Re: 2014 Official FA Thread 2
I hope we don't wait around for like 2 weeks for his highness to make a decision.
I think giving LBJ the deadline of July 8th would be a good idea to let us know if he's coming here or not. If he is then great, if he's not then we move on and I can kill my dreams. Because if he does decide to come here, then there won't be many FAs on the market for us to pair with him if he takes forever to decide.
A week is plenty of time to make a decision. Even back in '10 when he was roaming the country making visits and meetings left and right with like more than 6 teams, he was still able to decide and announce his signing with Miami by July 8th. So this time around since his agent is doing all the work and he isn't making any visits or anything, July 8th is a very lenient deadline imo.

that is true to an extent, but remember that if lesser free agents are picked up by the other big cap-space teams, it also means that fewer teams will have the ability to sign him. I'm thinking that just as we are willing to wait for a few days, so will everyone else.

I don't think Gortat was massively overpaid like some of those guards. Big men hit their prime late and Gortat is in his prime now and probably won't experience much decline until the last few years of his deal. Good big men are also hard to find.

A few days is ok, even a week is fine but anything more than that imo just silly. He isn't a 13 year old kid, he's a grown ass man, he should be able to know where he wants to play within a week. If he doesn't say anything then that's a sign that he's made up his mind despite all the reports on a rift and conflict and the big 3 in Miami not being on the same page or whatever BS.

Or he's acting like a FA the exact opposite way as last time quietly letting his agent handle things. What Melo is doing now was LBJ from 2010.
I don't have a problem with him waiting to see what MIA does. He has given Riley his salary demands and a window for them to upgrade the team and thru 2 days it's not looking good for them. Sarver said it himself, it's a unique situation that rarely happens.

My understanding of the 24-48 hr timetable was that teams would call Rich and if he doesn't call back, within that time period, then it's a no-go. But I thought I read that we managed to have a chat with Rich.

Melo isn't the first FA to make visits before signing off somewhere. Neither was LeBron.
He can act in however way he wants but I don't think in the past 8 years or so, star FAs have taken more than a week to switch teams.
There is 0 chance that he comes here if he is reportedly still "undecided" even an entire week after FA opened.

I wonder if LeBron and Bledsoe are his only clients who are actually even remotely good at basketball. I have heard agent names before but Rich Paul is one that I have only heard associated with LeBron & Bledsoe.

I believe he reps Tristan Thompson and Kevin Srerapin too.. but obviously Lebron and Bledsoe are the biggest.
From what I remember reading Rich Paul is one of Lebrons oldest friends,

Magic not the only team interested in Raptors RFA Patrick Patterson. Suns are as well. PHX "is after him," source said.

In addition to those 2015 picks, we will be not paying Beasley and CHildress any more. Beasley, 6,5 mill, will come out of the books, and we will stop giving CHildress 7 million a year (this was not counting against the salary, as we amnistied him).
Green, 3,5, will como out too next year.
With the M&Ms and Len in their rookie contracts, we will have 10 million more to spend in FA.

He would replace Frye. Plus Bledsoe and Patterson already have built in chemistry from their time at Kentucky.

Lebron probably sign a 1year max contract with Heat and leave definitely if they don't win or improve dramatically as in add younger talent.

Zoran Dragic is close to a two-year contract extension with Unicaja Malaga, according to La Opinion de Malaga.
The Slovenian combo guard spent the last two seasons with the Spanish team.
Both parties will have the option to break the deal after the first season paying 700.000 euros, La Opinion de Malaga reports.

Well, it seems that we will have to wait to see the Gogi-Zoki show in Phoenix.

Forget Bradley and Meeks, hell look at what Ben Gordon just got. Remember when he sucked and people thought he couldn't find a job for the vet min?
And what Washington gave to Gortat!
Zach Lowe had a good take on why here. http://grantland.com/the-triangle/nba-f ... rom-day-1/

But who is really out there that makes us that much better? I don't want us to put ourselves in the position next summer to feel Dragic is tough to keep at the price he demands. People want to spend money, but even Sarver said "We're not going to spend money just to spend it." after talking about how they'd like to (but that obviously meant on the right guys if they'd come here.
I say keep the space open and if you can use it to your advantage later when a team wants to dump an expiring and give you something to do it, fine. Dallas may feel the need to dump Brandan Wright's expiring $5 million salary. I'm sure a team like Orlando would be fine taking it but that's just an example. He helps in some situations too.
I'm also sure McD has his eyes set on cheap guys with upside and potential that could develop into something that could fit our system (for example, as I mentioned before - Grant Jerrett).
Grant Jerrett
Measurements: Jerrett - 6'10 (7'2 wingspan), 232 lbs
2013-14 Summary: Jerrett spent 2013-14 in the D-League, where he put up respectable numbers, shooting 36.4% from deep and averaged 15 pts and 6 rbds per game.
Player Profile: Jerrett is a young, prototypical stretch 4. Jerrett just turned 20, has a legitimate outside shot, though the mechanics of Jerrett's shot are...unconventional. Jerrett, is likely a decent long term prospect.
Suns Fit: He would project as direct a replacement for Channing Frye's skill set, but is not likely to be able to step right in and fill in for Channing. He would provide an outside shooting touch and an ability to stretch the defense, something that is often necessary with the Suns' two-point guard style.
or possibly Gustavo Ayon
What about this guy as a reserve center if we don't get big names? From same article...another potential cheap option....10.5 boards per 36..not bad.
Gustavo Ayon, C
Measurements: 6'10, 240 lbs
2013-14 Summary: Ayon put in another quiet but solid season with Atlanta.
Totals Per 36 Minutes Per 36 Minutes Shooting

Data courtesy Basketball-Reference.com.
He suffered an injury that limited him to just 26 games (in tandem with an unwillingness by the team to use him), and is considering returning to play in Europe.
Player Profile: Ayon is not a flashy player - he is the epitome of a bench player. He doesn't have a dominant skillset, but is a fairly efficient scorer, a more than passable rebounder, a decent man to man defender and a willing and capable passer out of the high post. At 28, Ayon is what he is - a reserve big man. But he brings a unique amount of experience as the driving force behind the Mexican national team and a player who has played in Europe and bounced around the NBA for a few years.
Suns Fit: The Suns have a hole at the center position (SLAVA!!!!) that will likely be filled and should be filled. The two guys currently on the roster have 3 NBA seasons between them. Ayon would provide a veteran presence for the bench that might be lacking if we lose Tucker and/or Frye.
