Are you saying you might like to replace Ariza with Draymond Green? You'd like him to start playing the 3?
I'm saying I don't want to pay Ariza more than 7 mill for 2 or 3 years, and I feel that for what Barnes and Green are and what they do, it's a better value. I'm not saying they are better than Ariza, they could be because they have room to grow, but I'm saying I would rather have them, than have Ariza here for 4 or 5 years on a 8-10 mill a year contract. I'm not saying Ariza is a bad player, I am not saying I don't like him. I just don't want to over pay him, I've said this before, there are players that you can not afford to not over pay and there are players that you can not afford to over pay. In my opinion, Ariza is in that second group.
Gambit -- if my criticism made you feel defensive, I apologize. My bad.
I don't believe in over-paying anyone. And, IMO, if you acquire a super-star (e.g. someone like LeBron -- duh! -- or even Love), it's almost impossible to overpay that player. Their productivity delta over other guys is so large that they buy you wins at what turns out to be a bargain rate.
With a few exceptions every once in a while, the only really bargain NBA salaries are either rookie salaries or max salaries for a genuine top-tier player (i.e. not someone paid like a superstar who may be very good but isn't that extra special producer -- Kyrie Irving comes to mind).
In that sense, no doubt, both Green and Barnes are very good value for $$ on their current deals, so I'd be happy to have either one. It's just that neither of them is a player I think anyone can build around. Barnes might command too much $$ in his 2d contract, just because he was a high pick -- that does happen sometimes. But Green is likely to be a good player for what he gets paid over many years.
I don't think either or both would replace Ariza, but I agree that there's a risk in signing Trevor for the @ $10m/year he's pretty likely to get. With Barnes in his place, for example, I'm quite sure we'd win fewer games, but we might be better positioned for the future; i.e. we'd have more flexibility.
So, I made it more black and white than I should have.
