Being the Best isn't good enough
Being the best player in the NBA isn't enough to get a championship in this day and age. Lebron IS the best player in the NBA, he's one of the greatest of all time but he has no guarantees of winning another championship.
To maximise that possibility he needs to take less than the max in order to get the best supporting cast possible. He'll recuperate more than he gives up if he wins 1 more championship. I don't understand his present alleged stance.
There is no where else that he can go to guarantee a championship and let's face it there are not many places where he could have as good a chance as with the same team as last season.
I guess he could go to Chicago and hope that Rose recovers and maybe , just maybe he'd be able to get to the championship again. Any team he goes to in the West will have a hard time making it to the Championship game.
I can't see him going anywhere but I can't understand why he isn't taking a cut and talking to other FAs that he wants to play with.
If he wants a max contract with an opt out clause after 1 year I'd think of doing a S&T. Looking around there are teams that'll give their best player and another. Minny would probably give Love and Rubio, Clipps would give Blake and someone else, GS would give Bogut and Thompson. We'd still be in the finals but Bron would probably not.
So why not be more pro-active in getting a better supporting cast?

Re: Being the Best isn't good enough
i think there are two factors:
1. he is still pissed at Arison for cutting Miller just to save money while not! upgrading the roster with players last summer who would play on a regular basis
2. So far no Big Free Agent comes running to Miami.. and even subpar Players are getting overpaid... so even if Lebron took a Paycut to lets say 15 Mio?
Sure the Heat would have around 17 Mio... but who do you want to spend it on? Melo?... ok but after you got him you have NO room for role players... Gortat, resigned,Ariza, too expensive,Gasol, likley going elsewhere,Deng,SF and likley overpaid..
the Idea to create more cap space is nice
but i think Lebron wont take less just to save Arison some money.. i am sure he would take Less if any Big Time Free agent had commited to the Heat! but he wont take less if there is nobody who you could bring in to help..

Re: Being the Best isn't good enough
1. I can't understand that. They got Beas and Oden - maybe they didn't turn out but they could have and they got all the rest of the champion roster back except Miller.
2. FA's will come if you have the money to offer. They obviously didn't have enough to offer. Gasol, Deng, Hawes, Ariza and others haven't agreed to go anywhere yet.
3. If he takes the max this year it doesn't only affect this year - importantly it affects next year and any other after that he stays. He doesn't need the max money, his salary is only a mall part of his income - that's greed

Re: Being the Best isn't good enough
thats not nessessarily greed HIF
Lebron is pissed at the owners as a whole and especially Arison
and i would be too...
look: he sees for how mind blowing ammounts the Clippers and bucks were sold... and then he remembers that his owner... cut a friend of Bron a loved locker rook guy in Miller just to save Arison some money..
its more like a rebellious act^^(not that is like it!) his stance is
"as long as my owner does not make any monetary sacrifices for the Team, why should I ?"
and i cant even blame him for that... Arison needs to show Lebron that his first priority is winning.. not money... until then.. Lebron will be pissed.. and not completly false about it^^

No point in even bringing up Minnesota. Lebron wouldn't go there even if Love wasn't on his way out of town.
As for what other teams would give up, probably not much since Lebron wouldn't want to go to a team that is being dismantled. They might give up some picks and an expiring contract or two, but that about it.

Yeah, annual trips to the finals has got to be a rough life.

Lebron needs to buy in and lower his salary like everyone if he wants to improve this team ... or he can live with it more or less as currently constituted and stop bitching about needing more help. He's already got as much or more help as almost any other star in the league. He comes off as that kid that doesn't want to play unless there's zero chance of losing.
He no longer has in his prime Wade to help him? So what? Neither does anyone else. Suck it up and compete ... and sacrifice ... if you really want to win. Throwing teammates under the bus is no way to establish a "legacy". Neither is walking away from a 4 time championship contender and 2 time champ because you just don't have enough help.

Re: Being the Best isn't good enough
btw the title of this thread is perfect. When you reach the finals 4 straight years and you're looking around for a new team because life's just too tough where you are ...
Maybe Lebron and his people can have the CBA amended to guarantee him the championship every year.

yeah i got you there
but as i said.. why should only the Players sacrifice?? Arison was Cheap the last year.. and if i where Lebron i would be Pissed too if my owner showed tendencies to be cheap...
a tango takes two.. If Arison is adamant to avoid the Tax wich i find ridicolous on a Contender!!!(should be worth it dude.. see here should Arison suck it up!!) i can understand Lebron for beeing angry and a little like "why should i take a paycut when my owner doesnt use the money to improve the Team?"

Re: Being the Best isn't good enough
the miller thing is a huge role. arison cutting miller just to save money was a slap in the face to lebron. basically telling lebron that winning at all costs is not something he is interested in doing. MIller played all 82 games last season and would have helped us.
If arison has an issue paying the tax(and he obviously does) then i cant blame lebron.

Arison has given up everything needed to get Lebron 2 rings and 4 finals appearances. Arison has the proven track record having also given up what was needed to get Shaq here and another championship (that's one more than Lebron).
I think you're overestimating the Lebron Miller link.

Re: Being the Best isn't good enough
I agree that Arison was penny wise and pound foolish when we ditched Mike Miller to save a few million, but I also have to admit to not having a very good grasp of the implications of the luxury and repeater taxes, and how fast they accumulate.
Either way, Lebron has 2 choices ... take the max and live with whatever improvements Pat Riley can make around the edges, or take some kind of cut and give Pat more room to operate. That's it.
If he thinks the grass is greener elsewhere, there's one way to find out for sure.

Of course it is. as yours is only your opinion.
I think Lebron needs to remember life before the Heat.
I think Lebron needs to remember his last "decision"
I think Lebron needs to count his finals apearances With Arison.
I think Lebron needs to count his rings and realise how he got them.
I think Lebron needs to sacrifice salary as Bosh and Wade and Haslem and Allen and Bird and.....are doing EVERY year.

There's no real benefit to trading Lebron on a 1 year deal. We'd be giving up the chance to win it all this season in return for essentially nothing.

thats the point.. even if Lebron wasnt best friends with Mike... he was a very popular guy in the locker room.. and see him stay healthy in Memphis must have been bitter... imagine a healthy Miller with all those games Wade missed.. could have really made a difference!
and besides.. you know the NBA works on the "what have you done for me latley" principe...
sure it gives Arison some rapport with Bron that he delivered 4 Finals and 2 rings!
but he did nothing really last summer... Beasley and Oden where dirt cheap and obviously not ready to help right now.. and what did he do? instead of i dont know.. trading Mike Millers contract for someone usefull who could have helped mid season?? he just was cut... for nothing... for money...
i think Lebron is watching Arison even more closley than Riley right now... he wants to know if the Organisation is willing to do everything it takes...

Well the CBA doesn't allow the type of difference makers you seem to be talking about last year.
I stil think we're all overestimating Mike. His last season for us he was a cripple on the court, perhaps go back and read some of the threads. He had a great finals (well not even all of it) similar to Rashard in the ECF this season. We had plenty of shooters on the bench. Ray ray should have been able to replace him or JJ.
Fact is we made it easily to the finals and then a flat out better team canned our asses. They would have done that whether Mike Miller was there instead of JJ or not.
