He wants to establish relationships with those guys in hopes they actually come to NY to play with the Knicks. He knew with his current salary wants, Chicago would have to deal Taj. He wanted him in the meeting so he could show he cared and thought Taj and Joakim were winners, so when their FA is up, NY has a legit shot at them. It's called planting the seed. He also wanted to see what other teams are doing and will report back to Phil on that.
If he was, he would've picked different teams. Phil's not worried about Dallas or Houston nor are they trying to recruit Dwight or Harden who have 4 years left on their deals.
