Re: Welcome To Charlotte: P.J. Hairston
i think it is absolutely fair for the fans of the Hornets to be a little nervous about the fact that hairston is having all these parties just one week into his pro career. here is a player whose off-court issues got him kicked off his college team and caused him to drop probably 10 spots in the draft, at least. if this was a player with a near spotless off-court record, there would be little concern. it is normal and understandable for a 21 year old guy, who just reached his lifelong dream, to celebrate a little. however, hairston does not have a near spotless off-court record is already under the microscope with an army of naysayers watching to see if he screws up again. hopefully, this is just a one week party binge and the rest of his hornet career is nothing but hard work and good times and nothing but boring stories away from the court. for now, we can file this behavior under the slightly concerning category.
this reminds me a lot of johnny manziels first few months in cleveland.
and to be perfectly honest, if hairston turns out to be a stud, while doing this crap, then i dont think any of us give a crap. it only becomes an issue if he is struggling, not reaching expectations or causing chemistry issues within the team.

i dont think any of us are surprised at that statement. i'd be more shocked to find out he didnt go to class high.
slightly off-topic, do we have any known pot smokers on the current team? i'd bet on zeller, tolliver and biz not being pot smokers. i wouldnt put money on the rest of them. that being said, i also believe, perhaps naively, that we have one of the most straight edged lockerrooms in the league.

What is his ceiling though honestly? Elite 6th man? What kind of career can we realistically envision him having if things go well off the court and if he dedicates himself to the game.

I don't think Zeller could possibly have skirted marijuana being so buddy-buddy with McBong the whole season. He was probably railroaded into doing gravity hits at least once.

Actually, being UNC I'm surprised that he had actual classes to attend whilst high.

He attended them all the time, his grades were all very high.

Id be willing to bet 3/4 of the NBA tokes down every now and then, or probably even quiet a bit, but I doubt hardly anyone else in the NBA has gotten pulled over with 2 ounces of pot in their vehicle, though.

PJ's personality reminds me a lot of my brother's. He's going to do what he wants. He's extremely hard headed. But he's cool, calm and collected and someone you want on your side. Even though you cant tell him nothin, he's very talented and will succeed as long as you dont consider something like smoking pot failing. I can almost guarantee that PJ still blazes. Whether or not he gets caught doing something stupid is what matters.
The Lamb flock's vision has come true.

i agree. players smoking weed doesnt really bother me, especially if they mostly keep that activity limited to the off-season.
for hairston, my concern is more related to perceived poor judgement, than a concern of him smoking weed. also, more concerned about players who drink too much than smoke too much, although i dont think chronic weed smoking is something we should accept from any of our players. i dont care how talented you are, if you are a burnout, you arent reaching your potential as a elite athlete.
i dont know enough about hairston to know if he is just a guy having a fun few weeks, if he is a casual pot smoker who can keep his smoking to the offseason, if he is more of a booze hound or if he is a complete burnout.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: P.J. Hairston
put it this way, if you took the 20 best players in the league currently, you would probably find a lower percentage of heavy weed smokers compared to the general NBA population. no stats to back that statement up, just my gut. i dont dont see how you can be an elite, superstar level NBA player if you burn often. pot has never made anyone a better athlete, other than possibly helping a few guys get thru some pain.

i honestly think he has all the physical tools to be a top 10 shooting guard in his prime, maybe even better. it will be up to him to see if he can get to that level. so many players NBA have the physical abilities to be really good, but not all have the work ethic, brains, maturity, coachability (or just basically intangibles) to get to that next level.

Pot smoking will not affect his cardio as long as he vaporizes.
Vapor does not damage the lungs, in any way, shape or form.
For his sake and ours, if he wants to smoke, vape son, vape.

The biggest damage done to your lungs via smoking marijuana is the tobacco you put in with the green.
Joints are fine if smoked without tobacco, although the rolling papers can damage your lungs over a period of time ie. years.
Bongs aka water pipes are cleaner than most ways of smoking due to the water filtering out all the crap ala tobacco etc but you run the risk of getting water on your lungs aka pleurisy.
Vaporizing turns the THC content from the bud of marijuana into steam which you then suck in.
It actually repairs your lungs...
There is no medical evidence to ever suggest that marijuana smoked straight green has ever caused cancer or emphysema in anyone in history.
By vaping, you minimise all risk.

not all risk. eating is still by far the least harmful method. i say this as a guy with a wife who meets periodically with a respirologist who is very open with discussing research into lung health.
