally' allowing some time for knicks to line up solutions and rethink.

Jedi mind trick. Phil knows Melo is gone so he won't look bad if he offers Melo the max and Melo leaves. You see, the Knicks are lucky if Melo stays and they are lucky if Melo leaves.

More like, well played Melo, well played. It was never in doubt.

As if he had to do anything. Anyone with a brain knew he had multiple suitors, and NY had zero leverage.

If this is true, then the Bulls weren't trying to get him to sign for 4/60. There has to be more going on financial wise then we know about.

Moment of truth, Melo.

Simple as that. He always knew the Knicks would offer him the most money. It comes down to just how badly he wants to compete for a title. The Miami 3 wanted it bad enough. We'll see what Melo chooses.

Knicks fan here (in peace)

Is going to play in Chicago a championship for sure? Let's see, Rose is coming off of three knee surgeries and the Bulls owner is known to be frugal.(see stoudemire)

Do you honestly think he would leave AT LEAST 40 million on the table for a CHANCE to win a championship? After next year his odds would be just as good in NY. Could any of us leave that type of money on the table?

Melo saying he doesnt want the Bulls to trade Taj -- but then Melo signing with New York......would be like "no but listen if you changed, i wouldnt stop being your platonic friend. you are my friend forever, ok? You are like a big brother to me"

So a championship ring matters more to you than generational wealth?

It could when your rich as F*** your wife is rich as F*** and you are signed to the Jordan brand. Melo even said he could retire right now if he wanted.

This is true. Offering the max allows Phil to walk away unscathed - all while doing what he wanted to do, which is to reboot the franchise.

True. Boehiem whom I respect said Melo does value a ring. He is a winner his concern will be health IMHO. If it comes down to that the Knicks have an advantage, IMHO I don't think it is all about money, it mostly is, but the ring guarantee cannot be promised here. Not a punchers chance but a contenders chance is there. Funny thing, maybe just maybe Lebron is sweating a little bit now and Melo might like that.

Super Lurker here... been refreshing these threads all day at work all week.

Now if the Knicks actually offer Melo the 'Super Max' over 5 years... doesn't that completely screw over their rebuilding process?

Also - If Melo is indeed out to dinner right now with the Bulls as reported by KC - it looks promising, don't you think?

Phil already said he would extend a max contract, if that is what it took. Even though I do not think he is, if Melo is a good as people are suggesting, they could always trade Melo, down the line, when they have all the leverage, and get a much greater return.

This was a given all along, just a matter of what was important to Melo.

He can spend that year counting the extra millions.

He's resigning with New York.

If he stays in NY, we will know he's a liar and it will make beating the Knicks even that much more enjoyable.

Exactly. Knicks, if he signs in Chicago, we will beat you. If he signs in NY, we will still beat you.

I personally think Melo will take the super max and I wouldn't blame him. But we've seen recently players on championship teams taking less than what they are worth for the chance to win (Dirk, Spurs core, Heat Big 3). It's not like it's unheard of.

How so?

And legacy in basketball can bring never ending wealth. If Melo wins here money will never be an issue. His wife will be the new Oporah and his shoes and clothes will sell til the end of time.
