I'd prefer Taj but the lineup of Gasol-Mirotic-Noah is better than Taj-Mirotic-Noah because Gasol can play both PF/C and can play with either Noah or Mirotic. The lineup of Taj-Mirotic is undersized.

Question:

Whats the total figure if we sign Melo at 22 mil with annual increases AND extend him for a 5th year later on?

I am interested as to how this compares to NY's 5 year max offer. How big is the gap?

That is a lot to ask of a former point guard who has never coached before.

With all that championship pedigree i think they will figure it out

Kurt Rambis' championship pedigree consists of getting his rec-specs pounded by Kevin McHale.

Comparing rambis to Phil ? Ummmm

There's really nothing more they could have done. They can't force Melo to sign with the Bulls.

If you get Melo by trading Taj AND GET PAU......you do it ASAP.

we all knew Bulls had something lined up to get him.

Deng's using the Heat as leverage to get a deal from Chicago.

Ralph's news that we gave him options has shifted my weekend such that each second he hasn't announced his return to NY for the mega max is definitely a second closer to him signing with us. Time covers what's happening behind the scenes, and there's nothing more to happen from New York's perspective. They already threw at him all that they have to sell...and he hasn't committed yet. In short, 1) Melo isn't blown away by the Knicks and 2) time is on our side.

Agreed.

The more time that ticks away, the better for the Bulls. If he had his mind made up on NY, it would have been announced or leaked in a substantive way by now .. IMO.

He may still go with NY, but it seems like the Bulls are making this really hard for him. And kudos to them for having a great second option lined up if they have to trade Taj. Because if Melo comes here, and Taj is outgoing, there's no doubt in my mind Gasol will then want to come to Chicago. And what a lineup that would be.

He probably lives in Chicago. Just like Melo could live in NY if he played for the Bulls.

I hear you. But i'd give the FO credit for controlling the things they can. It's all up to Melo now.

Luol has been in Chicago all off-season. It's his home.

Zartan wrote:I find it strange that so many are questioning PJax's ability to GM. Sure, he's never done it before. But that isn't necessarily a precursor to failure.

What exactly is it he might struggle with?

The financials? No doubt he has qualified individuals to help navigate the intricacies of the CBA. The Knicks are about to come out of salary cap hell and I'm sure they're not in a rush to go back. I'd expect more prudence than we're used to seeing in NY.

Personnel decisions? I trust Phil's eye for talent. The man has over 50 years in professional basketball and a resume unlike any GM in history. Not to mention he's worked with/under two of the best GM's maybe ever in Krause and West.

I see more positives than negatives. He's the ultimate winner. Players will want to play for him. Players will want to play in New York. He has a blank check owner and will have the means to use it shortly. The only thing he's missing is draft picks and those can often be reobtained.

Unless he completely "Isiah Thomases" the situation success would have to be the more likely outcome.

That is a skill which is very tough to gauge and have. He might have it for all I know. But, looking back in history...very few people have the talent scouting skill, coaching/mentoring skills, cap details skills all in one person or even does it exist in the same organization. Cap details skills are the easiest to find compared to coaching/mentoring skills.

Scouting/picking talent is the hardest one. People make mistakes in Free Agency after they have seen them for many years. I agree players might like him/want to play for him etc.. but assuming he can find talent is a leap of faith.

If he has both coaching/mentoring(which we know he already has) and talent scouting skills in the same body, he is greater than the Phil Jackson we know.
