Eh, I liked how quiet everything was. Haha, but we need a stretch 4, and Frye isn't a RFA, so obviously this meeting makes sense.

Agree. I have never heard LeBron even hint that he wants to play with Melo. The LeBron+Melo construct is entirely media driven.

If Suns offer LeBron the max $22 million, and allow him to pick another sidekick, I think it would be Bosh. We could get Bosh for $16 million per year, so that would be $38 million for both players. Suns could do that without too much impact on the existing roster.

According to SB Nation, the Suns are looking at a number of players on the free agent market apart from Bledsoe, including Chandler Parsons, Isaiah Thomas, Gordon Hayward and Luol Deng as well as players like Danny Granger and Trevor Ariza. The team is hoping to keep Channing Frye and some other names like Ed Davis, Spencer Hawes and Pau Gasol also could be in the mix. Last season the team was close to trading for Pau Gasol before that deal went through and now they could try and sign him on the free agent market.

We are paying him, I think, for 3 more years under the stretch provision.
Let's say it's 1mil per year against the cap.

What if a team signs him this season. Does that get shaved off the cap for us this year, each year, or no years?

We owed him $6 million this past year and only a $3 million guaranteed for next season. So we owed him a total of $9 million when we bought him out for $7 million. This got applied pro-rata to the years, so our hit next year for him is $2,333,333. That equals the share of his cash payout for that year (the cap hit could be the full $3 million but from what I'm looking at, it doesn't appear that way, but it's one of those two amounts, and I believe the lesser one).

Who's going ape sh*t? I'm stating reasons why we might take a look at him. With Plum, Frye (assuming he resigns), and Len, Hawes isn't really needed. It only makes sense really if Bron is in play.

QUESTION:

"Joe (Charlotte, NC)

Do you expect Eric Bledsoe will get the max or will he wind up with a deal similar to Lowry's? It's hard to believe he'd demand (or at least get) more money than a player who had the better season."

ANSWER:

"Kevin Pelton (2:37 PM)

Again, markets don't work so neatly in practice. And Bledsoe is younger, plus a restricted free agent so any team hoping to get him away from Phoenix has to pay a premium. So I would not be stunned by a max offer to him."

I would be surprised if there was max offer coming for Bledsoe. First, I do not believe the market values him as a max player and second, there are very few teams, who need a Bledsoe that have the cap space, without significant rearrangements of their rosters to make such an offer.

When you look back at things and how they unfolded, most teams were targeting 2015 as the free agent bonanza. They were looking at the Miami big 3 opting out of the last year of their contracts, they were looking at Melo opting out of the last year of his, they were looking at Love opting out of his last year, Rondo being done in Boston, Aldridge, Noah, etc… This was set to be the biggest player market in the history of the NBA. If you also look at how teams were constructed most had lots of expiring contracts and could play in the market.

Much of the thinking was that Miami would win a 3rd championship in 2013-14. This all ended when Miami got punked in the finals by SA and Lebron realized his team is not championship caliber. When all three opted out this year, it caught teams unready to participate in the market. You can see this by the fact that the press talks about max offers, but none are forthcoming because the teams really do not have that type of flexibility. There is only one quality team that does have the cap room and flexibility - Phoenix. The press does not want to talk about it in large part because of ignorance on just how intricate the cap is and how it works so they look at a gross number as opposed to a net number. Most teams that appear to have large cap space, really do not have the flexibility to put together a max offer. See Dallas for example. Dallas appears to have $24M in cap space, but the reality the $24 M must cover Dirk in addition to the free agent they want to pursue. The Lakers can do it, but it means the end of Gasol. Chicago cannot do it without moving a rotation player such as Gibson out. Houston cannot do it without giving away Lin and what ever it takes to get rid of him and even then cannot do it for a guy like LeBron or Melo.

I probably shouldn't really mention this, but this morning on SportsCenter, Chris "Multiple Sources" Broussard was mentioning that Wade and Bosh would both prefer to stay in Miami even if LeBron ends up leaving. Obviously, Broussard doesn't know everything (and is wrong a lot), but just throwing that out there. I do agree, though, that Bosh would be very impactful on this team if LeBron joined. We could still sign Frye/Hawes/etc. as a back up big man who can shoot (as long as they took a pay cut).

You can thank McD and Babby for the masterful way they did the Beasley buy out. They took a took the full $4.67M hit this year and then stretched the $2.3M over 3 years. Their cap hit for Beasley for the next 3 years is $767K.

If he was talking to Portland and saying he would be happy to play there, than he is probably willing to play for around $5 million. It was floated he wanted $8, but that wasn't going to happen. If Frye leaves, he's definitely worth $5 as a fairly solid replacement.

Totally agree. But hawes, from what I am reading and what you said, wants closer to 7 or 8 a year. Don't think 5 a year will get him.

Good news. I'd give him $5M/yr or so. He's better than Frye so even if we do overpay, I'd rather overpay for him than Frye.

The only difference is timing and we can go over the Cap to pay Frye we cant to sign Hawes.

You know what made frye so effective was his high and very quick release when shooting. I would love to know / see more of hawes shooting. Is he a wide open type or can he shoot over other players?
