There was only one poll where LeHeadband coming got over 50%. And that was at the height of the he's going to Chicago feeding frenzy. People were pretty realistic really.

Have to say my odds on LeBron returning to Miami are down to about 97% though.

Not sure why everyone has it made up in their mind that Phil Jackson isn't going to be able to do anything within 5 seasons to help a franchise he won a TITLE with, get back on it's feet.

Because he's about to super max a 30 year old wing scorer - thus creating cap problems for him for the life of the deal. And his first move was to hire a coach with zero experience. The TITLE he won with New York was in the 70's as a bench player- doesn't really seem relevant to the discussion. His time as a coach- that's relevant- him winning as a Knicks player doesn't mean anything for his prospects as a GM.

My point is, he was there when they were winning. He has been part of the franchise. He's grown, became a champion and one of the best basketball minds ever. Why anyone would think Phil isn't going to do anything to make a winner and Melo is somehow making a bad decision if he stays, is beyond me. He'd be going back because he obviously believes in Phil's plan.

With that said, he's not going back.

If he goes back, it's for the money.

Genius Phil isn't off to a very good start by the way. That coaching search was laughable.

The Knicks are locked into their current roster if they re-sign Melo or if they just let him walk.
To gain any cap space if they simply let Melo walk they would have to waive their unguaranteed contracts and even then it would give them around 3 mil in space at 58.5 mil in payroll.
They wouldn't be able to get picks or any tradeable assets to make moves. They would then have 18.5 mil in salaries before signing their 2014 draft picks heading into 2015 with just 5 players under contract.

Now if Melo re-signs then they can likely bring in another top FA to pair with him next year if they they move some other pieces. But even that will be a tough task.

I don't know why people are losing all hope. I'm not an optimist at all, and I haven't lost hope. A few random Stein tweets and you all lose your ****. NYK may very well end up signing melo, but its obvious they are worried. They weren't always planning to go to LA and try to secure the commitment. It's clear they are worried about Chicago, and worried Chicago will get their hooks in Carmelo further.

Pack it in you sissies, this isn't over yet.

Nothing about this process has been a shock people. He made the stops. Now its decision time. We'll see what it is but nothing has changed since he opted out.

Phil did most of his winning as a coach where he could really control the players and what was happening. We've only seen Phil squeeze blood from a stone, but we've never really seen him pick good talent it was just done for him. If phil was the coach I would think the Knicks make it to the PO next year with Melo probably, but instead he's an inexperienced GM and nothing that he did as a player or coach helps his resume because they don't go hand in hand.

There's no reason to be worried. Melo hasn't even met with NY yet. They might not be offering him the max, we don't know. They haven't even discussed their plan to quickly improve their team with him. All we know is we gave a strong pitch and have a shot. Should find out more tonight after he meets with NY.
