It's not terrible for the Bulls- as it will keep the Knicks from being ultra competitive for the life span of the deal. Knicks give super max to a 30 year old player who will be more or less untradeable- topping out with a salary of 29mm in his final year of the deal. New TV deal may raise the cap appreciably- and maybe the Knicks won't blink about going over the cap. But then you've got one guy taking up 35% of your cap. Makes it awfully hard to build a competitive roster. Couple that with a coach who has zero experience- and it's not exactly a recipe for sustained success.

1. If I were a Knicks fan, I'd want Melo to take a pretty heavy discount. I'd want Phil to reboot the team. They are finally at a place where they can do that. But then again, I'm not what you'd call Anthony's biggest fan. I don't believe in him as a franchise cornerstone you can build around. Its a little different in Chicago because of the moves we made, and the existing cast that seems to fit him well. But I'd never build a team around Carmelo Anthony as the starting point.

If the Knicks gave Anthony a maximum contract, he'd be owed $25.3 million for the 2015-16 season. The roster could change, but here's where the Knicks would stand based on current contracts for the summer of 2015:

Anthony $25.3 million
Jose Calderon $7.4 million
J.R. Smith (likely opt-in) $6.4 million
Pablo Prigioni $1.7 million
Tim Hardaway Jr. $1.3 million
1st-round draft pick and six minimum salaries: $5 million

Total = $47.1 million; Projected cap space: About $18 million.

Enter the Bulls with this sign-and-trade scenario. They send Carlos Boozer, Mike Dunleavy, Tony Snell and the nonguaranteed contracts of Ronnie Brewer, Mike James and Lou Amundson to New York for Anthony and Smith. In a separate deal, the Bulls could trade Anthony Randolph for Prigioni. Throw in a future first-round pick if it helps. Boozer, Dunleavy, Randolph and Snell are under contract for one more season, which leaves the Knicks with this group on the books:

Calderon $7.4 million

Hardaway $1.3 million

1st-round draft pick and nine minimum salaries: $4.8 million

Total = $13.5 million. Projected cap space: More than $50 million in a summer when the free agent list could include Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, among others. The Knicks also get to keep their own first-rounder in 2015. Which is a better scenario for Phil Jackson? -Daily Herald

Don't want your kids living in Chiraq- Well we've had multiple successful people and our like the 2nd or 3rd biggest city. The biggest person I've heard from Houston Beyonce.

It's cold- Well it's hot as hell in Houston and Melo's from NY he don't care about the cold.

We got a big mall- Well guess what we do to and we have multiple ones plus navy pier plus the Sear Tower.

If I'm an athlete, I look at Houston and think there must be something wrong behind the scenes there. Every year it seems they go after the big fish, reel in one or two..or three. And what do you know - they can't pass the first round?

Not only that, they are very disloyal to their players - publicly stating they'd ship Harden away a year after grabbing him, throwing all the money in the world at Asik and Lin and casting them off. Hell, they have Lin's number given away already. It's pathetic.

Compare that to the team atmosphere the Bulls surely presented yesterday (and have since Thibs arrived) and it's a no-brainer.

But times have changed in the NBA. To have multiple superstars they need to make sacrifices.

You understand that if the reports are true about Wade taking $12 mil and Bosh taking $10 mil, that Carmelo can sign outright with Miami for almost the same money as Chicago could give right?
Even if Lebron takes $20 mil, Carmelo can sign for about $17-$18 mil.

Those reports have been denied by those players' agent, and then Broussard reported that they were looking for numbers more in the $15 mil per. Who knows?

But assuming the reports are true and those guys sign for that, my understanding was that it only freed up $12 million for free agency.

And lastly, I'm not sure what any of this has to do with the Knicks offering Melo the max.

I think, I THINK, his point was that why would Melo sign with an inferior Bulls team when he could make comparable money on a superior Heat team.


For the record, I haven't seen any evidence that suggests they want to play together. I think Melo wants to BEAT LeBron.
