I think this signing is getting overlooked. This guy shot 39% from 3 his last 4 seasons in WAS/ATL. Even if all he does is spot up for 3 and hustles on defense, he could be our starting SF next year. That's really all we need out of that position. And to get him for what is likely the vet min, it kind of balances out the Meeks signing.

Instead of looking at it like 6 mil for Meeks, look at it like we got two 39-40% 3pt shooters for about 7-8 mil combined. That's a fair price for two shooters in any market.

I don't think Martin could be our starting SF next year. He could definitely give us some spot starts in case of injuries and such, but not more than that. That said, I'll agree with you that this signing is being tossed aside as meaningless by far too many people. If Van Gundy announced that he was going to be our primary backup SF next season to Singler, I'd be very content with that. He's an elite 3 point shooting backup at a position of need.

I think that the start to the offseason has been very good for Van Gundy.

I'm very much on-board with everything you two have been adding today and think looking at it like we got two 39-40% 3pt shooters for about 7-8 mil combined may help bring a few of the doubters around.

I think Martin could be a nice role player off the bench, he is a career 38% 3 point shooter and 73% free throw shooter, combine that with meeks and we already have improved the pistons shooting. We desperately needed shooting from the 3 and free throws.

Nice post.

This isn't even a signing worth complaining about. Cheap deal, 3-point shooter, bench player. What is there really to complain about? It's not like he's giving him $48 million.

Taking away capspace from larger, more significant players (like lets say Thomas), is probably a bad idea early in the FA game, especially if its to sign a 9th man type.

That is a good point. But, I think if the Thomas situation progresses anywhere, it will probably end in a sign and trade anyways. But, you do make a good point in terms of tying up cap space on a guy who would probably be there in a few weeks, or someone fairly equal in what they can do.

Somehow I get the impression that the people complaining about us signing shooters too early were complaining even louder when we missed out on all the good shooters in prior years.

The pistons are not a destination team. If we sit and wait on players, all that does is put us in a position where a guy is picking between us and a playoff team.

^ Yes. SVG is doing exactly what we all wanted. Spacing and shooters around our non-shooters. Drummond plus good shooters = win. I'm pretty optimistic.

There's a thing called a caphold.

What does that have to do with this? a 500k roster-hold is less than whatever Martin is going to be
making

Martin isn't getting more than the vet minimum. To think the extra $ over the cap hold would effect signing any other player is ridiculous.

Call me crazy.....but I doubt the dude signed for the minimum on the first day of free agency.

Albeit not by a ton (I hope), I'm sure he's getting more than the min.

$1-2 mil perhaps.

Martin, 29, is getting only the veteran’s minimum salary.

The key enticement was the second year of the two-year deal. It’s a player option, meaning the Pistons have no problem committing to Martin for two seasons.

The deal gives Martin a level of security that he has never had, as it’s the first two-year deal of his six-year career with various NBA teams.

Martin has had a series of one-year deals, 10-day contracts, professional stints overseas and D-League time.

He will provide outside shooting, but the No. 1 attraction is Martin’s energy and fire, areas coach Stan Van Gundy says were lacking last season.

So it’s a signing to address that weakness.

Similar tactic was probably used to get Gray into the fold early.

2 years for a fringe NBA player?

On the plus side, he is better than Datome and I suppose this signing has an outside hint of upside.

He's a depth signing that fits the shooting/defense role we need. The timing of the signing was a little strange, but overall, I have no problems with it.

Well,
it's a start, as long that we don't start Smith at the 3, ok to me......

As long as the vets minimum guys agree to sign after we cap out with other signings, getting them to agree now - likely at the cost of a second year PO - could be a smart strategy.

For anybody interested the minimum salary for Cartier over the next two seasons is $1,145,685 in 2014-15 and $1,270,964 in 2015-16.

I hope to God they play Fancy by Iggy Azalea every time he gets a bucket....

That fancy name tho.

Overall I'm fine with this. We had no spacing or outside shooting last year (well we had plenty of it, but not many went in). Low risk, possibly good fit, in SVG we trust.
