Can we just waive Smith and spend his 13.5m usefully in this FA?

Nope. That's not how the CBA works.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Even if we could waive Smith, do you think our cheap ass owner would do it?
Did you forget he gave up a lottery pick to save money?

So sick of reading this.
Gores approved a trade to get cap space early so Joe could rebuild
Joe then signed poor fits and a moronic coach.
Those poor fits got compensated handsomely for their signatures
If Gores was cheap we wouldn't have signed Smith and traded for Jennings...
The cheap option would have been to sign/trade for no one, keep our pick under 8 and then spend this off season

Re: Waive Smith
Pharaoh- Gores said that amnestying Gordon was "against his philosophy", as he didn't believe someone should be paid to not work.
Whether you want to call that philosophy "cheap" or simply naive is up to you. I believe he is willing to spend as well, but that move was really short sighted on his part. He clearly didn't comprehend how valuable draft picks are to building a good team.

No actually you are wrong.
If Gores buys out Charlie V and keeps Gordon on the roster, we keep the pick which would have probably been top 5 since we were literally 3-5 losses away from the 5th pick anyways. The cap space we would have opened up from Gordon expiring would have been spent ANYWAYS on a free agent THIS summer meaning that the money Gores spent on Smith would have been spent ONE SUMMER LATER on a free agent we actually could have used.
That buy out would have been for nearly the full amount assuming no one would sign Charlie V for more than minimum. Let's pretend that Charlie V signed a 1M deal somewhere else, Gores would still end up paying 7.5M at the beginning of last season. That is an EXTRA almost 8M that Gores would have had to spend.
So dont sit here and say that Gores made the BG trade to spend more money in free agency. Gores was gonna spend his cap space anyways and just did it a year EARLIER. What Gores really did was SAVE 8M at the cost of losing a pick.
I dont know how much Dumars was getting but Gores should have fired him (at a cost of 2-3M) and amnestied Charlie V (at a cost of 8M) and that 10M spent would have allowed our team a PROPER rebuild not a complete LOSS of a year. The funny thing is the top 5 pick would have been a rotation player for us either a PG/SG/SF. That means Gores would have actually SAVED money because he wouldnt have to pay a free agent like Thomas 8M (could have got Smart or Exum) or Meeks 7M. Jokes on him and all us Pistons' fans.
This is not some kind of mystery. Gores surrounds himself with idiots in his inner circle and especially in that SCUM BAG piece of **** Dumars. Dumars made a last ditch effort to save his ass and Gores was TOO DUMB to realize what was happening.
Dont defend Gores for costing us a top 5 pick and blame it on Dumars. Gores has his own balls and billions and calls the shots just like he did with Cheeks midseason. He knew he was giving up the pick and chose NOT to spend money to make Charlie V disappear.
I am sick of the Gores and Dumars apologists on this forum. You spent years defending Dumars for no reason and even chastise me when I dont show "the proper respect he deserves" LMFAO what a joke
Bottom line: 8M extra spent or top 5 pick. Ill take the pick any day of the week. Gores didnt and that is why we are sitting in the position we are in right now at the bottom of the GARBAGE East

No, man, there wouldn't be much point to a salary cap or the whole nonsense that goes into FA season if you could just undo all your contracts whenever you wanted.
Waiving just means you cut a guy loose, still have to pay him and still counts on the cap. That's how a NBA contract works, and that's how the CBA works--once you sign you can't get out of it. We had an amnesty waiver that would've allowed us to do a move like that, but it only covered players who were already signed at the time the last CBA was signed. Could've done that with Gordon or CV but the Smith signing came after that.
The only way we get out of Smith's deal is by dumping it or watching as it slowly, painfully expires (like we did with CV).

Agree it was short sighted but let's be honest: Joe didn't really value draft picks his whole tenure.
I can't remember him ever trading up or getting an additional first (except the extra one we used to get Sheed)
I think blaming Gores lessens the blame that should go to Joe

You're preaching to the choir as far as firing Joe earlier...I even went to bat for Hickie & McDonough last off-season before they got hired.
Calling Joe a scum bag piece of **** isn't my bag though. Calling Gores dumb isn't something I'm gonna do either.
I just don't agree with the idea Gores should shoulder more of the blame than Joe. Joe was the man in charge and Gores signed off on his moves. There's enough blame to go round but at the end of the day Joe made the call and he's to blame IMO

Re: Waive Smith
Waiving Smith with 3 years left at that salary would be moronic. He's not completely useless, just a bad fit.. there will be a taker.

Nobody would buy out Smith from his contract right now. Not even the Russian owner of the Nets. He lost like 140 million dollars last season too. This will be the last post I'll put on this thread. I don't like going back to useless conversations/arguments like this. Hindsight is 20/20

Traded Darko to Orlando for the draft pick used on Rodney Stuckey.
There is no one else to blame for not using the amnesty, other than Gores. If all it required to use the amnesty clause was making a basketball decision, then Dumars would be to blame. But the amnesty was predominantly a financial situation, which required a decision to be rendered from the owner.

Re: Waive Smith
Gores goes out and signs the most prominent coach available to a 5 year $35 million contract (while still paying who knows how many other coaches) and there are still people trying to push the image that he's a tightwad? Silly, silly, silly.
