that always trips me out though. Thats like Pau Gasol almost literally giving Melo 3 million dollars (assuming Pau can get the full amount elsewhere.) That amazes me.

Do MLE deals have a minimum year length for a contract?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bulls leaked that rumor themselves to keep the real intentions on the down low. 8-)

Did I miss something? Why is Kenny Anderson important? Is he BFFs with Melo or something?

Yes, but he'll be BYC(50% of salary). Bulls have early bird rights on Nazr so they can sign him to 175% of last year's salary or the average salary, whichever is higher. The average salary for last season will be determined within the week but it should be in the neighborhood of 5.7 million. I'm not 100% on his cap hold figure but I'd think it's 2 year minimum(915,243)

Which part?

That Melo would be okay with any amount the Bulls can offer, whether it's with cap space of a S&T.

I think you're missing an important part of that sentence - 'if he chooses the Bulls'. If he's choosing the Bulls, then hes clearly okay with what they've offered him - because if he's not, then he's not going to choose the Bulls.

Why can't he "choose the Bulls at $20+ million starting salary"? If he chooses the Bulls, I don't know if that necessarily means he is willing to play at a starting salary of $16 million. That's why I said none of us could possibly know. If he will take a starting salary of $16 million, then the last 14 threads here and handful of threads on the Knicks board will be moot - it would be logical to say he'd be a Bull. However, if the Bulls are offering that type of deal, and the Knicks are truly offering a max (or near max), then I don't see Melo passing that up. The Bulls certainly have a better chance of winning in the next 2 years, but beyond that we could call it equal. Plus if Rose continues to have knee problems, then Melo is in the same offensive predicament that he has found himself in with the Knicks - joining a team that struggled to score 70 points a game vs the Wizards in the post season. I have no doubts that Chicago presents a better opportunity for the short term, but to convince Melo it's a better option longterm, I personally believe it will take a lot more than a contract starting at $16 million. But that's my opinion, and that's why I said none of us could possibly know for sure what his demands are and what the Bulls told him.

My math (corrected for Noah's $12.7M and 13 roster holds) says dealing Taj for a $5M Pau along with dealing MDJ & Snell and signing a letter delaying Mirotic gets you an $18.6M starting salary for Melo and a 4/$80 deal. as compared to first 4 years of NYK at $22 starting salary of $98. I saw somewhere that tax load for a IL player is about $1.5M/yr less than a NYK player at a max deal so $6M over 4 years, or Melo gives up $12M in first 4 years to join a team with Rose-Noah-Pau-Butler and McDermott on the bench and then adding in Mirotic at MLE next year.

(Yes Knick fans I know NYK can offer a 5th guaranteed year at $29M.)

He's already said he will take less to win. But is looking for the best combination of money and winning.

He does seem to like Melo though, as apparently LA just getting Anthony would make him comeback there. And that's all they'd have beside grandpa Kobe and Randle.

So follows he should be ecstatic to join a Melo Bulls version team.

If Melo is going back to the Knicks he better tell people quickly. I'd be pissed if he waits another week and says I'm going back to New York. I am a big believer that we don't need Melo. I would love to keep all of our assets and add a Lance Stephenson type player. It's funny to me because I think Melo needs us to win more then we need him. I just don't want him dragging it out long enough that our other key players are off the market.

If Rose had to workout for Melo (which I know isn't exactly what it was), but imagine what Kobe would have to do for him lol.

Melo: "Kobe, not so sure you still got it in you."

Why isn't anyone considering this as a way to offset anything he'd give up?

Jordan Brand is a huge cashcow that would grow much larger if he was a Bull in Jordan's city. I mean the shoes are already called "Jordan Melo". Imagine the Bulls fans that will be jumping like crazy on that.

And grandpa Nash.

Meeting with Gasol can not be a plan B because it would not make sense. This has to be a trip with Melo still in mind and hoping they can get Melo and Gasol which would mean Taj is gone somehow. I'm looking at this as a positive for now.

Sam Amick on Dan Patrick

- howard wanted out of la so bad and was begging to get out of la Doesnt really see that with Carmelo

- Thinks Carmelos comments on family and his son made it seem you would have to rip him away from the Knicks but teams know Carmelo has never been a free agent so teams going big Chicago went big houston went big dallas not as big but professional and Kobe coming in today is big That could have been like a few years ago when Cuban didnt come into to talk to deron williams could create red flag if a key guy doesnt show up

- Carmelo gets to know the teams front office on these pitches If you did a poll with players to name all the gms they would be lucky to name 30% So want to introduce him to the owner/front office the players and tell him the plans are and why you can win a ring here

- Kobe/lakers different cause they know each other They can talk about where Kobe is at Maybe that would help Carmelo and he has a off season residence in la so not that out of the way to like Chicago dallas or houston

- Honestly dont know where Carmelo lands Keep hearing that he is PROBABLY headed back to ny but just doesnt see it cause there are no guarantees that knicks could get a big free agent next summer No guarantees of winning He would be rolling the dice a little bit

- Torn between Chicago and houston for Carmelo Chicago not that big a drop off in terms of big city life style he knows houston hates hearing that cause its 4th biggest city Tons of players like living there but just how Carmelo is wired in terms of playing in a big stage getting the world attention Chicago provides that more than houston (even though houston has the chinese market locked up)

- Pau Gasol doesnt know where he ends up okc is interesting but they dont have much money yet to offer Have to know where he is at He is not like Carmelo where he is saying well I never won before so take low offer Thinks he has a number in mind just a matter of finding out that number lakers still in play Bulls also interested

- With lowery getting locked up pieces starting to fall into place Not many of these guys out there that can bring in other players

- Love trade golden state still front runners warriors have to take martin but they dont want to do that or include thompson so in holding pattern
Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker......
- Tom Thibodeau after a loss

Perfect set up. Make everyone think if the Bulls can't land him, he's going to NY. Other teams will start on their contingency plans and the Bulls swoop in and steal him.

Pure genius!
