Summer League Thread

Post#1 » by azuresou1 » Sat Jul 5, 2014 7:41 am

Discussing all things related to Summer League.

Here are SL rosters: http://hoopshype.com/summer_leagues.htm

Some notes about our roster:
- Jenkins is apparently healthy... make or break year for him
- Payne and Patterson are playing. Tavares is not.
- Schroeder and Muscala will be returning for SL. Scott and Mack will not (since they're FAs right now)

I think it's been posted here, but Tavares had a contract quirk similar to Nogueira. Bebe wasn't added to SL until right before it started and many are thinking / hoping the same with Tavares.

Payne is older than all the other prospects including Jenkins. I knew Payne was old for his class but d@mn...

Handful of interesting prospects for me. Everyone knows about the draft picks (although Patterson intrigues me more than he should for his draft position) but kids like Stephen Holt (a former top recruit who is listed as a 6'4" PG who can shoot), Casey Prather (someone had a man crush on him), and DJ Shelton (you can't teach 6'10" 250).

Noticed Millsap's baby bro is on the team. Don't expect anything out of him (he had a bad college career) but it's nice to see a nod to Trillsap after the workhorse year he gave us.

If it helps us re-sign Millsap next year, then great.

Glad to see Tavares is playing.

Also, I wonder if Jenkins and Patterson will actually be competing for one spot on the team this year. If so, this is the beginning of that competition.

Do you guys think any of the undrafted players on the Hawks roster has a shot of making the actual team?

On the one hand, I think Ferry/Coach Bud like to leave a roster spot open for someone to take it in TC. Mack & Scott were borderline guys going into TC and Cartier earned a slot last year; one of the reasons for the Lou/Bebe trade was to clear a couple of roster spots on top of the financial flexibility. OTOH, we don't have many roster spots now, so forth figuring out how to give them to guys that we don't have any investment in. We would probably have to deal off someone to create the roster spot (e.g., we'd need to deal Jenkins to get Patterson on there).

I think we'll keep the open roster spot that Cartier won last year, but I don't think we'll be making room for more unless someone demands it with his play.

First game is Saturday (EDIT: @ 4:30 Eastern)

Sorry, don't have any streaming info. I'm sure someone will post as we get closer though...

You can pay $15 to have access to all summer league games on nba.com. I dont have nbatv either and chose this route.

Do we really have high expectations for Walter 'Edy' Tavares?

I see him as unlikely to even play in the league. And should he beat the odds and make it here, I see him as situational backup.

If I'm the opposing coach and I see Tavares on the floor, I have one instruction to my guards:

RUN.

Run his gigantic, slow behind into the ground. He can't run the break offensively or defensively. He is only of use in the half court. And can't guard jump shooting big men.

Yeah i want to watch Payne, I think Tavares is like that Big Salim or whatever the Kings have.

Tavares reminds me of Gheorge Muresan...if you're old enough to remember terrible 90s movies

My Giant, anyone?

Personally, no, I don't expect anything out of Tavares. He's just a lotto ticket prospect for me - you probably get nothing, possibly win your $$ back, and have an infinitesimally small chance of hitting a jackpot. If we get a backup-grade defensive C (think Mahinmi) then I will be very, very enthusiastic about how the pick turned out.

Don't recall all the details of his scouting report, but I do remember that my biggest concern was he has high arches. The theory / axiom (whatever) is that this will eventually lead to foot problem as he continues to play the sport and I can understand why one would think that. So, assuming that we do hit the jackpot and he becomes a taller / longer Hibbert on D and isn't worthless on O, then it could just be fools' gold as he ends up injured throughout his 2nd (and big $$) contract. Hence, I'm not even sure I want to see him excel because it could mean that I get all excited just to see him become a crippling contract on the cap in 4-5 years.

I have no expectations on Tavares. He seems stiff and awkward, and doesn't have anything to really work with other than being big and able to run down the court without tripping over himself.

That said, mid 2nd round pick, so whatever. Take your gambles there.

Schroeder looks like he has put on some solid muscle mass.

Jenkins is looking straight terrible.

I do like our guards defensive effort so far. They have had at least 5 deflections and steals already.

Jenkins is a goner if he keeps this up. I love me some Danny Ferry but this is clearly the biggest mistake of his tenure with the Hawks.

I agree. Patterson has looked solid though. I think we see Patterson take Jenkins spot on the roster this season.
