HINrichPolice wrote:Guys. This is what coldfish has been talking about. Now that Melo has a max offer from LA, he has something to leverage against NY. There was likely a no chance he signed with the Bulls for our cap space. And NY didn't have a reason to feel pressured to do a S&T. That has changed.

REJOICE!

A) now there's a credible threat for s&t as you say.

Also, and importantly- B) Bulls can offer a lot more than LA in any trade, even with sending Boozer elsewhere ing w picks. NY can have Mirotic plus picks. Sac/CLE pick swap goes to 3d team w Booz (phl needs to hit salary floor).

Darius Miles Davis wrote:I'm somewhat irritated today. We did a better job with this recruiting pitch this year, but I think we miscalculated again. Taj Gibson should not have been at the meeting. He should have been positioned as a potential candidate for a trade. A Rose/Butler/Melo/Noah is a strong place to start.

In not providing an option for max cap space, to some extent (arguable, I know), we once again made the organization mistake of not being willing to trade a lesser player for a star (such as Deng for Gasol, Deng for Kobe). We've done this before, and it's just not cool.

And, while I'm complaining, why are we continuing to look at other SF like Ariza? Right now, we have three talented SF types on the roster: Butler, Dunleavy, McDermott. If not Melo, why not try to pry a talented shooting guard away from another team with cap space (Boozer amnesty) and other assets?

People need to step back and think about this. The Bulls would have to be COMPLETE idiots to not have thought of this. They had Rose give a workout in front of Melo, you don't think they thought of the money angle?

The most likely scenario is that it was discussed with the agents. If Melo wants max money, here are the routes we go to get it.

This Taj thing is taking on a life of its own and its based on assumptions and a few poorly sourced tweets.

.......

People just don't want to accept this. The Bulls basically made a "best case" roster pitch to Melo with the promise that money would be taken care of and he is still saying no. He just wasn't that into us.

People just want someone or something to blame because the idea that just playing for the Bulls isn't all that attractive is something people don't want to consider.

The bolded part is the new paradigm to work with going forward. I am sorry but after 10 years of searching for the holy grail of a star player to add to the roster Pax need to move on. As another poster note this constant, never ending quest for "flexibility" needs to end. It has not gotten us where we want to be. Its time for a new approach. Personally I think that means the end of the Paxson era, but either way a new strategic approach is needed.

Not necessarily. If Pau's only getting the MLE he'd probably be willing to come off the bench too.

Nothing has actually happened, but posters here are convinced the FO is damaged goods. It's okay though, because most of them don't realize how the NBA works.

He broke LAX AND Gasol news but he is lying about Melo?

He said the Noah was in LA. He didn't know what Noah was there for. None of us did. But we all sort of assumed that he was there with the rest of the Bulls brass to recruit Gasol. It wasn't that hard to figure out. I would bet a good bit that the Melo part was a fabrication. I have lost bets...but I'd feel pretty good about this one.

He clearly states in his timeline that Noah was there for Gasol.

Okay, that's cool. But still, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what Noah would be doing in LA. Furthermore, this person claims not to know anything about the NBA yet knew who Joakim Noah was. Sorry, but I'm just a real skeptical cat on this one. I just don't see Noah spilling information like that knowing that with social media, it would spread like wild fire.

@chicagobullsbot: Chicago Bulls have made clear they'd like to re-sign Kirk Hinrich at a salary far reduced from his $4m last season. (Source: K.C. Johnson)

I have been critical of the FO in the past, but I really failnto see what more they can do. Seems like they repped the city and org well. They can't just make a max slot without gutting the team.
They also can't make the Knicks not offer the max or make Carmelo's family not want to stay put.

So basically the same stuff that we always knew? Melo got offered the max from new york. Bulls went to LA to talk to Gasol and Melo is deciding between us, rockets and knicks?

60 m $ difference is so much. I know, Melo wants championship but that much? I don't think so. Melo will remain as a Knick. Sorry being that pessimist.

Marc Berman of the New York Post:

"According to an NBA source, the Bulls, during Tuesday’s meetings, floated the idea of Anthony making about $16 million per year across four seasons."

Maybe they did talk about money?

Sounds like this GM thinks what a lot of us think i.e. James is dicking around with the league again, perhaps to cover up the obvious collusion that was going on prior to the MIA 3 opting out.

Darius Miles Davis wrote:
It's a simple message, but the money we had to offer was just too low. A four year max deal and a team of Rose/Butler/Mirotic (maybe)/Noah was an excellent balance of money going his way, along with the potential to win. I think that was the sweet spot.

If the Bulls had a trade lined up to dump Taj for capspace, do you think they would advertise it publicly? Hells no.

Do you think they would make it clear that it was in the deck to Melo's agents? Hell yeah

....

I really think you are overestimating the team left in the capspace scenario. Its really bad in that you don't have a starting PF . . . like, at all. If you openly present that situation to Melo and tell him to take $30M less to join that team, is it really going to be a positive?

Think about it as a non Bulls fan:
Rose -> Injury risk
Butler -> Meh
....
.....
Noah

With some picks and rookies to fill in at some point in the future.

Explaining the whole "dump Taj for capspace" thing in detail was not a winning hand and not a balance.

The winning hand was always the sign and trade based teams. Melo gets his money to go onto a team that can immediately contend. That's effectively what Chicago presented (to the best of my knowledge).
