Darren Collison to the Kings

Post#1 » by McAdoo » Thu Jul 3, 2014 4:05 pm

The Kings will sign Darren Collison to a three-year, $16MM deal, reports Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link). It’s a fully guaranteed deal, Turner adds (on Twitter). Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype first reported that the sides were engaging in talks (Twitter link).

Sacramento made its desire to add a pass-first point guard clear, even as it seeks to re-sign restricted free agent Isaiah Thomas. Collison rehabilitated his career during his one-year stint with the Clippers, proving an effective backup to Chris Paul and a capable replacement for the superstar when he went down with injury.

It was difficult for the BDA Sports Management client to leave the Clippers, Turner tweets, and Doc Rivers had made re-signing Collison his top offseason priority. Collison was reportedly leaning toward returning when he opted out of his deal late last month. Still, the capped-out Clippers were in a tough spot, since they had only the Non-Bird exception to give Collison a 20% raise on his $1.9MM salary without dipping into the mid-level exception.

Instead it’s the Kings using their mid-level to convince Collison to move north. The amount for which Collison signed is what the Kings had wanted to pay Thomas, tweets Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee, and while the Collison agreement doesn’t necessarily forestall the return of Thomas, it casts further doubt on the future of Thomas in Sacramento.

Who is available to sign for back up point guard that is realistic to sign?

Mo Williams? Hinrich? Farmar? Bayless? Augustin?

It is a shame that Collison won't be back. He played really well for the Clips last season. I can't blame him at all though considering he will be getting paid at least double what the Clips could offer.

I actually really like Crawford playing the point guard even though I know neither he nor the staff wants him to play extended minutes at that position. I felt like he played very well at that position off the bench last season when CP3 was out. It makes him temper some of his chucking tendencies. He is actually an above average passer and obviously has the handle for it. He had good chemistry with Redick when he played the point. The Clips already have too many 2 guards as it is- Redick, Crawford, Wilcox, Bullock, so moving Crawford to the point could be helpful in that regard.

How good is this guys perimeter defense? I'm sure it's an upgrade over Isaiah Thomas.

Collison has very quick feet and can stay in front of most guys. However, he is a quite short and slender and therefore is easily bullied by bigger players.

he would be solid. I would probably prefer the following in order: Hinrich, Williams, Farmar, Devin Harris (looked solid in playoffs for Dallas last season)

Jameer Nelson might be available for cheap, change of scenery surrounded by talent might help him.

there is good & bad to this; hopefully we can get a bigger point to help CP3 in the last few minutes of games. Doc, please stay away from small guys like Farmar etc. we will get manhandled like last year.

This is probably the only way Doc was not going to play the 2 midget lineup like he did which sucked.

Chris Paul and Collison were not Dumars and Thomas but he sure acted like they were.
Notes: Rookie Rudy Gay twisted his left ankle trying to guard McGrady late in the third quarter and limped to the bench. He returned with 5:51 left, then returned to the bench about a minute later - http://www.nba.com/games/20061231/MEMHOU/recap.html

If we are trying to save money at backup pg spots I suggest we move with Delonte and maybe a young undrafted guard.

I've never been a big fan of Nelson's. He is too small and slow for his size

God awful defender. Was pathetic in the playoffs and got burnt every game. Fast with the ball but cant keep a soul in front of him. OKC literaly scored about 10 possesions in a row on Collison trying to guard WB, or because he couldnt stay in front of him leadin to drive and dishes. Very bad defender. Will miss his offense but his defense makes me not miss him much

I thought the problems with Westbrook were more a schematic problem than his fault. Besides, Westbrook makes everybody look bad. CP3 couldn't guard him either.

Agreed. Westy brakes down great defenders and makes them look bad all the time. I think Collison is an underrated defender and definitely an improvement over IT.

I never really liked IT as the PG for the Kings. I always saw him as a backup PG, as Collison should be as well. IT hurt the team down the stretch, even when he had hot games. Turning the ball over in crucial possessions. Coming from a Kings fan, there are too many people (Kings fans) in particular that love IT way too much. Yes he put up great numbers and has impressive stats, but that never translated to wins and never helped other players get better. The rotation was stagnant and the ball was only fed through Gay, Cousins, and IT.

Yes, what other players could the Kings go too? McLemore never saw development with IT on the court and I feel that GV was a better PG for the Kings because he read the floor better than IT. IT even admitted that he was more of a scoring PG than a pass first PG. I feel with the talent that the Kings had on their roster, they could have all been utilized better with a smarter PG.
