It's just the feeling I get with this sudden news that Mirotic has now been officially bought out, it almost seems to be that it's a signal that the Bulls front office is going into phase 2 of their off season plans and have closed the door on their hopes of signing Melo.

I hope I'm wrong though.

They could trade his rights to NY. There is now no doubt that NY could sign him. The whole "he will only play for Chicago" narrative is gone. Whomever has his rights will have him on their team.

Once the Bulls actually sign him, which is supposedly going on now, he cannot be traded for 30 days, FYI.

$22.76M, 105% of last year's $21.68M

FA $22.76M, $23.5M2, $24.27M, $25.05M -> $95.6M
NY $22.76M, $24.47M, $25.73M, $26.98M, $28.24M -> $128.2M

It's time to move on to Lance Stephenson in my opinion. McDermott, Mirotic, and Lance would be a great offseason. I don't care how crazy the guy is he can create, handle the ball, and distribute. Maybe he would fit in with the NY guys we have in Taj and Noah and they would take him under their wing.

How likely is it that Melo would be willing to play for the Lakers for less in order to to leverage Phil Jackson into a S&T? Winning the title will still be out of reach in LA as well next year.

I think he wouldn't gamble if he thought he might get his bluff called, considering the 130 million. Depends on how he reads PHil Jackson.

And defensively, Crazy Lance could rival the Tony Allen's of the world.

Have we heard how long the meeting with NYK went? Everyone else's meetings were publicized.

Frankly, the Bulls' meeting had the most pictures and videos available of the meetings for whatever that's worth.

Vuc N Pek called this one, was all over it, called it a week ago. When he called it a week ago, not sure that you can claim the bulls are shifting into plan B. It was always going to be July 4. This was all part of the plan.

What this plan ends up being I don't have a clue. The mad scientists are at work.

What happened to their defenders? Is there some creator (besides Rose) that I'm not aware of that drew them off or are we playing 5 on 3?

Not really.

Sobbing silently after missing on Melo is one of the stages of grieving, though.

Only if they're signing him specificially to be used in a sign-and-trade, which isn't happening.

Red,

Who else on our roster can we do this with?

DJ, Kirk, Butler, Nazr ( large 1 year contract with Over 36 rule?) are specific examples I am looking at.

Kirk has been like by LA a lot and maybe we can use him in S & T for Pau.

Where does $21.68M come from? Sham has $21,388,954 and Spotrac has $21,388,953. Not a big deal, just curious.

Also, not sure how you got your yearly numbers. For the lower starting salary ($21,388,953 * 1.05), I have:

Code: Select all

      Year 1   22,458,401    22,458,401
      Year 2   24,142,781    23,469,029
      Year 3   25,827,161    24,479,657
      Year 4   27,511,541    25,490,285
      Year 5   29,195,921    N/A

3 year total   72,428,343    70,407,087
4 year total   99,939,884    95,897,372

Brewer, Amundson and James are all signed to unguaranteed deals. Each of their deals are fully unguaranteed except Amundson who has to be waived by the 1st of August, then he'll become 300K guaranteed.

Their deals total $4.069 million to be used in trades. Combine that with Dunleavy and you got about $7.3 million in outgoing salary. Half of that can be used as savings.

I don't get why everyone got so pessimistic yesterday.

Is it because KC Johnson relied on some random twitter source about Joakim telling people he doesn't think Melo will come to CHI? Or was there a legit source on that?

The fact that LA offered a max contract plays exactly into what the Bulls need. With a S&T, aren't we able to offer closer to 20M instead of 17-18M? If so, that's a lot more palatable for Melo. And with the Lakers offer, Melo can now tell Phil, "either you S&T me to the Bulls or I'll just go to LA." I think this is plausible b/c playing for LA has a lot of benefits for him and his wife if not winning. I think he ultimately would rather play for us though, and now he has leverage to make that happen.

Why aren't we happier about this?

EDIT: Also to add, people forget that the difference isn't as big when you consider that Melo will 99% get another contract after a 4 year contract. So the first year of the next next contract fills in the money gap a little. It's not like this will be his last ever NBA contract and thus he has no chance to make up the money. It's probably more like a $15M difference than a $30M difference I'd guess.
